Wow. That is insane. Now instead of thinking about there being life in the universe besides us, how long could it live?

They're going to crack it open and people will start turning into zombies.
Just you wait and see.

My first thought reading this (after the surprise of it all) was to remember reading the Andromeda Strain.

I appoint myself as the reason you don't make Portal jokes.

In any case, amazing find! Though I'll have to remind myself not to break open any salt crystals the next time I'm in Death Valley. Don't want to accidentally unleash something ancient that has been dreaming in slumber for so long...bad things always happen...

This was a triumph........for science.

Anyways, pretty cool. Hard to think they can survive inside it.

It's been a long, long time...

:P

@the zombie ant thing: It's only a matter of time before we get an Umbrella type corporation that studies this a bit too much.

OH CRAP, http://brutalgamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/deadspace-2.jpg are possessed by a type of bacteria/fungi...

What malfunction is occurring in a human mind to reanimate a 40 million year old bacteria? :ermm:

And on the other end of the scale...

Note:

"In other research, scientists have determined that fungi are more closely related to human beings and animals than to other plants"

As I've suspected all along!

Moreover, while humans and most species are divided into only two sixes, mushrooms contain over 36,000 sixes.

Reminds me of the being trapped inside that crystal in Dragon Age for who knows how long. I imagine those bacteria are past insane at this point. :P

I always thought of that as some http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antlion type creature.

Fungi aren't plants at all.

Right. Fungi are closer to the animal kingdom than to plants. I suppose that was the point of the statement... Minus the bad wording by the scientists or the journalist.
