1080i

i KNOW that crysis 2 will support 1080P, its inevitably, but will it support 1080i? cos i have it, and the graphics are, IMHO the same as a 1080P i saw, but will crysis support this?

That's the highest my TV can output, so I hope so.

if it is for a console it should scale down to whatever you have it connected to even if its just 720p i would believe. The only difference between the 1080p and 1080i is one is progressive and the other is interlaced, which mean that for progressive each time the monitor or tv refreshes (like 60hz or whatever the refresh rate is) it displays each and every vertical line of resolution but with interlaced it displays alternating frames consisting of odd/even lines of resolution. So basically at one cycle it would display say the even # lines and the next refresh cycle it would not display those and only display the odd # lines...but it happens so quickly our eye doesn't realize there is info missing on each frame and by it flashing so quickly it appear as one seamless 1080 lines of resolution. It is said that interlaced looks more like its flashing if you look at it closely but ive never noticed it.

It won't matter because it'll still look like a 720p/i game. Consoles don't run many games at 1080p (with most being arcade games). However, if a game upscales the menus to 1080p, they'll do it to 1080i too. Gotta have that 1080p text.

I think ( with my limited knowledge of console outputs ) that a PS3 can output to 1080i (1920x1080) and an XBOX to 720P (1280x720) "i" is for interlaced and "p" is for progressive, 1080P is better quality than 720P but 720P can be better quality than 1080i (30hz-60hz) there are legal restrictions on devices outputting a full 1080 progressive signals, this is why for example an HD.PVR device can only record at 1080i, i think most console games run at 720p which is perfectly ok, the best quality obviously would be 1080P (full screen progressive scans running at 60fps) but i think 1080i (max-output-PS3) would have the edge over an xbox, running a 720P game over a massive 72" HDMI TV isn't going to make the resolution any better... just bigger! :)

except 7oxic, the game won't be 1080p/i in any case. Just 720p/i with 1080p/i menus :)

Uh 1080i is not the max output for a PS3, there is a setup where you can choose and test which connection is max and mine is currently set to 1080p. Now whether or not the game actually supports that connection is another thing, but some games do even if it just upscaled.

check this out http://photos.imageevent.com/gamescans/sonyplaystation3/Metal%20Gear%20Solid%204%20Guns%20of%20the%20Patriots%20cover%2001.jpg , it is a pic of the front and back cover of Metal Gear Solid 4, just like one I have in my hand as im typing it, and on the back it says 480p (which is standard def) 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. Obviously the PS3 supports 1080i and 1080p with the only difference being the things I pointed out a few replies back.

I don't know anything about this stuff besides other things but I thought, with the Cryengine 3 on consoles, that it would be able to run smoothly in 1080i or upscaled to 1080p or something like that :D
