110 hours in, and I think I am done...

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 2:34 pm

I'll just give you my background before I delve into a few complaints/annoyance I have in, an otherwise, fantastic game:

(feel free to skip this part; these are just credentials)
I have a level 52 light-armored warrior specializing in 1h maces +shield and/or dual wield (depends the occasion), restoration, smithing, and enchanting (no points spent in enchanting however, didn't want to be too OP). I've beat the main-quest line / companion / bard / Dark Brotherhood (my favorite) / stormcloak / thieves / and college of Winterhold, as well as a lot of side quests. I've worked my way from Adept to Expert, and I now play exclusively on Master. I am struggling to find anymore quest, aside from meaningless bounty / scavenger quests. I have about 150k gold, and I primarily call Markarth home (coolest home IMO). I have 48/50 achievements on steam -- I refuse to get married (I'm not a role-player), and I am also not going around to each hold and getting a 1,000+ bounty just to get the achievement (Why is this an achievement?).

*It is important to note that these are all complaints are from me personally, and were an annoyance for my play style.
Now for my complaints:

Horses-- Absolute garbage. They are hardly faster than sprinting, hard to steer at times, and have terrible AI. Seriously, why is my horse leading the battle charge into Ancient Dragon battles? I finally had to sink Malog Bal's mace to Shadowmere's neck when he kept attacking things, preventing me from fast traveling. Also, why can't we attack from horses? I feel like this would be a VERY cool feature.
*One thing to note for newbs: Horses are effective mountain climbers, and I mean ridiculously effective. For whatever reason, horses can scale any cliff with relative ease.

Vendors-- Specifically in the early game. If you aren't in with the Thieves guild, selling dragon bones / scales / pricey armors becomes a pain extremely quickly. I had to map myself out a fast-travel route where I could sell all my equipment, as Vendors only typically have ~750 gold. Why does vendor gold scale with level like everything else? This should be implemented. Having to leave lucrative items on a corpse because you are filled with crap vendors cannot afford is infuriating.

Misc Quest- I've done 100+ of these. I would venture to say well over 70% are uninspired and unoriginal. These quest are primarily scavenger or bounty quests, rarely resulting in any significant compensation -- you'll find the occasional word wall which is nice. But honestly, for a company that prides themselves in engrossing and immerse questing, this was a major disappointment. I think -most- of the main faction quest lines were well done (with the exception of thieves guild, and the companion quest like which was entirely too short).

Bugs-- I actually had a good experience to some of the horror stories I've been reading on here. However, there is nothing like hitting f5 to save and having my game instantly crash. When doing an abundance of alchemy/enchanting/smithing at once, my game was prone to freeze once I exited the tool tip. Which leads me to my next point . . .

Enchanting station-- IT'S F***ING AWFUL! Really? Is this the best Bethesda can do? The entire interface design for the enchanting station is an absolute mess (at least for myself on PC).

Money needs more uses -- I have 150k in the bank and literally have nothing to spend it on. I think expensive armor dyes would be a very cool idea for upcoming DLC.

Loot system is bad -- It just isn't good. You don't find enough random good items. Almost all the best items (which tend to be artifacts or craftables) are scripted items given through specific sequence. I think the thing that made the Diablo series so fantastic was the ability for an amazing piece of loot to be on any enemy. It was appealing, and kept gamers checking every corpse. Now that I have so much gold, I don't even bother checking corpses that aren't apart of a major quest line, or the boss/final encounter in a dungeon.

Enchanting is broken -- I know many of you on here will defend Bethesda to the bitter end in regards to this, but the truth is, you shouldn't be able to become invincible by playing the game. It doesn't matter if you exploit the game or not, it isn't cheating, it's merely playing smart. Bethesda has even came out and said they are reworking some balance issues. Hopefully this is on the laundry list.

Some of the skill trees are useless when compared to the alternative -- see lock picking, pick pocketing, speech, and alchemy. I know some, if not most, won't agree.

Too many shouts
More isn't always better. I would of much preferred for Bethesda to scrap some of these shouts, and get down to maybe 12-15 shouts with a 4th word to be learned. I probably frequently use 5-8 shouts out of the 20.

Now, after all that complaining, you are probably expecting that I think the game svcks, well I don't. I think it would benefit greatly from heavy patching, but regardless I give the game a 9.5 / 10. I will probably take a break from the game, at least, until some heavier patches come out. There really isn't much left to do besides level, and it's starting to get very difficult.

If you took the time to read this, thank you. I wrote this extremely quickly and it shows. If you have thoughts, I'd love to hear them!

TL;DR -- I took an arrow in the knee . . .

Why does everyone feel the need to make a thread to tell us they are going to stop playing a game?

To clarify, not that I don't think you should share your thoughts about the game. But why do you have to announce that you are done? There's already a thread like this on the first page.

When complete mods start being released is when the game really starts to shine.

I just figured people may be interested in knowing. I think you may be reading too far into it, but yeah, I now see that someone else made a similar post. This thread, more or less, is a very brief explanation of my experiences with TES: Skyrim and should be viewed as such.

I agree with a lot of the points, especially the loot system. There just isn't any meaningful loot progression. In a lot of RPGs your equipment improves slowly over a long period of time but in Skyrim you go from poor -> average -> great -> immortal in single steps. What makes this even worse is that you peak out in gear quite early on in the game. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said 99% of random loot in Skyrim is vendor trash you sell to get gold to buy nothing with or potions you horde.

This thread will probably get locked soon because it's constructive negative feedback though.

Shame that this kind of thread has already been posted because you made pretty good suggestions, money is easy to get and has little use

and this is more 'umm..wat?' than previous '70 hours and I think I'm done' thread

110 hours means you played for 5 days straight if you play it 24 hours, or 3 weeks if you play it 5 hours a day

and you said "I'm done people!, I don't like the system that the game offered"

Horses-You're right but...meh. Sometimes taking the long way is fun.
Vendors-Maybe they should scale, but they do vary between 700-1500ish.
Misc Quests- Havent done waay too many of them but a lot of time Im finding interesting lore (First time TES player so I like to read a lot of the books)
Bugs-Open world games have a lot of bug, my PS3 crashes at least once a day. Not as bad as Fallout NV for me tho, it was unplayable til I got home from college.
Money-Yeah it feels like Im saving it for something but there just isnt anything.
Loot system-Wouldnt it just make the money thing worse??
Enchanting-I stay away from it mostly, but I can understand your complaints.
Skill trees-...yeah I agree
Shouts-I use two atm, but i plan on experimenting later

Overall what you mentioned seems to be minor things, maybe just put it down for a week or so and then start a new character? Maybe just make your own story about random things, really roleplay it. Personally I always love going back to games after a while, I can play FFVII like twice a year I love it so much. Maybejust give it another go with a new playstyle, trying DID mode.

Stormus.

Well done that man. You beat that game good.

I wonder now if you might get some enjoyment from considering Skyrim to be a simulation of a fantasy world that you could create a character to live in, and that might give you a bit more enjoyment. Now that you have 'beat' everything I mean.

Very excellent write up, I agree with a good bit of your points. I have 90 hours in my main character and 15 into my second character, while the game still provides hours of fun for me, it’s lost it’s initial “WOW” factor. I find myself exploring rather than doing quests on my second character due to the fact that the quests really don’t give you any want to come back and do them again.

I didn’t find myself not needing to worry about money anymore around level 35. Meaning I had about 25,000 gold on me at all times. I loved the idea about armor dye. I would really enjoy that.

No matter how much you love this game it’s going to get old.

I'm fine with people putting up these threads. Everybody's different, and it's not like you just said, "I quit," but you gave a nice, thorough review without being too ranty.

If people don't see the point in these threads, what's the point of posting in them to say you see no point in them? Obviously, others enjoy the read and post agreement or disagreement, either of which is more relevant and validating and appropriate for a DISCUSSION forum. That's the beauty of thread titles... you can skip the ones that don't appeal to you.

Did you even read the post before coming up with this 'witty' reply?

I'll just quote part of the post that you and others who have no reading comprehension are so eager to mock.

OP I agree with your points and view on the game, one hell of a game but the ones you mention definitely detract from longevity of the game.

The last line of the first paragraph "I AM NOT A ROLE PLAYER" says it right there why you say I am done. But you still like it so you can imagine why role players like this game a lot like myself. It's not perfect but hell which games are really. All the games I've played have forum like this complaining about the game for some reason or another but we are all different which why there is no way for everyone to like a game we all have are preferences.

Yea but that's not the fault of Skyrim. That's ANY game.

The fact that you could get even 90 hours out of it is a pretty good feat. It's not every game that can provide 90 hours.

I absolutely love this game, but I've played just over 100 hours and apparently that save game bug on PS3 is found on the 360 shortly after that mark, and now I'm scared to play in case it breaks. :( No doubt I won't be able to keep away from it for too long, but I'll be gutted if I get that problem when I next play it at the weekend.
Glad that you got a decent run out of it though OP, even if you're quitting now.

I tried role playing, which got me another 100 or so hours on top of what OP had. But even that gets hard to stick to when every interaction with NPCs ultimately boil down to either 1) murdering them or 2) going into some cave for them.

There is no economy and NPC interaction to manipulate. Only murder or cave run through.

Again, 220 hours in, great ride, awesome while it lasted. But the flaws that OP mention really kills it once you get there. Which is a shame because Skyrim is a beautifully rendered world with so much more potential if the pieces could feature interaction that is more than "kill (the npc that you are talking to) or fetch from a cave".

Why is everyone bothering about him saying that he is going to stop to play, thats not the main thing of the thread...

The thread is about issues in the game he has encountered, i personally think it is important for such threads to exist because else a gaming company feels to self-confident.

I sadly needs to agree with all points of the OP and add another point, the story, which is absolutely ridicouleous...if this is what Bethesda offers its faithful fans then it is really a shame. The only thing i really like about the game is the design of environments, dont get me wrong, cities are horrible but the outside world is amazing but that isnt enough to make it a good game. For me the game would receive 68 points out of 100.

Record-keeping? Maybe we should get a guinness record thread stickied.

OP: I actually agree with many of your points, but there are SO many of these threads popping up, it's getting to be a bit tiresome.
