111,000 lines of dialogue

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 1:35 pm

If Skyrim was rushed it wasn't for the sake of a gimmicky date. It was going to be a Fall release ... if not Nov '11, then Nov '12. While a whole extra year of development time (and the massive expenses that year would have cost) would have clearly made a better game, I'm not sure the trade-off would have been a good one for Bethesda. Would that extra year have actually resulted in increased sales sufficient to justify the extra time and expense? Doubtful.

I have a few questions about this number.. Skyrim had 60,000 lines of dialogue, fallout 3 had 40,000.. 26,000 confirmed for both the main characters.. So this put it at 25,000 more lines of dialogue than Skyrim with current information.. Unless, the lines the character speaks in fallout 3/skyrim is counted in the reported numbers.. How significant is this? To me it is a good sign of whats to come

I never thought I'd see that number outside of the Shire. Eleventy One Thousand lines hey? :D

Them recording 111,000 lines just for the protagonists wouldn't exclude Todd's earlier statement. 111,000 is a bigger number than 13,000. Therefore, the protagonists have 111,000 lines of dialogue in Fallout 4.

My logic is perfect.

:P

Well, that is pretty heartening. So there are roughly 6,500 lines of dialogue for the PC depending on your six. That isn't all that much.

I think they each recorded 13k lines. I think it would be a stupid PR move to add their lines together to make it sound like they did twice as much.

Ehh...I'd actually prefer fewer lines but it really depends on how they implement them.

Why so, if I may ask? I wouldn't ever criticize a preference, at least not out-right, but I've always personally been curious as to why people would prefer less dialogue, especially in an RPG. Or do you strictly just mean voiced dialogue?

It's a marketing number with no relevant information other than that Bethesda clearly prefers quantity over quality.

There's a difference between "decided it svcks" and "being sceptical".

Besides, I have very few doubts it will be a great TES game. Fun exploration, dungeon crawling and whatnot.

All I'm saying is that the number is meaningless.

Oh I love dialogue, I just don't want my character's dialogue to be too intrusive. They have already dramatically limited RP options in the game. Don't think they will let you be homosixual, childless, lifelong awkward loner, devout pacifist or any kind of character that challenges the beginning narrative and especially not if they continue that narrative throughout the telling of the main story. I imagine they will have our past be fairly significant and that significance will continue through the main game rather than being limited to the introduction. But the latter is simply conjecture. Honestly, I also simply prefer silent protagonists as voiced protagonists always bleed their own personality into dialogue in one manner or another.

It wasnt really the amount of dialouge, it was how it was laid out. It felt a lot like a textbook on the lore of the place. And they couldnt put it anywhere else. All I remember of that conversation was watching graham reload the same weapon over and over again. It was just boring. Sure the lore was neat but just standing there looking at his face for 15 minutes while he rambled on about his people was boring to me.

I love that we now have a third person dialouge with actual camera angles and such, I will be certainly using that as much as possible to actually feel like there is a story being told. Because I remember a lot of times in mass effect or dragon age, where there was a lot of content to listen to but the back and forth with camera angles and such certianly helped it out.

Wow... That's quite a statement.

Try including the rest of the post so that's not pulled out of context next time.

I already read your post in it's original context. I just don't agree with your claim. That's all.

What is there to disagree with? I didn't make an exaggerated claim. What I stated is directly supported by the information released so far. Even if it is a bare bones backstory it has inherently limited RP options because of how it is set up. That isn't to say there will be no RP options, but the options are narrower.

Well, that wasn't too hard since all FO3 characters looked the same =)

I'm sure the face-gen will allow a bit more variety this time around.

To me the voiced protagonist seems to limit role playing more so than does the back-story details. But then, I don't conflate role creation with role playing. One doesn't have to create the part to play the character.

That's quite a large number, and I'd be very happy if that we're true, however, I'm holding out until I actually play the game. They have a habit of saying one thing and delivering another.

I disagree that it limits, but rather creates opportunity.

What does the Sole Survivor do when he/she wakes up, alone, and scared?

Do they become a hunter?

a raider?

a paragon of wasteland justice?

Just another Wastelander just trying to survive?

Do they get involved in the overarching plot?

Do they choose to scour the wasteland for their lost family in hopes they survived, perhaps in vain?

Life begins...AFTER the vault. Rather than starting in a particular role, we can...BECOME that role.

It looks impressive with a glance, but you gotta take into consideration that probably half that dialogue is split between the MALE and FEMALE Protagonist since they had to record lines for both. Still a very impressive number regardless.
