120fps support?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 9:21 am

Hi!

I remember I had to edit Fallout.ini to get Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas to run at more than 60fps. But if you do this in Skyrim, the physics gets whacky. Will Fallout 4 officially support 120fps, and if not can it be enabled successfully?

Here is some propaganda from me to you taken from various tech sites and forums of people experiencing 120hz:

– Wonder in amazement as the 120Hz display produces an easily observable higher fluidity in the animation.

– The ASUS VG236H was my first exposure to 120Hz refresh displays that aren’t CRTs, and the difference is about as subtle as a dump truck driving through your living room.

– Doing precise image editing, as another example, is an area where faster display processing times are desirable.

– 120hz lcd Smoother motion and the lack of RTC artifacts leave a highly positive impression, making you unwilling to return to 60Hz.

– I ran Fraps and found using the display’s 120hz mode that once the framerates were up above 80 there is an amazing solidity and 3d-like quality to the gameplay. Once the framerate hits 100+ – well, the effect has to be experienced to understand it.

So far, the only thing we have heard is "everything will run it at 1080p, and 30fps. No word on whether that is the best it will be able to do.

It's pretty much the same engine as Skyrim though, so, I would not be surprised if the "physics goes wild over 60fps" bug remained.

How much is Pete involved in game development though?

Granted, I would love for the game to do whatever framerate it could on my machine....... 30FPS is playable, and 1080p is the max my monitor supports in any event...... but, more is better, too much might be enough. :D

Hese the vice president of Bethesda Softworks and the PR and marketing manager ;) I'm sure he would know about this. Especially if Todd should have spoke about it in an interview. I don't think Todd would tell anything without permission of the PR manager.

Fighter pilots. They could IDENTIFY an aircraft flashed on a screen for 1/220th of a second. They could tell something was there at 1/300th of a second. The human eye is more capable than most folks realize.

Given the reactions here he would not tell that the sun would raise tomorrow without having an anolyze at PR first. Probably legal too.

Why should they lock pc to 30hz? the information also stated resolution was locked to 1080p who would make the game unplayable on plenty of systems, laptops with lower resolution and people with wider or higher screens than standard HD?

1080p at 30 hz is good news on consoles something you announces, it would be an artificial restriction on pc. Not something you talk much about.

There is a difference between just sitting there with your hands in you pocket and and attempting to interact with what you are watching.

If they really would do this I am done with Bethesda for good.

In what world would ANY game developer limit the PC platform to 1080p and 30fps. That is specs from 8-10 years ago. My monitor cannot even display 1080p properly ( have 1440p) it becomes a blurry mess. Looks awful.

Also 30fps, it is insanely weak and at that resolution.

They best clarify this QUICK, the rumor is spreading fast on the net and people are starting to become pretty enranged on PC.

Increasing the frames helps remove a substantial amount of motion blur that you normally get. Your eyes get a much smoother experience.

Then why didn't he just deny it outright?

He clearly did not give a definitive answer. "Yeah, Fallout 4 will be capped at 30fps." "No, Fallout 4 will not be capped at 30fps."

He's the Vice President of PR and Marketing. He should know the answer. Why didn't he give one?

Simply because he may not know. PR, and Marketing, don't talk to design, and programming.

That doesn't mean they can see 120fps. If that 1/220th of a second was part of the frame our eyes do detect, than it doesnt matter how brief it was there.

Also, you and I are not fighter pilots. Those guys have some of the best eyes in the world, by both naturally when they pursued the career and after many many many hours sunk into actually flying high speed aircraft that trains their eyes and nervous system to be used to such differences. Just saying, only a handful of occupations in the world offer the experience that allows their eyes to pick up the most minute and brief details. My money is on that you do not have such an occupation.

Yes, they have good vision, but, not because they actually need it in combat..... Most combat happens at beyond visual range at this point. If you are actually close enough to SEE your target, then something bad has already happened.

Find yourself an old CRT monitor, then, watch movies at various refresh rates, yes, you CAN tell a difference between 30, 60, and more FPS.

FPS counts in modern games are important to many consumers. It's something that anyone involved with the marketing of a modern game would have to know because it's something they can either use to their advantage or avoid speaking about entirely.

He's Pete [censored] Hines. He should know the answer to that question.

It's corporate america, what they do, or don't do, doesn't always make sense. In some cases, I think they do things specifically DESIGNED to NOT make sense.

You're right, really, but it still bothers me.

If it isn't capped, there's literally no reason not to debunk that rumor right then and there by stating as much.
However, if it is capped, there are thousands of reasons not to admit as much, especially when they're trying to build hype.

So Pete Hines "answering" the way he did points more so toward the rumor being somewhat true.

Here's the real issue with 30fps (if it's true) that no one can deny.

Mods.

We all know having a decent amount of mods can slightly lower your framerate. Normally that's fine because most properly optimized PC games run at 60fps or more on a good pc. 30 fps does not leave us a lot of wiggle room for mods. That non-noticeable drop in framerate suddenly becomes very noticeable, reducing the game to a choppy slideshow. This is the real issue that we should be focusing on.

I don't know why any of you are assuming that Fallout 4 will be locked to 30 FPS on PC. None of the previous games ever have been, why would this one?

There was an article that released earlier today that said this would be the case. After it blew up, Pete Hines said they haven't released any information to his knowledge about framerate, but he didn't deny it. For all we know, this could all be a hoax, but the fact that he didn't outright say it was false is leading many people to discuss the possibility until we get a definite answer.

The human brain, however, does have a "processing speed" for images but there isn't really any kind of definite "limit" as to what "speed" we can see at. I don't think it's really as well understood as a lot of people seem to think it is, either, like a lot of things about the brain. Even if there was I doubt it would be in any way universal to all of humanity.

True, but again I think we're focusing on the wrong thing entirely. The real issue is how this affects mods.
