1995 Daggerfall interview

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:43 am

While looking for Daggerfall videos on YouTube, I found this :

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=I-6LivV8PNs

It's an interview done in 1995 about Daggerfall.
Apart from the cool beta screenshots (Many I never saw before), I noted that Ted Petterson says something about underwater exploration and shipwrecks. Would have been REALLY cool to explore ocean in the Illiac Bay, wouldn't it? :D

Enjoy.

Hehe... I love how they talk about it in the interview as if it is something totally new and revolutionary with quotes like "Best RPG on the PC" And "...Real time combat!"

It kinda makes me chuckle a little inside about how far games have come in only 12 years ^_^

It's a Legendary game.

I think new gamers can't realize the "Wow  " moment old gamers got the first time they played,or heard previews about Daggerfall.

Indeed, I will always remember the first time I played the game. It was the Betony demo that came with my PC Gamer issue. And that was during a very harsh winter. I remember rushing from school to my house on very cold winter days only to go the demo be on the winter season in the game. With this music : http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=KhOL_eY6A8g&feature=related
Then I asked the game for Christmas when it came out and been playing since then. I do enjoy reading the manual sometimes. It's not your typical uninteresting game manual.

Memories.. memories..

Heh, tell me about it. I was excited about Arena when I first read reviews of it, but the game didn't really grab me much. And later I didn't follow the development of Daggerfall at all, but suddenly I read this review of the game that gave it 92%, and was so damn hyped. And played the demo on the magazine CD lots until I saw the game in the local store months later. And then Daggerfall was pretty much the only game I played for 2 years :P

Indeed, I will always remember the first time I played the game.

My strongest Daggerfall moment was the first time I entered a city, which was Daggerfall. I was totally struck in awe by the large gate, the size of the city, the many houses and the life it presented. No game has felt so alive as Daggerfall did back then. Both MW and OB felt rather stale and dead in comparison.

Love that music, even made http://www.bahnhof.se/wb462449/DaggerfallMusic/Daggerfall_SnowingDay.mp3 of it! ^_^

Yes indeed B) Easily the game manual I've read the most. But a lot of computer games had great manuals back in the 90s.

I grabbed all the remade DF music from various modders and replaced all my Oblivion music with it. Best descicion I ever made.

Only 2 years? That's not enough! :P
After 12 years I'm still finding stuff I never saw before. For example, I never got a full daedric suit, or never been a guildmaster.

Whoa, nice one for Snowing Day! It's much better. :) If I had chosen to be an orchestra conductor, I would have done a Daggerfall hommage for sure. Imagine the Daggerfall soundtrack "orchestred". :)

For manuals, I do recall that Arena's was interesting also. Especially the description they gave of the guards. I have the french manual, but it translates to something like : "Guards are good at anything to take you down. Killing, slicing, kicking you to death." :P
Another game manual that I love is Ultima Underworld : The Stygian Abyss. The manual was written as if Lord British himself wrote a note to you, the player. Nothing about "Press F1 to see your character sheet". :)

I'll definatetly do this. :)

Greatest game ever. I picked up Arena just by going thru the shelves at the store. When DF came out I could hardly wait. Like someone said earlier, the cities are the most alive cities I've seen in a game. Folks bustling about and they were enormous. Not these tiny little towns of MW and OB. I'm not complaining, I enjoyed MW and OB, but DF was in a class by itself. The music immersed you in the moment. That haunting nightime music and then getting picked off by an arrow from a Nightblade in the middle of night. You just don't get that nefarious element in MW and OB. Running from ghosts and trying desperately to get to an inn before they clobbered you. Recall and Passwall spells. Yes, the landscape was a repetitive, the dungeons had similar layouts, but I still got lost in plenty of them. Always wondering, will I ever find my way out of here? Haven't had that sense of dread since then. It's such ashame. Beth could do it again if they wanted to. I've heard folks say it's because of the consoles that the games have been dumbed down. I'm not sure if that's true or not. But, one thing is certain, the games have gotten prettier, but they have been simplified significantly from what they use to be. DF will go down as the best game I've ever played. The MQ is head and shoulders better than MW or OB. So much intrigue and you didn't know what was going to happen next. It wasn't predictable. Also, my vote for most memorable NPC in any Beth game is the Worm of Kings from DF. When you found the hidden entrance to the level below and wound around to see him, in his throne room. I'll never forget that. Well, I'll get off my soap box now, but if anyone from Beth is listening, your long time loyal fans all say the same thing, for TES V, go back to your roots. Make it something special this time.

It's not like I've stopped playing the game :P Just that I started to look at other games after 2 years. Like Redguard and Thief: The Dark Project.

Am I the only one surprised at how the video is pretty much composed entirely of features that didn't make it into the final game?

So that's where Peter Molyneux got his marketing strategy.

i don't see why they didn't keep the character transfer, unless they figured it was completely pointless and that people would mainly just use the custom characters.

They were originally supposed to be much more similar but as development went on more and more things were added or changed, and eventually they were simply too different from one another for it to work properly. I mean, there isn't much in common between the two at all when it comes to skills, character generation etc.

How many people from Daggerfall are still on the team? And Todd doesn't count because he svcks. They may not even know what their roots are, and even so it's easy to see that the current team doesn't share the ideals of the original.

Same reason NWN didn't allow you to import your BG2 character. Radically different character systems.

My favorite moment? I was playing late at night when I first entered Daggerfall city. There was a thunderstorm that night (where I lived) & it really added to the ambience, had me a little jumpy. Then, out of nowhere, 'VENGANCE!!!!!' ( If you've pleyed, you know what I mean) & I just about had a heart attack. I instinctively climbed a house to the rooftop & huddled there scared to death until dawn. :) Ahh... the memories.

I like to play with big headphones on, for the same reason. Cut out the rest of the world and get svcked in. That, and DF actually has a small amount of directional sound (left/right speaker), so the headphones really work well.

I like your instincts. Mine involved turning around and running straight out the main gates into the wilderness so I could travel away. Consequently, I hate Daggerfall City. I refuse to go there unless required by the main quest, which I don't do anyways. Even though after a good 12 years of this game I know full well what to expect if I enter that town at night, it still freaks me out.
