1st vs 3rd POV which one do you prefer ?

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 11:27 am

Do you by any chance knows the command name / syntax ?

~ to open the console, then
fov xx
where xx is the desired FOV. 90 usually is enough, but it's to your liking really, so try out different values.

Some people noted that it reverts to default FOV when they load the game and only sticks if they edit the .ini file. It works fine for me though, and I didn't edit anything. If you come across this problem, search the forum, there's a topic with all the ini tweaks.

I used to play 1st person view prior to WoW/Rift, because I mainly played FPS (gamer since 1982). Once I got into WoW/Rift, it was 3rd person only for over 5 years.

As soon as Sky was installed, I went to 1st person view and couldn't handle it anymore.

So, now at level 19, my assassin/thief/bow user plays in 3rd person view, except when she has to sneak. And because you get a bonus using the bow in sneak mode, then it's back to 1st person view. I also find it easier to position the aiming thing/crosshairs in 3rd person view. It seems often in 1st person view that aiming thing/crosshair is harder to line up with the target.

I like 3rd the most, 1st if im looking for loots~

Good work on the machinima, I actually laughed out loud and I normally hate machinima!

Back to topic though, I prefer third person, although some things (shooting, slinging fireballs) are much easier to do in first. As a whole I don't really see rpgs as first person games though.

Prefer 3rd, allows you to see more. However I find I have to switch to 1st for longer range bow attacks and magic attacks since the cursor in 3rd isn't accurate.

I play in 1st person because I feel 3rd person doesn't quite work right. It feels a lot clunkier than 1st, as if there's something a little off with the engine that they didn't get fixed up in time. It could be that the game as a whole isn't as "sharp" or "tight" in its movement or gameplay mechanics they way some other games are, but you just notice it less while your character isn't visible on the screen.

I think I'd prefer 3rd if it was implemented more smoothly.

I played completely in 3rd person for Oblivion, and I was planning on doing the same, but the over the shoulder view is just too bloody annoying in Skyrim, so have played all 80+ hours in 1st person so far.

The default FOV is apparently around 60-70, to put it into perspective. One of the topics with .ini tweaks and all that is http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1255692-skyrim-pc-ini-and-console-tweaks/.
The FOV seems to be pretty random in whether it sticks from one play session to the next, but that could just be me.

Well, given the animations in third person look . . . strange, at best, I prefer first person. However, I definitely prefer first person overall beyond that for archery.

I play third person when travelling, talking, shopping, equipping, admiring, fighting, gawking, running, riding, beholding, sneaking, listening, dying, casting, walking, shooting, swinging, destroying, macing, slashing, burning, electrofying, jumping, screenshotting and swimming...

I loot shelves and small items in first person ;)

3rd person for RPGs, 1st person for shooters. I can deal with FPP in a good RPG, but its points off the score in my book.

Didn't vote.

3rd when I'm out exploring, 1rst when in caves or combat.

I need both.

I play 3rd person only...If Fallout or Skyrim were 1st person only, I would never have touched them.

WOW I am surprised at the amount of 3rd person players. I play in first, using 3rd to view my character and sometimes peek around corners while sneaking, that is it. I cant stand watching anyone play in third person in combat.

I basically do almost everything in 1st person. Battle, exploring etc. I only ever use third person for viewing my character, that can also be while Im traveling.

I think you can move the cam with the mouse wheel, but you can't rotate around your char like you could in OB.....

You can rotate it as long as you stand still. I personally like 3rd person on occassion during fights because it looks much better than the bland Oblivion 3rd person. Not to mention the animations in it totally ruined the 3rd person.

I use 1st Person for combat and for looting, and then 3rd person for pretty much everything else, like speaking to people, exploring, walking around the towns. All that stuff. So I'm mostly in 3rd person, and yeah, I'd say that's what I'd prefer.

Same here. I find when exploring that the 1st person view is much better for imersion, as the sounds around you can indicate where mobs are etc, and infact I find it almost kinda creepy have to turn round to look for where the noise came from, and what is it. When I am in third person, I could be playing Wow or a similar game. Also Combat feels sweet in 1st person. Ironically I cant stand First person shooters, but in Skyrim, 1st person all the way! :flamethrower:

People actually play in third person? I thought it was purely for admiring your character.

This. How and why would someone use third when they can play in first?

I like to mix it up, I tend to go into third when im running about doing nothing. But I'll always switch to first person in combat.

I perfer 1st because, to me, your character is too close to the screen in 3rd person so half the screen is blocked D:
