1st person vs 3rd person and male vs female

Post » Sun Sep 26, 2010 2:04 pm

Same here. Makes no sense if you're a male yourself.

I don't follow. "Roleplaying" is trying to play a role, typically one that is different than yourself. Altering race, outlook, personality... why wouldn't gender and/or sixuality go into that list as well?

(And then there's the part where authors & scriptwriters write the roles of opposite-six characters. And various traditional/historical forms of acting - like back in Shakespearean England, or in Japan - where all roles male & female were played by male actors. And various modern films where roles have been played by gender-flipped actors, like Tilda Swinton in Orlando or Cate Blanchett's turn as Bob Dylan. Etc, etc, etc.)

What do you prefer?

Mine:
3rd person (I like to know how my character looks like)
Female (I would rather look at the back of a female TBH)

3rd person female! Yay, being a minority. I only do first person when I'm looking for something specific in a room, when I'm shooting my bow (duh), and when I'm opening looks and stuff. I feel I miss so much of the world if all I can see is from a first person view. The beauty and vastness of the game can't overwhelm you quite as much. And, plus, when I'm in first person, I feel as if I'm playing Halo or Black Ops. As much as I love sci-fi shooters, I want the style I play with in those emphatically seperated from my style in a fantasy game.

I play mostly female characters. The perspective view depends more on what type of skills I use though. For mêlée I go for 3rd person because you get a much better view of your surroundings that way, but for spells and bows I go with 1st for precision. When not in combat I will always use 3rd.

In Oblivion I used 1st person for everything but sneaking and riding horses, so we will just have to wait and see.

And I always play as a male.

Back when I was using an Xbox to play Morrowind, I tooled around with playing female characters (I'm male myself), but after awhile I just stick to being a male Orc.

But now that I'm on the PC, and have access to all the mods I want, I no longer have any incentive to be stuck as a big ugly Orc dude. Don't get me wrong, I love being a big ugly Orc dude, if I could turn into one in real life and scare the pants off people who tick me off I would. But after awhile I need some variety, I need to be able to enjoy playing other races, playing as women.

And with the mods I can download/make myself, it's actually fun to do so, as opposed to being limiting for me. The whole reason I stuck to being a big bad Orc man was because it was about the only option I had besides Nord for creating the kind of Daedra-stomping force of nature I wanted. I tried being a female Orc, and got some decent results out of it, more than comparable to my male Orc characters, but in terms of their appearance... meh. Male Orcs are always ugly, but that can make them look bad to the bone. Female Orcs in vanilla Morrowind are just plain ugly, no matter what they're wearing. (Argonians are cool too, I've made some stellar Fighter-Thieves out of them, but it's only in Oblivion that they look all that intimidating.)

Of course with mods that all changes, and that has been immeasurably valuable in helping to create the perfect Morrowind gaming experience I seek (I don't have Oblivion, and don't really want to either). Now I can implement any number of mods to make myself a hot, powerful, tough, tall Nord chick who looks like 13, and thunders across the Grazelands hacking Golden Saints into golden pieces with a huge axe she carries in one mighty hand, writing her name on the walls of thoroughly gutted ruins, while taking some time to herself every once and awhile to go diving for pretty pearls of all shapes, sizes, and colors.

First person and male. I try to become my character, not necessarily roleplay an interesting person. I frequently ask myself "what would I do if I were actually in this situation?"

Judging from countless Oblivion mods, it's seems like many people view the game as a sort of porm simulation, where they get a chance to watch a piece of tail in 3rd person. Pretty pathetic, if you ask me. It's a game.

This is so true. But then again, it is the exact reason why 99% of actors and actresses are pretty in some way on TV or movies. We wouldn't be watching TV or movies if they were just average or ugly people on the shows. So everything we watch on TV and in movies is mild port simulation.

It is just human nature to do so. To say otherwise you just lieing to yourself.

I'll never understand why some boys play as female characters

It's actually really simple as Ectoplasm has said, it's porm simple as that. Younger males need the tittilation factor, which is like I said above when we all watch TV. For alot of women, it's watching Soap Operas, for men, it's beatuifull actressesses. Do you really think Megan Fox and people like her are hired for thier acting skills? Come on, that is mild porm right there, just like Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt in the begining of their careers as well. Alot of good looking actors and Actresses have gotten better in thier acting, but in the begining when they were nobodies, just like Tom Cruies or anyone in Top Gun were hired by thier good looks. That is why we have no plain jane and joes in movies and TVs unless that show needs to feel to portray normal looking people.

It's a fact of life. We all need a titiliattion factor in our games. Anyone who says otherwise, can your honestly tell me you would play 3rd person if your female charater was a size 24+ and over 120 pounds? No you wouldn't or most of you males out there wouldn't be playing females.

It is all about the titillation factor or for the 3rd person "behind" factor.

Games are just like movies and TV shows, it's a get away for all of us. Some people like to experiance the six factor. For alot of women as I said, it's Soap Operas, for alot male it's video games if done properly.

Rememeber, when it comes to six, for most women, it's on the emotional level, so that really can't be conveyed in computer games but soap operas, while for males it's the physicall value what you see with your eyes, so that can be done in computer games. That is why also you don't have FAT males in Soap Operas, because it is the titilation value for alot of females as well. This way they can have the physical as well as the emotional as well.

You do know there's a difference between "appreciating the aesthetically pleasing" and "porm"?

(Not to say that there aren't actual six mods, but the majority of "pretty" mods aren't six.)

So that makes Carlin, Dangerfield, the Pythons, and most of the Seinfield cast part of the remaining 1%?

(IMO its not a percentage of TV, but a percentage of the population that watches it.)

I've never had the urge to 'role play' a female... I seem to be quite a rarity in this department... hmmm

I play female toons most of the time but role playing? Nah. I do it for cosmetic purposes. Most RPGs I play have better graphics for female toons like clothing and such.

Makes me enjoy Daggerfall all the more.

There have been female members here that adamantly refused to play a male character ~even to the extent of shunning a masterwork RPG for the sole reason that the PC was immutably male.

Male...1st person...that is how I have always played.

Male in real life...always have been, always will be...what, do you think I am going to waste money on a six-change?

To me the immersion is just much better in ES games using first person and immersion is what they are all about, losing yourself in the sandbox.

If I had to pick male or female I would pick male, but I want to be able to play both.

*shrugs* I generally don't when given the option. That said, more often than not a game will force me to play a male character. That's not going to stop me from play the game, though.

i disagree. the vast vast majority of "beauty" mods were all about six. the dozens of nvde body types and all of bikini armors for the various modded body types. one time i tried to find female body armor that actually looked like armor and i literally went through 20 pages on nexus before finally giving up. they are ALL skimpy bikini armors.

there is no denying what the point of those mods is. if i was a girl looking to play a realistic female character it would be nearly impossible to find armor that didnt look like it came from the dressing room of a strip club.

i dont mind the mods at all in fact i like looking at the pictures myself......but i wish people would stop pretending what the real reason behind them is.

I don't mind playing a large woman, I just don't want her to be fat. There is a difference. I admit part of it is visual stimulation (I do love swimming in 3rd person), but it's also the realism factor. Anyone, male or female, or engages in the kind of rigorous activity TES characters often do isn't likely to be overweight. Their face might still be unattractive, but the rest of them typically won't.

If there was a mod available to play as a seven-foot, 200+ pound, Olympian-physiqued Nord woman, I'd be all over it. It'd be about appearance for sure, but not in a sixual manner, more in the "I-can-take-down-the-gods-and-look-cooler-than-Bear-Grylls-while-doing-it" fashion.

That is why also you don't have FAT males in Soap Operas, because it is the titilation value for a lot of females as well. This way they can have the physical as well as the emotional as well.

This is something I feel needs to be pointed out far more often. Take the show Bones, for example. I would never, ever get the role of playing someone like Agent Booth on TV. Sweets, yes, or perhaps some floating intern most of the audience probably doesn't care about. But not Booth, not in a million years. Doesn't even matter how buff I get. Why? Because I don't look like the stereo-typical advlt male we see so often in TV programs with a primarily female audience. The strong jaw, the cheekbones, the whole oozing masculinity, I don't have any of it. I'm less than years away from 30 but you wouldn't know to look at me. If I drank, I'd get carded in every bar I walk into, guaranteed.

Yes I know this reeks of bitterness and jealousy, and I admit I wish I looked much more manly and advlt, but you can't tell me other people out there aren't sick of the false idea that only men care about looks. Any TV show with a female target demographic has at least one Taylor Lautner, or David Boreanas, or that dork who landed the role of Spider-Man in the reboot. And the tactic works like a charm.

Oblivion i pretty much only used 3rd person when exploring or when i get cocky with my bow. Fallout New Vegas i used 3rd person alot more often then 1st so who knows, with Skyrims 3rd person view being improved i just might play it mainly in 3rd. I tend to play as both sixes it really depends on my mood... Im a female.
