1st person vs 3rd person and male vs female

Post » Sat Sep 25, 2010 11:12 pm

You don't RP your toon?

Based on the ideas of what "RP" is on these forums? Nope. I've never come up with a background, my choice of characters in Oblivion is things like "okay, this time I want to do a 2-handed / Light Armor / Destruction build", and then pick a race & face for appearance. If there's a major path difference (like in FO:NV, side with the NCR / side with the Gangers / etc), which major route I'll take will also be one of the initial decisions along with build. But that's it.

Judging from countless Oblivion mods, it's seems like many people view the game as a sort of porm simulation, where they get a chance to watch a piece of tail in 3rd person. Pretty pathetic, if you ask me. It's a game.

I've never played as a female before, but I usually don't have more than one character. Although with the new character models I just might have to give different races a try. Also I like 3rd person cuz I like to see my character and the environment around me. I almost always go into 1st if I'm inside a building however. Just for ease of maneuvering and picking things up.

I did say I've never RP'd a female character, but I will say that replacing that male Nord in the trailer and seeing a female beast race use that dragon shout seems pretty cool.

To answer the questions, I play in the most suitable view for the situation (1st person for combat, archery, magic, item manipulation, etc., and 3rd person for general terrain movement, since you can see then your feet and have more control). I'm male, so that's what I play as.

It always annoyed me how hard it was to find a decent looking suit of armor for my characters. Too many of them were too revealing or had other similar problems.

What do you prefer?

Mine:
3rd person (I like to know how my character looks like)
Female (I would rather look at the back of a female TBH)

1st Person. Male Redguard. I've never been able to 'Role Play' a female character. Wait, thats a lie. Tomb Raider, but that was forced.

The same reason some girls play as male characters. You can be who you want; try new things; look at the world from different perspectives!

Male, first person. I play as female characters from time to time but personally I find that they don't feel as much like as an extension of myself as when I roleplay males.

Female (I would rather look at the back of a female TBH)

Yeah yeah yeah...I know what you mean. Playing as a member of your own six feels so wrong. I probably turned bisixual just by looking at the Skyrim screenshots of all those muscular, shirtless men fighting each other. <_<

Some games give you different dialog and handle some situations differently if you play a female character.

Personally, 3rd PV , first male, then female, then depends, mostly on the types of mods I can create based on the models...for example, I modded about 30 different female armors for FNV, since the concept of the mod was an all-female gang... I ended transferring the mod to Fallout 3 as FNV pissed me off... but still, I did a few Fallout 3 playthroughs with a female character just so I can see my creations.

I am with Kiralyn2000: I don't see the character I am playing in a role playing game any different than I see Pacman.. just the character I am playing at the moment. To me, role playing doesn't mean I pretend to be the character, just that my character is going to play a role in the story of the game.

Almost always male. I use both 3rd and 1st. 3rd for checking out my character and traveling. 1st when inside and for combat. On later playthroughs, I give females a shot, but it's harder to relate and rp.

LOL.
I play primarily in Third (3rd) except when targeting or trying to closely inspect something or someone. After putting ALL that effort into customizing my face, my hair, my clothes, my skin tone, etc. etc., I want to see myself in action, dammit. And it isn't like they have a wealth of working mirrors in the game.

To the op, yes, I too prefer looking at the female from that rear view, but it still doesn't prompt me to play as one. Still, to each his or her own, I say.

First walkthrough: male, 1st person
Second walkthrough: female, 3rd person (I will start when some amazing race mod -like moonshadow elves or elves of lineage- comes out)

I most definitely role play. My character represents me in my game . . . so female, and I switch between 1st and 3rd, as somethings are just easier to navigate in 3rd person . . . combat is always done in 1st person.

My characters are separate from me - I'm just some guy sitting in a chair pushing keys while they run around the world and do whatever it is that they do. I play both male and female characters, just depending on what strikes me as potentially interesting and switch views depending on where they are and what they're doing. Generally when they're traveling, I stay in third person, then switch to first for combat (just because targeting is a hassle in third person). In town I switch constantly, since I prefer to watch the character interact with NPCs but I don't like the funky things the third person camera does when they go through doors and such. And in dungeons they pretty much stay in first for the reasons already mentioned - targeting's a hassle in third and the camera does funky things around walls and going through doors.

My characters are Avatars. I am the godlike being behind their motivations and movements. They ARE a representation of me. . . and yet they are not. They are a manifestation of me in a secondary reality, i.e. the game world, as I choose to be in that gameworld. All that I said above about playstyle preffernce still stands.

1st person, male. I switch to 3rd person only when travelling.

I also can't roleplay a female. A female that acts and thinks like a male doesn't work.

I prefer to be a male in first person, most of time, but I do tend to switch to third person when I'm running through the woods or something. It helps me get more immersed into the game.

Also, I tend to be in third person more when I'm a female, because hey...dat ass.
