1st person vs 3rd person and male vs female

Post » Sun Sep 26, 2010 5:10 am

I'll never understand why some boys play as female characters

Like I said earlier (and in a variety of "ewww! boys playing girls is ICKY!" threads on the WoW forums), the character I'm pushing around in the game is not me. It is someone else.

Which makes it no different than playing Lara Croft, or Bayonetta, or Chun Li, or Kitana, or.... well, you get the picture. :)

I also can't roleplay a female. A female that acts and thinks like a male doesn't work.

Considering how few speech options & active character actions (walk, attack, cast, sit in chair) there are in these games, I'm not sure how one "acts and thinks" a character in any specific way.

I always play in first person and frequently use 3rd person to check out my character. As for male or female, my first character will be male..I have a much easier time roleplaying a male rather than a female. But I'm sure I'll throw a female into the mix after a bit.

Yup, this. All of it. Almost everyone does it, it's inevitable.

I prefer third person as I can do first person in my shooters.
Oblivion kinda svcked that I had to run around to see my character in third but had to switch to first to cast magic or fight.
Didnt like the switching back and forth all the time.
This could be solved by putting cross hairs in third person, like in first person, that would eliminate the switching.
As for character, has to be female, cant stand watching some dudes butt as I dungeon crawl.

First person all the way. I don't like third person perspective except in games that have you controlling multiple characters. I'm male, so that's what I play. As for the eye candy, that's what companions are for.

I do both. Combat is first person, walking around is third person.

Also I generally create a craptonne of different character, both male and female. Generally male for fighter characters and female for magic.

I don't really "RP" characters. Generally when I play, a character is just an extension of myself, and I make different characters that I use interchangeably depending on how I'm feeling at that particular time. This is why I have so much trouble being evil in games, because I just don't like doing evil things.

That being said, my choice of gameplay is definitely an even switchoff between the two. I play both male and female characters depending on which I feel like using at the time, and I switch off between first and third person when I play (well, not quite. I plan to do that in Skyrim, but I didn't do it often in Oblivion because I'm not a fan of Oblivion's jerky animations). I find it to be more fun to play third person during highly combat-oriented moments.

Exactly

When making same six and/or same species characters you often wind up with

A- A carbon copy of yourself, play the game first person, non-RP. Its fun but you can only do it a few times before the game starts to get boring.

B- A projection of somebody you are trying to be. RP

So if you change it up and make a character that has very little in common with you, it generally opens the game up a bit, you get to play it in ways you normally wouldn't and see the story and setting from a third person narrative as apposed to a first person narrative.

So much this.

This same subject comes up repeatedly on the Oblivion and Morrowind boards too, and it always comes down to the same thing. The real difference between the people who play characters of the opposite six and the people who can't understand why anyone would do that (or have their own snickering theories regarding why) is that the former treat their characters as separate individuals and the latter treat their characters as extensions of themselves.

As a matter of fact, the very first thing that I suggest to anyone who wishes to learn how to play distinct characters rather than just extensions of themselves is to make a character of the opposite six. That pretty much forces you to treat the character as a separate person, since s/he can't just be an extension of yourself. The first time I played a female character completely changed the way I look at roleplaying games, and I'd never go back now. I learned from following along with her how to treat the game character as a completely separate person, and now I can do it with any character. And there's just so much more to be had from the games if one creates truly distinct individuals and just lets them go their own way in the world. There's pretty much only one story I could tell of me in Tamriel, but I don't think I could ever run out of stories to tell of other people in Tamriel.

as a guy, playing female characters when you have a choice seems weird to me. i tried making female characters in morrowind and oblivion to try and understand why but it just bugged me. however, if its a game where you can only play as a female it doesnt phase me one bit. i had no problems playing the girl in borderlands and in fact she was my favorite character if a bit on the overpowered side. i enjoyed mirrors edge alot and i used to play tomb raider all the time on playstation. i guess it just bugs me if there is the option to make a male character.

there is one type of game where i love playing a female and that is MMORPGs. i tried out a female character in WoW a couple years back and i got so much free crap just by flirting with other players it was unbelievable. apparently some people are so desperate on those servers they will give up anything to an avatar of a girl that giggles.

It's interesting how different experiences can be, even in the same game.... I've played several female characters in WoW. Heck, I even decided to live the stereotype once - I figured, if I was going to play a Barbie Blood Elf paladin, I might as well go all the way.... that character collected all the prettiest "bikini plate" that there was to get. Wore nothing else from lv40 to 70. And I never got flirted with or got free stuff. (could be that it was so obvious that it was probably a guy playing the toon. Heh.)

I'm a man. I like being a man. I like to carry that over into my RP, where I can continue to be a man. And I like to experience it (in some games) from a first person perspective.

I use both... First person can help immersion, and it's easier to battle in sometimes. Third person makes it harder to be sneaked up on, and... You know just getting to witness your character in all of their glory is very nice. Especially with the better looking armor/weapons.

yeah you have to kind of play it up. i learned the cute emotes and kept typing *giggle* when i would talk with other players. the best part is when other people that knew who i really was would start telling the people how hot i was and i was single and wanted to meet some cute guys on WoW. i got alot of yellow and purple loot that was levels above me so it saved me lots of money at the auction house later on.

try giving that a shot and see if it works?

1st person female.

I do switch to 3rd on occasion if I need to see something in a wider view.

Lucky you. I got hit on enough, and seriously enough (by two guildies), that I eventually went into hiding Horde-side.

I tend to play first person but that's just because it's been a pain in the ass in the previous games to play in 3rd if that changes so will my style of play. And I usually play as a dude but I think I'll try a lady this time around.

I like to believe I am actually in the game so I play 1st person 70-90% of the time. Also I find males more appealing in TES games as in easier to play on, I'm sure sure why though.

What do you prefer?

Mine:
3rd person (I like to know how my character looks like)
Female (I would rather look at the back of a female TBH)

In tes games or in games in general? tes games excell at first person and reminds me of those old text base dungeon games made a century or five before I was born. But in general I enjoy playing RPGs in third person.

Love the first person, puts me right in the action of it all. And I play as a male since I am male and I like to imagine myself in the games I play whenever possible.

I'll often switch back between First Person and Third, if I have to aim a spell or a bow, or search for something I'll drop into first person. If' I want to get a better view of the battle, or am blocking behind my shield, or If I'm fighting Melee or more specifically running into a room and bashing at my opponent tell he stops moving, I'll go with third Person.

And I often play female, that way if a really ugly monster scares me, I can cower behind my characters shapely buttocks.

Male: Because I am one.
3rd person: I do both of them equally, actually. Though I'm usually in 3rd person while traveling and 1st while in combat.

Not voting in this poll, because like Bo Jackson, in both options I would choose "both."

I constantly switch from 1st to 3rd person, and will play both females and males in Skyrim.

That being said, my first character will be female.

This. ^^
Except I don't know if I will play a male or female character. I usually play a male though, I find it easier to RP a male considering I am one.
