1st person vs 3rd person and male vs female

I will use first person exclusively, and I will probably play characters of both sixes.

I would vote 3rd person female, but since I am female, I don't know if this would give the wrong impression. You seem to assume that someone who plays a 3rd person female is absolutely checking out their pixels. . . Not true. Women play these games as well.

Third person preferred... Gender can be left to a coin toss. (It doesn't affect the story in any tangible way does it?)

It seems like all the people who play as females also play in 3rd person. I wonder why?
(Unless thats just a coincidence)

Could it be that 3rd person provides a broader view and provides a better understand of your surroundings?

I can't tell if my joke sailed over your head or not. But yes. that is a very good reason to use it.

In TES I play exclusively in first person, and I play as a male character. Being male myself, it seems natural to do so.

However, I once roleplayed a female character in a traditional (i.e., pen-and-paper style) RPG. I did it because I thought it would be an interesting challenge--to see if I could avoid falling back on my own preconceived notions and actually roleplay a convincing female. I have to admit it was a lot easier to do this because I was playing online with a group of people who lived in various countries around the world--I think it might have been harder if I had been face-to-face with these people, as they would have been constantly reminded that I was a guy and may have felt weird about it.

One of the other player's sisters read the game transcripts and were convinced that I was a girl. I don't know if that means I succeeded or if it's just proof of the power of suggestion. It was a fun game, at any rate.

Not that any of this has to do with TES--I just mention it to say that, while I always play male characters in TES, I can understand the idea of roleplaying a female.

No, it didn't. Which is exactly why I responded like I did. ^^

Worst part of TES & FO3/NV ~Combat in TPP.

Every time there is combat, my character shoots at the dirt.

It depends on the character creator to if I choose a male or female.
I'd probably chose 3rd person on the outside and 1st person inside caves.

I generally stick mostly to first person in Morrowind and Oblivion, using third person only to look at the character I created on occassion, the third person view in those games is just not very well designed, and they work much better in first person. Even if Skyrim succeeds in delivering a third person view that's actually suitable for playing in, though, I'll still probably stick mostly to first person, because I've come to see the Elder Scrolls as a primarily first person game with the option to play in third person, and so I think I'll stick to first person unless I want to admire my character.

As for my choice of six, I play both sixes, depending entirely on what I feel like playing at the time, I've always done this in games that give the player such an option, and expect to continue doing so. Some say they only play their own six because they have trouble role-playing the opposite one, but I've never had problems with that myself. I can feel comfortable playing either six. In the end, I want to role-play as someone I'm not in real life, if I just role-play as myself, then that's just boring, and a member of the opposite six is something I'm obviously not in real life.

It seems like all the people who play as females also play in 3rd person. I wonder why?

Maybe for some people it's like that, but for me, whether I'm playing a male or female character doesn't effect whether I use third person or not. If I want to stare at a woman's back, there's plenty of websites online that can satisfy that desire, so there isn't really any need to play the game that way. And in any case, since most of the time my character's will be covered in armor or clothes the only difference between how their backsides will look in third person depending on whether they're male or female is the proportions.

Your not, most males play as males most of the time. I never have and I can't see myself ever playing as a female.

Oh good, lol... thought I might be missing out on something!

I used to play Unreal Tournament 2003, and all the guys I played with played as females, but this was down to the body size being a smaller target.

Other than that, I have no interest in playing as the opposite six.

I'll most likely play a male dark elf.

I play in the first person view mostly and jump out once and awhile to 3rd person to see what my character looks like. I voted female but i could go eitherway once i'm on the chacter screen. I play a mix so it really depends how i feel when i make the character,

.. or it could be that one who plays a game a few times in 3PV wants to see some variety in the character, as the armors for male and female are usually at least slightly different, and some games do offer different options/dialogue if playing one gender or the other.

I just don't like FPV at all... seeing 2 hands in front of me all the time, or the barrel of a gun...that's just dumb, to me. Watching your character in Ob run with his/her sword in front is like watching a kid run with scissors.. About the only time I use FPV is if the character I play has a gun with a scope or a bow.

On a side note, I find it funny that a lot of "immersionists" play on FPV. Talk about immerion breaking :)

First person, and partially third person just to check apperance.

I play mostly male characters(although I am a female), I often need a incentive to play a female. Perhaps I'll make an exception this time around just for the sake of it.

I'd prefer to play in third person, but I'll wait to see how they have handled it in Skyrim. I'm going to play a male character my first time.

I play in 1st person exclusively, but like everyone else I sometimes check out my character in 3rd person. I don't like 3rd person at all, in fact for me it's a reason not to play a game if it has 3rd person view exclusively (last game I tried was Two Worlds 2 - I really wanted to like it, but the 3rd person was so annoying that I had to stop playing it). I hate if my character blocks the most important part of my field of view all the time, I can't see what's directly in front of me and it's an immersion breaker as well for me - makes the game I play feel like a Jump n' Run and not like a RPG if I constantly have to stare at the back of my little 'action figure' hopping around and swinging his sword.

I play male characters only (but I have made a female character or two for the fun of it). Role-playing is nice and all, but role-playing a woman is pretty hard if you ask me (if you are not a woman that is).

I shift in and out of first and third person all the time so I can't answer the poll. Third person for exploration and movement and first person for combat and interaction most of the time for me.

I'll be a male character. I don't mind playing female characters but when the character is an extension of myself I'm perfectly happy being male.

First person female. I do use third person when I'm travelling (running, jumping, swimming, etc.).

I've never RP'd a female character either.

Same here. Makes no sense if you're a male yourself.

I'm not sure. If they're equally smooth I'll obviously be in third when wandering around or in a safe place such as a town. Since first person is a bit zoomed in while third gives you a better view of your immediate surroundings, I might use long range magic and marksmanship in first and then switch to third when something gets close or I have to go around a corner in a dungeon. If the camera turns faster in first, that would change things.
