1st person body?

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 5:16 am

As I said in a thread about mounts....Its ridiculous to look down into your empty saddle when riding....so i want in in for this if for no other reason

It is actually one of my pet peeves in first person games...but a lot of games have got it right now, there isn't really much excuse not to... if modders can get it in game and working then it should be easy for the devs

I would be quite surprised if they don't include it.

I didn't vote because there is no option for "I couldn't care less"
But yeah, would be nice but it doesn't bother me one bit if it doesn't make it into the game.

This. I keep hearing the (meaningless since it's so over- and mis-used) call "It's more immersive," but here's the problem: I've played 3 games which had this "oh-so-immersive" feature, and never once noticed it until someone pointed it out to me. How immersive is something you never even notice?

So for now I'll just vote no, and if the OP changes the poll later I can delete my vote and move it to the more accurate "I couldn't possibly care any less."

Why did they actually go the extra length and remove this feature from l4d2 when it was in l4d1.

They realized how few people actually notice it or even care, thus realizing that overall it was a waste of time?

For me it's a big deal. Diagonal running, seeing my feet in 1st, they may not be essential gameplay wise, but they are essential for a simulator, and for me TES is more like a sandbox fantasy world simulator. It features a lot of things that are not essential for other RPGs: free roaming, loads of clutter, swimming, going anywhere, opening everything, jumping everywhere. For such a detailed world simulator being a floating ball is not really cool.

For realism and immersion it should be added, but I am not too bothered. I walk looking forwards not looking downwards and if I want to inspect my armour I can do that from 3rd person mode.

I hate it when games dont have first person bodies
The first thing I did in Bioshock when I first got onto the lighthouse was look down and say "awwwww" because there was no body.

honestly, that looks worse than not having it. The view angle on the body is screwed up enough (the head, looking down, wouldn't be that far forward of the chest) that it's less "realistic" than having no body.

That's how I felt when I watched that video too... like the hunchback of notre-dame

Absolutely. It's one of my BIGGEST pet peeves when developers don't include this feature. The only reason why it was never included in older FPSs was because they didn't have the technology to do so well. Now the technology exists but developers of first person games almost never include it. I hate being a floating camera, and I hate how no one seems to notice it or care.

It would be an awesome thing to add in a game aiming to be as immersive as this.

This.

If The Chronicles of Ridike could do it on the Xbox and The Darkness could do it on the 360 why can't Skyrim?

Because it doesn't actually do anything, and they could use those man-hours of programming time on something meaningful to the gameplay?

A very important point IMO, and even though it's been said a hundred times it still isn't enough. Mirror's Edge is indeed a good role model.

Mirror's Edge is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3VnWYt9flM though.

** It would be good to have a body. Arx Fatalis did this years ago (and pretty decently done too).

What little you see in Mirror's Edge (FPP), is very well done.

Well then. let's get rid of your arms, those have no bearing on gameplay, you'll just see your weapon. Oh and let's get rid of the landscape, it doesn't matter, you're just going to fight monsters anyway. Actually, let's get rid of third person entirely, you don't need to see your pc. Do you see were I'm going with this? There are a lot of things that aren't important to gameplay, but they're there, and they add something, and people like them.

You know, if it where any other game, I really wouldn't mind to much. But something about TES games make me wish that you could see your body in 1st person view.

It has practical use too. I mean, I've fallen off ledges several times because I couldn't exactly judge how far away I am from the edge... It's kinda hard to tell since you can't see your feet.

Look at this concept art of Mirror's Edge:

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/mirrorsedgepainting061109.jpg

Even Mirror's Edge itself didn't end up looking this good (you can see more of the body here than you can in the actual game). But if Skyrim could come anywhere near to this, it would be awesome.

Please do not speak of Mirror's Edge, it's lack of sequel greatly depresses me. I liked that game so much, and had one of the best 1st person bodies views ever, it should be in every FP game IMO. I don't get upset if it's not in a game, but I do prefer it to be.

This happens to be one of my favorite things about games that have it. It's just that big of a deal to me. It really adds to the immersion, and I would love to see it.

Or at least a mod for it, if they do end up allowing 3rd part mods on consoles.

I won't make a fit about it if it isn't in there, but I would love to see it.

They ARE worrying about actual gameplay mechanics. A lot. But that doesn't mean they're cutting out everything else. Animations, graphics, and immersion are all part of the game as well, and the developers know it.

So, I'd rather they worry about adding even more gameplay mechanics rather than worrying about some pointless aesthetic because someone's pwecious immersion was broken.

heck yeah. I had previously had reservations about having this kind of view, since I was concerned that the body would obstruct too much of the screen when I looked down but that looked beautiful.

@xarnac I have those kind of concerns too, but in this case the same people who would be working on designing the graphics and coding of this probably would not be the same people who are working on adding new weapons, quests or combat so very little if any effort on game play mechanics would be diverted to do this. besides, this guy seems to have done alot of the work, and we know that bgs has taken inspiration in other mods like for the bows.

Then save it for mods. Have the graphics people work on getting magic animations to coexist so we can have spell creation. Way more important than seeing my legs. But this is just my opinion on the matter.

thats fine too, except for maybe the people who really want it. since it took this long for 1st person legs mod to come out for OB so who knows for SK, but I don't really care either way. it was just that before seeing this I thought 1st person bodies would be obstructive.

I have been taking a break from SK forum for a bit so I don't know what you mean about the magic animations and why they might not coexist, but I will admit that if it came to it I would prefer spell creation to 1st person legs. but thats a given.

IIRC all it takes is renaming the body & legs to Arms in the model. Its been a while, but (again IIRC), the engine makes everything not part of the arms invisible (most likely as a frame-rate savings). FO3 does the same thing with severed limbs... It copies the whole limb and just makes ? transparent. There really is nothing to this ~it can be done accidentally when making an armor or clothing mod.

I did it deliberately in this video ~so that the PC's FPP view stares through the bars (that are a part of the models chest).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTw7M7gAUKc

**In practice though, I think one would carefully and selectively make certain parts of (each and every wearable clothing) model, visible or invisible; with the intention of making the legs & hips look good in first person. Not doing this could cause various poses to have clipping across the FPP camera in a bad way.
