1st Person FOV

While I'm glad that Zennimax has listened to the fans and included a fully functional 1st person view into the game I can't help but wonder, why is there no FOV slider? The default FOV (what is it 65?) is entirely too low and I feel like my character is wearing a set of magnifying glasses. Are there any plans to remedy this? It would be quite a shame to go through the entire game in 3rd person view.

This is indeed bothersome and it really should be there. Though I'm afraid it's going to be dismissed by telling you to stick with third person if you start feeling sick from playing in first person... there's never been an FoV slider in the single player Elder Scrolls games either, but at least it's still configurable via console commands or .ini editing. I had major issues with getting headaches from Morrowind and Oblivion before I figured out how to appropriately configure the FoV for them. I doubt we'll have that luxury here.

I want a wider 3rd person FOV too. I have tried sitting as far from my screen as possible, but I get nausea even in 3rd person view if I turn the camera too much and fast. 1st person is completely unplayble.

I have already written /feedback about this two times in different Betas. A wider FOV would also make the game much more immersive.

I agree... I get nausea too in console skyrim if I sit too close (and sometimes even if I sit further back). Playing ESO on the computer was better, but by the end of the session I did get a bit of vertigo. I would like to play this game on the console in 1st person, but before I buy the console version, I really will have to make sure it won't make me sick when I do.

It's not fully functional, it's unplayable. I can't comprehend why developers think FOV 65-70 is acceptable, it's just awful.

If you're still having problems in 3rd person and sitting far from your screen, would a FOV slider actually help? I've read that reducing screen brightness or ambient room light can help a lot with simulation sickness as well.

First person in this game is unplayable.

Why would you even play an MMO in first person when you have to option to go 3rd? You loose so much character awareness

As an avid bow-fighter, I used first-person extensively throughout the beta. Believe it or not, folks like different things, and that hardly makes them mindless.

A FOV slider would fix everything. It isn't a good gameplay experience if you have to look your screen from so far away that it looks tiny. Hardly immersive experience. Wide FOV + Big screen = Immersion without nausea.

Ive.. never gotten nausea in first person... and changing fov screws with my crosshair placement. It drove me nuts.

I don't have too of a much problem with a narrow FOV in other games like Skyrim's or Fallout's although I did decide to change them to 85 because it felt a little more natural without making me feel like I was experience the world like a fish would. With TESO's though it did actually get to a stage where I was more comfortable with a third person camera perspective just behind my character and even zoomed quite far back in the middle of a battleground after about 20 minutes of playing like that.

This game needs an FOV slider going up as far as 130, I'll probably be able to live with 85 however.

But a FOV sufficiently large to reduce that degree of simulation sickness would also make everything look equally tiny, and if I'm reading you right, equally counter-immersive. The things I suggested might help alleviate the need for either sitting far back or jacking up the FOV.

Keep in mind that I'm not arguing against a FOV slider - I just don't think it's the one and only cure-all for simulation sickness.

Other games.

My rl fov is approximately 70 degrees to begin with so that might be it.

My left eye doesnt work.

From what I understand though you wouldnt be able to see much in peripheral view without turning your head slightly. You cant see to the sides well without turning your eyes.

Constant eye movement and focus changing on a screen would nauseate me ><

The size of individual objects that you can see doesn't matter. While everything looks to be farther away with a wider FOV you also see more of the game world making it much more immersive. And when the FOV is set right everything looks to be exactly at the distance where it should be. No zoom.

I've noticed when I stop playing games that have a first person view like Skyrim and start playing again I also get a little disoriented. I have to change from 1st to 3rd person views quite a bit till I get use to it again.

i play strickly in first person and had no problem. I would like someone to show me the difference what a bigger field of view would do (because i got no knowledge of it). Had no problem doing pvp and pve in first person (trickier against nightblade)

I guess yeah, having a FoV slider would be good! like perhaps from 100 to 65 (where they are at now). I wished sometime i could see just a little bit more on the side, it felt like i was playing a bit with blinders (you know, what horse have on their heads) but still went with it because i prefer first person.

:shrug: To each his own, I guess. Just seems like the degree of first-person FOV you seem to be asking for would cause some weird distortions that I personally would find counter-immersive, but, hey, more power to ya.

Wow, the two part video in that skyrim FOV guide is the most lucid explanation of the issues that I've seen so far. The narrator explains it really really well. You just can't put a crappy console FOV on a PC game and expect it to work. I can't undersand why PC devs continue to make this same mistake over and over again. Zenimax, just give us a slider, 50-120+ degrees, and everyone's happy (and not vomiting).
