200 years later...

Post » Thu Aug 18, 2011 3:18 pm

First of all, im not talking about guns or cars or something stupid like that. Everyone with the least bit of knowledge knows that 200 years arent THAT much of a difference, technology-wise.

However, there must be a bit of advancement, I think/hope/guess.
I honestly cant think of anything, but thats why I made this topic. Did we get any information about that yet?

Yes, we now know some species have learned to catch fish with their hands and mine for ores.
I don't know, I doubt they've done anything to be honest.

Look at it this way. People used swords and shields and bows and old technology for thousands of years before the industrial revolution. Hell, during the black ages, technology actually regressed. So, it does make sense for the TES universe to advance very little during 200 years.

Fantasy realms tend to be rather timeless places. Centuries often pass without any or little advancement. You could argue that since the disappearence of the Dwemer things had regressed rather than advanced.

Even ignoring the part where fantasy & game worlds tend to have very slow development speeds, if any...

...it's been 200 years of stuff going wrong, as far as I was aware. Empire's going down hill, Morrowind exploded, civil war in Skyrim, etc. That's usually a recipe for a tumble into the dark ages, not technological improvement. :)

(I also suspect, from my lofty position of very little lore knowledge, that there's some anti-tech prejudice in the world, due to the Dwemer.)

edit: also, with Magic available to do a variety of things, there's less necessity to come up with mechanical/industrial ways to do things. For instance, easy access to magical healing means there's less need to figure out all the surgery/etc that we eventually stumbled our way onto.

we didn't have cars 200 years ago.... B.O.T. ........ no new tech, magic fills the void of technology...... unless you ask a dwemer

the dwemer were the only ones advancing technology, and look at where that got them... their entire race has vanished from existence.

seems whenever technology is about to pop up, everything goes to hell.

i think the rest of tamriel is just fine sticking with their swords and magic.

there really isnt any place for advanced technology in TES, anyway, i think...

To be honest in a world full of magic I am not sure technological advances would ever go very far. Why learn how to do open heart surgery if you could just drink a potion instead? I just can't think of a whole lot of the advances we have today that magic couldn't handle better. That being the case I think it makes perfect sense that technology stands still in this world.

Well im actually talking about smaller stuff, exploring new minerals, exploring more techniques in forging them, but also in other areas. Like architecture etc..
I also do not believe that Skyrim will be a dwemer-steampunk game, lol

Todd confirmed in a recent interview that mascara has finally been invented, but I'm afraid it's as far as it goes. Considering that even crossbows no longer exist (at least since Morrowind), I'm afraid technology in TES is more inclined to devolve than advance ._.

The Roman Empire have been using Balistas since Before Christ....After the Roman Empire falls Balistas resurface only in the 8th or 9th century....I think Tamriel was having something like that...

One must remember that Nirn has actual magic, therefore they simply have no need for certain technological advancements. We invented the combustion engine to power our vehicles, they have teleportation, huge walking bugs etc. We discovered antibiotics, they have 'Cure Disease' potions, alchemy and restoration spells.

Well, about giant bugs - not really an argument. We had horses and carriages that pretty much served the same purpose and now we drive cars and fly by planes. Having something that works has never really stopped humanity from trying to invent something that works even better (and is cheaper and more accessible) or just for the hell of it ^^

TES is more about taking advantage of magic than progressing up the tree of industry and technology.

I hope technology in TES will never advance, if it does I can't help but imagining Tamriel in a modern setting(Which will eventually happen if technology advances) and that would ruin TES for me completely.

200 years on Nirn isn't a very long time. Magic supplants any real technology advantages. Necessity is the mother of invention. However, if magic can solve most necessities, then the need to invent new technology to solve a problem becomes unnecessary.

technology didn't advance the way it would have on earth. Based on the architecture, clothing, and culture of Oblivion, I'd guess (and I'm no history buff) it took place in the equivalent of earth's 1300 or so... which would mean that 200 years later, you'd start seeing a lot of early guns and things of that sort... however, the Dwarves of the Elder Scrolls create a glaring problem, because they've developed all sorts of steam powered machines. Not only was the steam engine not invented until several hundred after the 1300s, but the dwarves built things that would even today be nearly impossible to make, like the dwarven centurions, etc.. The point is that TES exists in a fantasy world, not earth.

At the end of the day, it doesn't even make sense for technology to develop in TES the same way it did on earth, because the presence of magic makes a lot of technology redundant. For instance, why go through the trouble to invent and build train tracks and trains to travel long distances, when you can just go the Mage's guild and teleport for much cheaper?

In under 100 years we went from first having a t.v. to now having game's like we do now. A lot can happen in 200 years.

Instead of forking over your life savings to go to a rip off hospital who may or may not heal you, but could possibly kill you instead with false meds, you could go to a healer at a chapel or learn restoration yourself.

this is a question that can't be answered with just a yes or no without being given context of what happened in these 200 years.
new technologies may have been developed as well as technologies that were present before but have now ceased to be, and of what source would these technologies stem from? magic, mechanic or organic? there are quite a few factors that don't let me give you an adequate answer but if i had to guess i'd say that technology based on magic could have been improved while mechanical technology has regressed.
