2012 is close!

This thread svcks. Only a few people in this thread think something is going to happen, but every one else is spreading their own brand of ignorance.

Welcome to the party! What's your brand?

Hate to break it to you, but species don't have "cycles" where they jump along on "evolutionary levels," that result in sudden changes to their forms. Evolution is one of the slowest processes that takes place in biology. Evolution is little more than the traits that made one animal in a species have a better chance to breed over others getting passed onto the next generation, with these traits accumulating over countless generations until the difference is notable enough that the current generation can be considered distinct from its ancient ancestors. Humanity isn't going to suddenly develop some telepathic hive mind or whatever, what humans are going to do is keep on existing. The only thing that occurs at a decent rate is human cultural evolution, the evolution of human knowledge and society. Our collective knowledge and our society changes and improves incredibly fast, but our genetics are changing at the same old, slow rate. Make no mistake, evolution is so incredibly damn slow, we wouldn't see visible changes in ten human lifetimes.

Actually... Evolution can occur rapidly, but only under extreme circumstances, and so long the population has a "stable" population, capable of having a high mutation rate, and/or capable of surviving in a variety of environments.

For instance, in Russia, a new breed of domesticated fox was created within 60 years as an experement; these foxes look and act more like dogs than foxes. Of course, this is man-fueled evolution (extreme circumstances) using a species of the canid family (which are all capable of having a high mutation rate.)

However, I'm with you about 2012 being the date of sudden human evolution- the circumstances (so far as we can tell) are not extreme enough to warrent such immedate changes. The only thing that could fuel sudden evolution would be if global society completely broke down within a year- high famine rates, no power, etc. Basically, post-apocalypse or something of similar magnitude. And even then, it would take a few human generations before we would see anything distinct; our kids would basically still be "us," but our great-great-great grandkids may not. And that's assuming that Human Society does not make a concentrated attempt to "try and rebuild."

ancient civilizations used to think that the "end of the world" was a reason for celebration instead of a reason for panic. They actually "destroyed" their own world many times in a more symbolic way. It was actually an easy way for them to get rid of something they hated. For example if an artist used to be out if inspiration they re-enacted the origin of the world -> destroying their old world [like 2012 will] so they could start all over in a new world with, in this case, new inspiration. Same for curing illness, in order for a medicine to work you had to know the origin of the medicine, which usually leaded to the origin of the world. Which also means, destroying the old world to cure the "old disease" to heal the patient. And other than that...the calender is most likely going to end in 2012 but I guess it'll just start over at 0 on jan 1st 2013. And yeah...most likely the world is going to be destroyed by nature disasters and asteroids as well...but we all gon die sooner or later....

2012....oooooh 2012. Well, it depends on what you really believe in. In many times in the past, Christians, Catholics, Muslims, and Hindus alike have all said the apocalypse was coming, on a certain day, with certain events harboring in the end. Now, this has always been the way it is. The new pope was signaled as the Anti-Christ, Obama is thought to be a Satan-worshiping Zionist, the twin towers falling are to represent some sort of twin stars falling in the bible, etc etc. In the end, we're all the creators of our own uncertainties. Perhaps our minds are the bringers of the end. But as for 2012...there are some things that may or may not harp a change of equivalence. If you know about it, like REALLY know about it; there are a few Mayan calendars that actually pass the 12/12/12 mark. Mainly one in the eastern part of the old kingdom. It goes up into actually 2032. Which is by all means a LARGE stretch of doomsday. But WHAT, then, is the actual thought of happening in 2012? Well, the apocalypse for Mayans is depicted as a dragon from the heavens coming down and flooding the world. This can easily be interpreted many many ways. Some say it'll be a time of turmoil, testing the limits and strength of humanity as a whole. Some say it is going to be a time of sudden ascension of the human mind, of conscientiousness, Others believe it will be a normal day. Some, they think it is the end of the world, of humans, of time, of space.

Me? I have a different view, one that has been unfolding in front of our very eyes, senseless to us, for the past centuries. I can't explain it, due to the pressing tides of free thinking on these boards, but I will just say that I'm surely keeping on my guard, and not listening to one word of 'news' that comes from the press.

It's probably gonna go down as prelude to Kilroy was Here. And then Dennis and Tommy will save us all.

You know people die every day, somebody's world will end on December 21st, 2012. It might just be mine, or yours.

As for this Nibiru / Mayan / whatever theory, NO.

Love this part of the argument...

In his book, The Invisible Landscape, McKenna merged the I-Ching and insights from psychadelic drug experences...

Yep, nothing unscientific there.

I actually want something drastic to happen. Everyday life has gotten so routinely and mundane that I actually want to experience change!

I call dibs on being a Mr. Roboto.

But they're all Robotos! You get to be a servile robot that Dennis sings about! It'll rock! Until he kills you, disembowls you, and wears your hollow shell as a suit.

I can't make this up, folk. Styx is hardcoe.

OK, instead I'll wear a Mr. Roboto on Halloween, 2012, in honor of Verlox!

Not gonna happen, back when Y2K was the popular apocalypse my uncle knew this guy from the post office. He had quit his job and spent all his money on a lavish 6 month vacation in hawaii. When Y2K didn't happen, he couldn't get his job back. svcks to be him, eh.

What the Mayans predicted was most likely a galactic calendar and that Dec 2012 is the end of a galactic cycle. And AFAIK, the Mayans knew that [censored] of the stars better than ANYONE anywhere

Edit: Typo :swear:

Nothing will happen. If something does happen in 2012, then we will be dead and people who believe in that will not be able to brag. If nothing happens like I think, then I look smart. Win win for me.

I probably bet its mention already but the Mayans didn't predict anything like the end of the world. The only thing that would happen is a handful of people going crazy with that "we are all going to die!!!" mentality.

Well, that's a fact, no need to go crazy over it. You're gonna die someday whether you freak out or not, might as well relax.

Oh ho ho, I am quite aware of that. Could be within a pasting minute or 80 years from now, but I hope its quick and painless.

The only way the Mayan prophecy will come true is if it becomes a self-for filling prophecy.

In layman's terms, that means it will only happen if somehow some loon makes it happen because he heard of the prophecy and believed it.

How funny would it be if Rohugh banned every member of this forum for 24 hours new years eve of 2012?

I wouldnt see the funny side -- since on new years eve I'll be out celebrating, not sat on the forums :) so I wouldnt even notice.

I wouldnt mind if the world ended in 2012 -- it means my real estate venture on mars wasnt a waste. Call me Mr Wong.
