Nothing will happen until 100 years after 2012. In 2112 a man will discover a guitar in a cave and bring it to the priests of the temple of Syrinx. They will smash his guitar and send him away, where he will dream of a better world and then kill himself.

"WE ARE THE PRIESTS, OF THE TEMPLE OF SYRINX"

:P

Seriously though?

I believe the only people to die on 2012 will be the one's who commit mass suicide out of fear, or god knows what reason.

Apparently, calendars of many civilizations (including Mayans among others) end at 2012. Some people say we are all going to die, others say it's the end of the whole world, while different people think it's going to be like an Ice Age, something like new era or a new page for the world for people who live. Also many think that these major weather changes are related to it, since it's close, obviously. Also, the main prediction is that the world will be enlightened by the shade of green!

Your thoughts?

Actually, only the Mayans predicted the 2012 thing- other pseudo-religions (i.e. cults) have taken it up as well.

Furthermore, we have Mayan tablets that predict dates to something like 9050 AD- it's that theyre so rare that they're almost unheard of. What's important about 2012 is that the Mayan Calander is like an old odometer- a new age will occur because the Mayan Calander goes from "12/12/12/12" to "0/0/0/1" (the mayans used a base 12 counting system, not a base 10 like we do.)

Basically, a new age will begin- according to the Mayans.

But still... I'm getting a gun in 2011. Better safe than sorry.

Pfft...they probably http://www.dailyfunnystuff.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Mayan-Calendar.jpg

The world won't end in 2012, hundreds of supposed doomsdays have come and gone, and this one will be no different.

It's a little-known secret that most calendars end on a yearly basis.

Its ok, I have a plan, we are gonna build a bigger calender out of a larger rock and save the day

And then we'll build it so that it appears to end in 4012! Scholars of the year 4000, ignorant of our ingenious plot to avoid our own doomsday, will interpret our calendar as ending, and will assume it means the end of days, where the world shall be engulfed in Marshmallow Peeps. So it was written, so it shall be.

So let me get this straight. The Mayan calender ends so that means the end of the world? I find it funny, how our calender, the one we use January to December ends, but the world dosn't end when it's finished.

Actually, calendars in Asia were found from the close age to Mayans, that also end at the same or close date and some of them predicted some catastrophic events. How would people explain that? Mayans and Asians had no relations at that point. Actually, if I remember correctly, same were found somewhere in Africa too.

When have people not been predicting catastrophe?

I find the notion that ancient cultures who looked up at the stars for ungodly amounts of time were able to master astronomy to such a massive degree that they could predict our doomsday thousands of years before any reputable modern scientist could to be... very reasonable! Now if you'll excuse me I have to go back to banging my head against the wall to get rid of the government planted nanobots in my brain. :)

My thoughts: I say we destroy the world in 2011 to prove those damn Mayans wrong

*Raises hand* Gets my vote here stupid Mayans thinking the know everything bunch of hacks *spits*

*Serious*

From Nostrodamus to the Mayans to our current plethora of weirdos there have always been doom sayers predicting the end of the world. Everyone thought that 2000 would be the end of the world with the Y2K bug and ICBMs launching nuking everything in sight leaving nothing but a wasteland. Personally i'm thinking something similar will happen in 2012 where we'll see this like new thing start creeping up and people will be scared [censored] huddling in their bunkers. I'll just be sitting in my chair, at my computer and drinking a Pepsi while I watch the world count down to supposed oblivion.

Course in the event something does happen i've got a knife, baseball bat, and a bottle of jack ready for action.

All of the reasons believers in this "prophecy" (I say prophecy because the Mayans didn't predict anything except having to make a new calendar)

It gets even less impressive when you take into account that the Mayan calendar is perfectly usable for another couple of thousand years (I work it out to 23rd24th June 4378 before they would even have to add another digit to the date)

Edit: Counted one too many blasted leap years

20 based numerical system, astronomical literacy, thus calenders were created to mark the passage of time.
That is all. No end of the world, no calamity, none of that nonsense.

1. We all most certainly will die (eventually). but not all in 2012.

2. Nothing has never happened yet.

3. We will not be able to move to the moon by 2012. If we are lucky, we might have a small lunar base. if that.

4. In terms of pure numbers, the rats and bugs already are the dominant species. Humans are a relatively small (in numbers) species, and we are the main predators of rats or bugs, in fact, both enjoy much larger populations due to humans, without humans their main food sources would go away.
