2012 is close!

Post » Fri Jul 30, 2010 2:14 am

Apparently, calendars of many civilizations (including Mayans among others) end at 2012. Some people say we are all going to die, others say it's the end of the whole world, while different people think it's going to be like an Ice Age, something like new era or a new page for the world for people who live. Also many think that these major weather changes are related to it, since it's close, obviously. Also, the main prediction is that the world will be enlightened by the shade of green!

Your thoughts?

Actually, I think Rohugh will destroy us all before 2012. He'll beat the sun in a staring contest.

The world's people suffer a collective heart attack from the growing bacon obsession. It has been foretold.

Naysayers will be deep fried and served with a side of potatoes.

The only people that are going to die are those killing themselves out of fear of the whole 2012 nonsense...

Shame, really.

Nothing will happen until 100 years after 2012. In 2112 a man will discover a guitar in a cave and bring it to the priests of the temple of Syrinx. They will smash his guitar and send him away, where he will dream of a better world and then kill himself.

All of the reasons believers in this "prophecy" (I say prophecy because the Mayans didn't predict anything except having to make a new calendar) have come up with for how we will be destroyed have been either ruled out or deemed ridiculous by scientists. Even NASA went and spoke out against some of them. 2012 will be another Y2K except in 2012 we will have something we didn't have back in the year 2000, a word to describe the massive level of fail that will take place with nothing happens. That magic word is "epic facepalm."

Though, I must admit that I do find the alternative date given for "doomsday" (December 23rd instead of the 21st) to be hilariously demented. If the world does end in 2012, I sincerely hope it is on the 23rd. After the 21st and 22nd go by without any incident, the 23rd comes and boom, the chipmunks of the world initiate their long planned rebellion. That will be a glorious day for our future rulers, a glorious day indeed.

The Mayans did not predict the end of the world in 2012. In fact, they predicted events much AFTER 2012.

Its just a tick over on the metaphorical oddometer. No more magical than the change from 1999 to 2000.
Scholars from various disciplines have dismissed the idea that a catastrophe will happen in 2012. Mainstream Mayanist scholars state that predictions of impending doom are not found in any of the existing classic Maya accounts, and that the idea that the Long Count calendar "ends" in 2012 misrepresents Maya history.[3][5] The modern Maya, on the whole, have not attached much significance to the date, and the classical sources on the subject are scarce and contradictory, suggesting that there was little if any universal agreement among them about what, if anything, the date might mean.[6]

Its seems, not even the real Mayans care about it - so why should we?

I gotta go with this one, doom is inevitable. Just keep a clean pair of undies on you on new year's.

I we're all gonna die, then what does it matter whether we wear clean undies or not, we'll all be dead so it won't matter, right???

seriously though, mankind has been predicting it's doom since... well it's been forever. One of these days they (the doomsayers) may be right then look at you and say, " See, we were right all along, we told you it was going to happen." Oh wait, we'll be dead by then so...umm....nevermind.
