2560x1440 WIndowed Mode?

Post » Tue Mar 10, 2015 9:38 pm

Skyrim runs great on my PC. My issue is that my native res is 2560x1440 and every time I go to click on an app on my other monitor, Skyrim minimizes. I know windowed mode prevents this but when I look at the drop down the highest res for windowed mode is 1920x1080.

Anyone have any thoughts how to resolve this? Honestly I don't care if it is windowed mode or not, I would just like the ability to click on another app and have the game not minimize.

Thanks in advance.

You'll have to manually specify the resolution.

Navigate to: My Documents\My Games\Skyrim\SkyrimPrefs.ini

Find the following under [Display]

bFull Screen=1iSize H=xxxxiSize W=xxxx

Set, bFull Screen to 0, iSize H to 1440, iSize W to 2560 and save the file. Do not modify the resolution in the launcher, or you'll override the changes.

The game still minimizes when I click on another app.

I set the following in the SkyrimPrefs.ini file:

bFull Screen=0
iSize H=1440
iSize W=2560

The resolution in the launcher was set to 2560x1440 with windowed mode unchecked, prior to and after I modified the file. Should I select windowed mode and then try again? I know this means the higest res I can select is 1920x1080. Should I be trying anything else?

Not that it should matter but I found my SkyrimPrefs.ini file here: F:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim

You need to modify the one in the My Documents folder, not the Steam install folder.

Once you modify the file DON'T modify the settings with the launcher because it will revert the SkyrimPrefs.ini settings. The launcher may show inaccurate settings.

Hold Alt and press Tab, should allow you to use another application without minimizing Skyrim. Skyrim will lose focus and may 'pause' and may go to the background, but won't be minimized.

Thanks for trying to help me but unfortunately when I search on my PC for that file, the only location I am finding it is in the Steam install folder. In fact I do not nave a Skyrim folder under My Documents. Maybe I should uninstall and reinstall?

What operating system do you have?

And its My Documents \ My Games \ Skyrim.

By default the Windows search feature, only searches indexed locations. You'll have to select the: 'search again in Computer' or similar option, for it to actually search all folders.

Although now it has a border around the window, is there any fix for that?

There is a mod that removes the border in windowed mode.

Downloaded that one as well as the Double Cursor mod 36125, at the same nexus mod site. I don't have permissions to link to it, guessing it is a post count before you can post links etc.

Those two, combined with the prior advice with modifying the .ini file under Documents, worked exactly as I had hoped.

I can now run in native 2560x1440, no minimize issues or border around the game.

You all are awesome. Thanks again for the fast and helpful responses!!!!

First time playing Skyrim and I am going for the Paladin type role, but I see many other options I want to try, great game.

I'm glad everything worked out.. BTW: The posting links thing is related to your post count and registration date.
