So I was looking through my in game stats and somehow I have over 300 locations discovered. I am pretty sure there is no where near that many in the game. Is it a glitch with the locations discovered stat?

There are many meaningless Locations. It could be 300 but only the half of them are worth.
This actually reminds me of the standing stone stat glitch from skyrim.. It looks like it made its way to fallout 4
The Prima guide lists c.250 main locations which generate map icons,
a few others clearly 'count' as locations...
I'm guessing it doesn't include unmarked locations?
"300+ locations discovered"
and not a single Starbucks among them. Ain't the post nuclear war wasteland wonderful?
I am pretty sure, that the actual number is closer to 350 in total. Some locations, will count as two locations for example (like when you enter a certain school which counts as one location, only to find a vault underneath it, counting as another location) Some locations are only discovered through faction quests, like the RR Mercer Safehouse.
Then there is a huge number of unmarked locations. Everything from apartments mini-dungeons, to the scary parking labyrinth.
On my current playthrough, I am level 62. I haven't touched the main quest yet, and only done RR quests. I have 277 discovered locations so far.
Ok, so I figured out what is adding extra locations. The next time you get the "Map Updated" icon to appear on your screen look at your stats and you'll notice it added a +1 to your stats. Then travel to the location and actually find it and then you'll get another +1. So yeah I was right is definitely a stat glitch
Bleh, Starbuck's is overrated and their coffee svcks in my opinion. Glad they don't exist in the post-apocalyptic Commonwealth.
There are definatly 340-350 locations, they are listed on some websites, add to that probably 200 more unmarked.
well, I found 260 marked locations on my 1st playthrough with still portions of the map unexplored, 2nd playthrough I've found 160 so far, quite a lot of them I didn't find 1st char.

Marked and unmarked locations.
Count them....
Read post #10... Try it for yourself then tell me that the stat is not glitched
It's not the coffee i hate about them... it's the process i have to go through if i want a cup of simple black coffee.
One of my goals in my 3rd play-through is to find (get credit for) all the Icon Locations that the other two play-throughs missed. I printed out a list of what I call Icon Locations. It has about 320 locations.
I knew which locations Character A and Character B found, so I immediately checkmarked them off. The remaining locations were the responsibility of Character C, who has now completed the list. Unfortunately, there are about 20 listings that I could not find, nor could I find any info on them. Perhaps they were meant to be included in the game but were cut. I'll list a few of them below with spoiler tags, in case anyone knows anything about them. I'd love to find them!
Character C also found a location that is listed on the list but didn't get a "discovery" nor does it have a name attached, like most unmarked locations. It's a real-life place and I know approximately where this place "should" be. The in-game building fits the description I'm familiar with.
In addition to the Icon Locations, the list has a section of about 35-40 unmarked locations. For example, it lists all the individual places within DC (I hope that's not a spoiler). Character C has, on her own, found at least 10 other unmarked locations that aren't on the unmarked list.
Long story short, based on my own explorations, I believe there are at least 325 Icon Locations and probably another 30-40 unmarked ones.
In the Boston area, you're way, way, WAY more likely to run across Dunkin Donuts than Starbucks. Pretty decent drip coffee there too.
