3drealms/duke nukem forever

Post » Mon Apr 27, 2009 10:50 pm

So, what are your guy's thoughts on the whole duke nukem forever and 3d realms shutting down deal? It kind of makes me a bit angry cause I've literally been waitng for the game since it was first announced.

Seriously, what 3d realms did is kind of a slap in the face to their fans.

I think this whole ordeal is much more shameful than the Daikatana deal. John romeo? has been dethroned...

I was pretty devistated by the news. I really considered that company one of the staples of the original PC Gamer market I grew up with. Right after I read the news, I pulled my very last Bawls out of the fridge and drank a tribute. Note to my neighbors, those rumblings you heard earlier was not an earthquake, I now have nuclear power.

It is a slap in the face after promising the game time and time again. But hell, shit happens.

The plus side? (Or perhaps the ironic side?) If anyone caught that montage of video footage which hit kotaku.com or those concept art/model art/level art that were posted on the artists blogs.

After doing the math in my head I'm now convinced that more content of the game has been released since 3d realms shut down than when they were making it. Now if they hadn't decided to make it this way, maybe more people would've cared about the project shutting down. Note to my neighbors, those rumblings you heard earlier was not an earthquake, I now have nuclear power.

I'm not quite sure about that... Remember Amen The awakening?

Though you could be right.. Duke Nukem has a huge following.

It took 12 years just to get this point. I cannot honestly say I'm surprised.

Looks like it's Duke Nukem Never now... A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
- Never destroying any highly acclaimed studios for profit
- Never ripping people off
- Never wasting people's time

Seriously, a new news post about DNF comes out like every two days. More news has been released since the game's cancellation than while it was in development. This game is just not dead.

Take 2 is demanding a court injunction to collect DNF's source code. They want it. With it, they could in theory finish the game, hell I think they should have it. I don't think it should be in 3dr's hands anymore, they just will never finish it if they're allowed to continue working on it. Put another team on it, and they'll probably have it done in less than a year. Note to my neighbors, those rumblings you heard earlier was not an earthquake, I now have nuclear power.

yea right now I wouldn't mind another team working on it. I just hope this thing gets done and released and has all that comedic feeling 3d nukem had when it came out.

There are pretty much no more FPS games that make you go HAHAHAHA over and over again.... Games are fun, but rarely funny and fun to play.

Very true. You know though the title is living up to itself. Duke Nukem Forever (aka Taking Forever). I know bad pun.

From reading up on DNF it seems that the problem with its development is "perfection". The team gets 90% done then says, ya know what we can make it better! All the data scrapped and thrown into the trash bin. Back to ground zero. I can understand with any artist (even as I a poet on the side) that perfection is always on their minds. To tweak something here and there and still ultimately never be happy with it. This is where 3D Realms should've just finished it. No taking a break and looking it over again, no continue til its ready to market.

Then I can see them looking back and tweaking a few things before the final product which would be a compromise with the team as a whole to say "its perfect for now". Because perfection itself is a carrot dangling in front of a horse. That horse will walk until it passes out to get that carrot. 3D Realms is the horse and it looks like they finally collapsed under the pressure. Image

Just to add some flair to this post. Anyone remember the rumors of an actual Duke Nukem movie? Oh that would've been awesome. Image

Anyone notice the DNF news has totally died?

I gurantee you right now as I type this 3D Realms and Take 2 are conducting secret clandestine negotiations over T2's lawsuit and are reaching towards some settlement. Hopefully that settlement ends with 3DR being forced to finally develop DNF on a time schedule so it'll get released eventually. The ****ed up thing that I read about from an ex-insider, was that the deal 3dRealms had with Epic's graphics engine was undermined by a select few in development team to basically create an endless development cycle. Apparently they would create a map, test it, and be ordered to start from scratch again endlessly. This went on with a lot of other stuff in the creative department according to the article I read.

Don't believe too much that you read. PC Gamer has a full two pages on the supposed DNF being gone forever. Though yes it looks pretty much the truth that it very well is, the thing is that the legal matters isn't settled yet. At least I've heard or seen nothing of it yet and 3D Realms website and DNF Forums are still up and running. So I'm not going to count them out until I actually see the empty shell of a once thriving company.

P.S. I even questioned PC Gamer as they tried to mention that the 3D Realms website made mention that DNF is gone by posting "goodbye" on their site (also to indicate their closure). Yet anyone can to the website and see this is far from truth. Hopefully I'll get an answer from PC Gamer, maybe they know something that we don't. Image

To hell with waiting for DNF, there's always the Duke Nukem 3D (Atomic) High-Resolution Pack! The thing that annoys me about playing Duke3D again in native Win Vista in high resolution is that you can't use mouse movement to look up and down, like in all standard modern 3D shooters. Bad input design on the original developers, I guess... ;)

Check the settings, if you changed the original layout you may have accidentally changed your aim to work with the keyboard plus mouse which will mean your mouse will jump right back to the center when trying to look up or down since its not detecting the key press (I made this mistake before in other games). Also check for any other options that deal with the aim feature such as "spring back" which originally is suppose to allow Duke to aim and fire from above or below but if a fellow ground level comes out of nowhere chewing you a new one you could just let the mouse instantly center itself for a quick execution.

Just some thoughts I'm kicking around in my head.. Image

Duke Nukem was a legend. Apogee (and then 3d Realms) made great games that didn't necessarily have fantastic graphics. I might be dating myself, but I had alot of fun playing Jill of the Jungle... it was just a simplestic side-scroller. I think Duke Nukem Forever failed to come to market due to some feeling of perfectionism or desire to be cutting edge. Just need to make a game that is fun.
