3DS Generic Units - Uneven measurements

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:26 pm

Hi

I just have a question, in 3ds max, using any tileset, but lets look at Ayleid Ruins. Any of the floor dimensions are all the same but not in X. How do they tile correctly when turning them 90degrees. Or more importantly is can i just make them (Generic Units >> American) at 512 for X and 512 for Y and not run into problems or should i copy the same dimensions gamesas have used? Details below of the pieces i checked out in max, could my scale be out in max for X?

Tested piece below, at different measurements(right clicking >> gives object properties for the size dimensions)
Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Dungeons\AyleidRuins\Interior\arpitfloor01.nif

Metric >> Centimeters
X = 1300.46cm
Y = 1300.481cm

US Standard >> Feet w/Decimal Inches
X = 42'7.992" Feet
Y = 42'8.0" Feet

Generic Units >> American
X = 511.992 <<-- What happened here?
Y = 512 <<-- Looks good

Other pieces checked, all with the exact same dimension

That was a mistake made by Bethesda, you should use exactly 512x512. The difference is so tiny (0.008 units is as thin as a hair on your characters head) that you don't see it in game, especially with low ambient lighting. If you look in the CS though with full bright lighting on you will see lots of tiny gaps between Bethesda tiles. Actually you can't avoid extremely tiny gaps since the nifs only show coordinates up the fourth decimal place. If you set your coordinates to six decimal places in max you will notice that the y position of the outer vertex is not 256 but 256.000061. You will never notice tiny gaps like that unless you have a glowing background. Like lava as a water type for example - you will see little red dots at the tile edges if lava is glowing directly below them. Becomes worse if AA is off.

But it's nothing to worry about under normal circumstances. Just try to place your vertices correctly up to fourth decimal place (256.0000 for example).

Oh thank you Phitt

I thought my X might be out, i had trouble with max a few days ago with the material browser loosing the shapes you look at and with them all being black with stripes of white lines in each material object. But it fixed itself up after the 3rd restart, all happened by using a custom shape though this tutorial to replace the circle in the material browser :(
