3ds max importexport causes weird texture problem? :(

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 1:20 am

I don't know what I'm doing, let's establish that. The only thing I did was import dremora horns, import Corean hair, then put one on top of the other. It works in game. The problem is this: http://i.imgur.com/L0ZPj.jpg

The right image is the original, the left is the exported nif with the horns added. It totally messes up the texture on the tips of the hair and I don't know why. Any ideas if I can fix this while being a complete layperson?

Wouldn't have happened with Blender! ;) Rightclick on hair in NifSkope, Node->Attach Property->NiAlphaProperty

Blender doesn't work for me unfortunately. I've tried to get other people who know more about this stuff to help and they have the same issue. It wants me to get Python, Python Tools (forget the name of it), etc, and when I've downloaded everything it still doesn't recognize the Blender installation. So I gave up and had to get max. :/ Trust me, I'd love to use Blender.

But OMG it totally worked. Why are people on this forum so smart and helpful? It's unreal.

My humble advice: do not mess up with hair in Max or Blender (Blender does not have any advantage in this respect). Create your model with horns and hair in Max, export, and than copy only horns in the orginal working hair nif using NifScope. Overlapping alpha often occuring in hair models requires application of certain mesh modeling tricks (this is a peculiarity of Gambryo renderer):

Only few modders know how to create such meshes, e.g. Ren.

On that note, since you are a wizard and know a ton about this stuff.. I got this far http://i.imgur.com/yuBSN.jpg and went to test it in game (untextured but w/e) and it crashes. This is a horn mesh used in an Oblivion mod found here (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=40723) originally done by AlienSlof I think. I'm trying to attach it to Corean hair. Is there anything I can do to make this work? I don't know why it doesn't but I would love to have it.

edit - I use 3dsMax cuz I can't get Blender to work.

I'm trying to convert the Oblivion horns.nif to Morrowind. I saw a tutorial on how to "downgrade" a weapon (and the guy said it could be used for any Oblivion object) but it only involved deleting the Oblivion collision box and re-pathing the texture in Nifskope. So I have no idea and the tutorial did not help.

YAYAYAY I got it!! http://i.imgur.com/Fjk7M.jpg :D! Thanks guys!

Uninstall any debris from previous attempts to install Blender and install the combination contained in the download

Change the record DayWalker..... ok, we all get that you make good stuff in crap software, we get it.

It's not program specific at all. You just have to set the alpha properties right in the material you are using for the hair.

Meldiocre, if you look in the material editor in Max, you just need to set the http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22925394/Morrowind/Alpha%20Settings.jpg, then on export it will work fine. Obviously you can tweak these to suit what youre after.

Nice tutorial! I was always wondering what was ment by sorting the render order of hair meshes. In fact it is pretty straight forward. Works fine in Blender as well, already tested it.

It is great that you are able figure out how to apply this trick for other hair models. These overlapping alphas were always a problem for complex MW hair nifs.

I have cleaned my inbox, thank you.

I don't think AlienSlof would be pleased to see her work used thus. She refuses female-only conversions.

Alienslof refuses to do them, but as long as meldiocre doesn't re-distribute anything belonging to Alienslof, she can do anything she pleases with it on her own computer for her own enjoyment.

I have bad news for her, then, since this is where I got the horns from: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=40723

Regardless, it's like Elaura said. I haven't released this race and I don't plan to. It has a unique nerdlore backstory that I concocted myself and it's purely for my own immersion. And also I like facial piercings, they rock. (On other people.)

edit: The more I think about this, the more I wonder. Why does Slof feel this way?

I don't recommend wasting any time talking here about it. You might be able to get a response from her through a PM at Wolflore, but then again, Slof may just rather not re-open that wound.

As it is, if you aren't using any of Slof's resources and you can get permission from the mod authors whose work is in use, there is no reason not to release them. I'm sure others would greatly enjoy this.

Personal reasons. You'll have to contact her if you want the whole story. As for your horns, they look great. :D

Actually I think I found out why by reading about it on Slof's Hive. I see her point, completely. I've seen some of the mods on certain sites and it's kind of appalling. And thanks for the compliment, Jac. I actually redid them a little bit cause they were overpowering her head, then made her hair dark in the back and light in the front, redid the eyes and lips, and added my favorite necklace from a mod of Oblivion: http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/1769/mgescreenshot021.png

Elaura, did you mean I should release this race? Or what are you saying? Sorry, I woke up a little while ago. x.x

PS - I know her bra has no straps, I can't for the life of me figure out how to make that happen. It curves so weirdly around the collarbone. >_<

Yes, if you have permission from the original modders to re-distribute the resources, then yes, you should release it. I may not play it, but it might be neat to have a few non-standard races running around. As long as the clothing fits, I could add some NPCs to my game.

I wish I knew how to do that!!! I have this nerdy fantasy of having like a remote castle somewhere with members of my race in it, and like their queen or something. And my character could go there and get lectured for not being an upstanding member of that race and going off and having adventures and stuff. :x Kind of lame I know but I really would enjoy having that.

But if you really would like NPCs of this, I will go about trying to get permissions. The clothing should fit, right? It uses BB. This necklace is attached to her head and thus has clipping issues but I could of course make heads that don't involve the necklace. *ponder*

Good point. Maybe I'll rethink that if I ever release it.. You have to realize this is just something my imagination did, it's not on paper anywhere or anything. :P (God I am addicted to this forum now. Not going to get any work done ever.)
