3rd Person Cam In Skyrim

Post » Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:54 am

So how should it be like? Would you like a Gears/Resident Evil-style cam or the fable ones? I, personally, would love to see gears-type camera bobbing with the ability to move the camera with the right thumbstick and move the character with the left (like in fable) and perhaps finishes could have the camera set to a position where you can see the full action kinda like manhunt's executions or gears's curb stomp. And please no flaming! I'm new to the forums and my English isn't very good (sadly to say) but I digress. So how do you feel the cam angle should be like? (Sorry if there are threads about this already) Peace.

Other.

I know they have made changes to third person. I want the one they have now, it's probably good. :P

I'd honestly prefer if it was something like Fable/Zelda/whatever else, where your character doesn't always face the direction the camera's facing in third person and where they attack in the direction that they're looking rather than in the direction that the camera's looking. That's been the standard for third-person action games (outside of shooters) for a pretty long time. Looks like we're going to be getting an over-the-shoulder view with Skyrim if Pete Hines' Twitter is any indication, though.

EDIT:
I know they have made changes to third person. I want the one they have now, it's probably good.

Given Bethesda's track record, I wouldn't be optimistic. They've said that they'd made major improvements and fixed it several times, and it's never been true.

I always play in first person, and I'll continue to do that unless they do something really good to 3p or something really wrong to the 1p.

Well from the screen shots in the recent GI at least, once can tell that the 3rd person is identical to FO3's style. The character is slightly off-centered to the left so the player has a greater view of objects in front of him. Generally I always use 1st person (mainly because 3rd was always sub-standard in previous TES games), but it's nice to see one's character from time to time and notice the actual character progression. If BGS is able to pull off a new compelling 3rd person system, it may be even fun to do in combat.

I agree they need to implement a free roaming 3rd person camera that you can swing around the character without it affecting the character's animated direction of focus or attack. I played a strong mix of both views in Oblivion(even worked the bow and ranged spells from 3rd person pretty accurately and had a lot of fun doing it). I would always place the camera at a point close to the body, to tighten the view, but one thing that always irked me was the way you had to swing the camera upwards to an awkwardly annoying angle to attack any enemy that was low to the ground(rats, crabs, wolves, etc.) IT just looked silly. So I think whatever they decide to do, first and foremost they need to stop making the camera view and the charcter's focus interdependant on one another.

It should be like GTA with a "z targeting" system like zelda which activates a fallout 3 type mode complete with crosshair. Not a lock-on. Just a camera lock.
Kind of like how you could do it in morrowind with the white button on x-box. Except reverse and better.

The only problems i can see (aside from the inherent flaws of the fallout style) is making it so the turn speed in 3rd person matches the turn speed of 1st person.

This poll needs an 'I don't care, I only use first person,' option. That would be my vote.

I never played Gears of War and played so little of Fable that I don't recall what that was like besides it having terrible linear maps of annoyance... so I didn't vote. Older games had better 3rd person than Bethesda has implemented in Morowind and Oblivion... heck,Heretic II had better 3rd person and that was ages ago. The whole 3rd person thing isn't new... its been perfected... so shouldn't be a problem for them to get right. It's not rocket science... :P

Also the player animations need much more love this time.

GTA/RDR did a good job with 3rd person. I could imagine weilding a sword in a game like that.

Thought the 3rd person in fallout 3 was totally broken, if they use that, because it's an 'improvement', then 1st person it is.

I asked Pete Hines on twitter if it was over the shoulder and he said yep.
Here's the exact question and his answer:

@DCDeacon The GI screens suggest an over the shoulder 3rd person camera for Skyrim! Is this the case? Would be awesome

@charlesadamst Yup, 3rd person view def looks improved

Something that doesn't make you use your head as a crosshair for ranged combat.

I hope its usable, I prefer playing in third-person in the last game It was awful. Just make it so people who want to use it are actually able to use it lol they might as well not have had in the last game xD

Third person has never felt accurate enough in a game as complex as TES. Unless is is drastically improved, I doubt I will ever use it beyond occasionally looking at my character.
