3rd person running animation bad?

Post » Wed Mar 19, 2014 4:12 am

just try 'walking'! SHEEEEESH, looks like your tryin' to keep the turtles head back in the cave. It's not just bad, it's embarrassing.

Between poorly implented group phasing, these basic animations are just mind numbingly poor. How does this basic stuff get past the first inhouse dev person who sees it?

Oh, and why can't we sit down on all the chairs/benches in the world?

Sorry to rag on the game as all other stuff I encountered during my 1 beta weekend seemed just fabulous and lovely. Had a lot of fun and look forward to release despite the gripes.

It's an elder scrolls game, hilariously bad animations that never went beyond playstation 1 era of complexity are pretty much a feature of the series.

It its ok to look like you have a corn cob stuck up somewhere while you are running then the animations are great lol. Ya they are annoying to me as hell.

I think Rift, SWTOR, Neverwinter, WoW are bad. ESO seems fine.

I've played Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, so not a 'true' vet (though Morrowind was what, 2003? So that's a good 11 years replaying TES), and plenty of MMO's. Never have I seen such poor, poor facepalming walking animations. Tis a shame cos I wanted to walk where you'd expect to see a person walking, and only run in the wilderness.

I'm not debasing myself to mincing around the god-damned marketplace.

Played Rift. Didn't have the same UGGHGHG reaction. Maybe because its my most anticipated game of the last few years my expectations are running really high and I'm overtly critical.

Still, report card from Wolfskald reads ' ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT'.

My one piece of creative feedback would be that the player looks like they are leaning too far foward when running. Typically, this drastic animation style is done in cartoons to really draw emphasis on body motion and the weight at which the person carries themself.

Because the TESO looks real enough, I don't think such drastic character animation is necessary but at the same time, I think it's far from looking bad.

The female running on the other hand! :P

Been MMO-ing since day one of Everquest over 15 years ago. I've been playing video games since my parents bought the first atari system that sat used in our basemant (Missile Command. Epic). The movement animations seem absolutely fine to me. I like the fact that the females don't look like they are walking a runway at a strip club, personally.

Baffles me when people cite development length and cost numbers for this game and what we get.

Well, I can rest assured at least one person won't laugh at me as I 'walk' carefully through the town, trying to not to burst into a sprint run for the nearest bucket or asking if anyone has a diaper spare...

This is sadly, quite accurate. When I played Skyrim I couldn't believe how poor the 3rd person animations looked. Thought they would have learned something for ESO... ah well.

LOL, that's awesome. Thank you for the time it took to find and link that :) Didn't see the guy walking though I get your point. What I don't get is why they don't use some assets from Skyrim, or at least try to improve on what's been done (poorly) in the past.

Anyway, thanks for that link, brought back memories..... !

Been MMO-ing since day one of Ultima Online over 15 years ago. I've been playing video games since my parents bought the first atari system that sat used in our basemant (Asteroids. Epic). The movement animations seem absolutely brutal to me.

+1

It's very bad tbh. lol

It isn't bad when you are sprinting or running with an unholsted weapon.

But it looks very weird when you are just running. It looks like a robot. lol

The thread topic was running, not walking.

Saw some walking here. Nothing earth-sharttering but nothing stood out to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFKpMSNsv_I

Yeah.

Skyrim was like an Olympic Power Walk:

Now it's a robot.

They didn′t allow us to sit in the world chairs, but they had the audacity to add a /sitchair command.

Makes one wonder...

Considering 2014 and animations in not so long ago released games, ESO could do better for sure. But TES games don't shine with art and graphics(without adds) and over all it is not as bad as you name it, if you ask me.

Ahh, I did not know that dude. Thanks for the tip.

Well, the thread topic was just a prelude to my gripe. ;)

Yeah, I saw NPC's walking about and they seemed fine. Just my own 3rd person view didn't look like that. Or at least didn't appear to me to look like that.

Anyway, subtleness aside, the walking and running animations (at least for Nord Males) could do with some work. I'm a great, hulking Nordic champion. I want to move with someone who has power, grace and bearing. The current animations do not convey this.

Am I wrong?!

I keep reading threads like this, but I never saw anything wrong with any of the animations whenever I played. They all looked great to me.

I hate animations in this game. One hand weapons are horrible. ZOS have to do it more fluid.
