3rd Person in Skyrim.

How do you think 3rd person should work in Skyrim?

For me I always prefer to play in 3rd person, but in past games it was hard to do things like combat and such while in it.

In previous games I have only used it to see how my character looks in his armor, as it almost seemed useless in all forms of combat and looting. I wouldn't mind it it didn't recieve some attention but it would be nice to see.

The only time I've ever seen third person swordplay done well required you to lock on to a target, like in Zelda games. Otherwise it's just too awkward.

... And Gothic

3rd person in TES is sloppy at best, but it's an "I" perspective game which If "I" recall from literature study is a method narrating a story "through the eyes".

"I" guess my point is, long story to be short, "I" don't really give a hairy rats ass what 3rd perspective looks like in game play.

imo, they should seperate 3rd person into two cameras

- they should have a 'vanity' camera which behaves much like the 360 view of the previous games

and

- an over the shoulder camera, much like gears of war, or assassins creed, that had a cross-hair so you could accurately direct attacks

I used 3rd person a bit in my gameplays mostly for sight seeing and the vanity camera. (Or to cheat and see an oncoming enemy)

I think its fine the way it is actually. Some times it got awkward in a compact area but thats about it.

that is precisely why alot of people including me went nuts on the deus ex forums when they let you see around hallway corners in third person mode in the new game. thankfully it appears that the covers system is entirely optional so we wont e forced to "cheat"

i use the vanity camera to check out any new items but thats about it. once ive seen my gear and im happy with it i never use it again. what i DO want to see are my legs and torso when im looking down. games like dark messiah and even the indie developer behind warband let you see your body. bethesda really doesnt have any excuse.

For me one of the best things about TES is that it is a first person adventure RPG. There is not enough of them around. I dont think the third person option was really designed to be used for many aspects of the game. This is evident due to the poor char animations when jumping and running etc.

Addition: I use the 3rd person camera to check out my gear also. I wouldn't mind 3rd person cinematics in some cases during dialogue sequences, but would prob prefer how was already.

There are roughly two kinds of third person control styles in video games: the kind where the character turns with the camera (like Morrowind, Oblivion, and Gears of War), and the kind where the camera rotates around the character and the character's movement is in relation to the camera (All 3D GTA games after and including San Andreas, Red Dead Redemption). The first kind is really only suited just for shooting things, and is too static for melee combat. The only way I think third person in an ES game could work is if the second kind was used, with an aim button for ranged attacks. I don't see how this could be implemented in combination with a first person view, however, and I definitely don't feel a third-person only ES RPG is the way to go.

Don't see why they gave us the 3rd person option when it was so bad. Demon's Souls third-person view worked fine, why can't they give us the option between something like that and still have the option to play 1st person? (Personally I prefer 3rd person since I'm use to it)

I'd have it like it was with Fallout New Vegas. The 3rd Person view with Oblivion was bad as you really couldn't do a closeup on your face like you could do in Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Like alot of people I only ever used it to see how my character looked.

Please DON'T go with the New Vegas third person, that was really annoying. But yes, I would like to see some improvement.

I like playing in 1st person but would also like to switch to 3rd at times for various reasons, if nothing more than to change up the game a bit. I do think there needs to be improvements to 3rd person for sure. In fact that could really improve the enjoyment to see your dude manuevering more realistically.

I voted same as always, even though I never used 3rd person for anything other than plain vanity, so I wouldn't actually mind much if it disappeared altogether.. It's a 1st person game for me, and always will be, don't know why I'd actually ever play in 3rd...

3rd person for screen shots and I think that was Bethesda's intention in the past, too.

I would prefer that there be no third person view save for a vanity camera that cannot be used when enemies are nearby.

3rd person should stay, but it should actually control like a 3rd person game.

No strafing. No backing up.

In real 3rd person hack n' slash games, pressing left and right = the character actually turns and runs in that direction, rather than strafes. Pressing down = the character runs towards the camera, rather than backs up.

That's how it works in God of War/Assassin's Creed/Super Mario/every other non-shooter 3rd person game.

Elder Scrolls' approach of keeping 1st person controls in 3rd person mode is one of the biggest reasons why the mode feels so broken. That only works if your gameplay is mostly a shooter-styled affair (a la Gears of War).

I would like it to remain the same, in Morrowind I always played in 3rd person view and only switched to open crates and I did the same with Oblivion (never had any problem with combat)

I think this would work and if you do need to shoot using a bow or simply cast magic, then the 3rd person view might change to an over the shoulder one with the first person controls, allowing you to aim your shots properly.

I react very badly against 3rd person, particuarly in the elder scrolls series. Having an almost entirly 1st person perspective game, let alone RPG, is one of the things which made the elder scrolls uniqe. And i understand that peaple are looking for a better gaming expericance, ie, during battles, but 3rd person takes something very important away, actual immersion, the kind of immersion you would have had walking down a sunny path in the great forest or marshy plains of the shivering Isles, which can only truly be gained through a 1st person perspective. 3rd person makes you feel like your playing a game, 1st make you feel as if your in a world: you talk to characters face to face(better emotional connections with characters), size and scale are more effectively expressed (huge towering moutains or castles, actually look big), combat is more intense due to the chaotic nature (enemy pounding at the shield right infront of your eyes with a warhammer), and the list goes on. So no, having any thing more than secound rate third person will jepordise a very uniqe gaming expriance overall.

I think strafing or turning should be optional, as backing up is extremely important in combat. First rule of any combat is "don't turn your back on the enemy". I don't use 3rd person myself, other than when looking for objects in high grass, my excuse being that in real life that grass would be flattened. If the game "changes" behavior depending on if I'm in 3rd person or 1st person mode, I would get confused. I even want to retain 1st person for everything. Like when I'm sitting down, knocked down, paralyzed, mount my horse, or do special attacks. I hit 3rd person view accidentally very recently and saw that my character actually turns around while performing the swing power attack. I always thought it was broken, but it's just shown differently (or rather, not at all) in 1st person.

What I also want, for 3rd person AND 1st person, is actual freelook (within limits, I'm not an owl). I should be able to hold alt key while looking around even if I'm still walking forward or strafing sideways. That would allow me also in 1st person to check my surroundings better when backing up, instead of being an advantage only to the 3rd person users.
