3rd Person View Preference

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 2:55 am

Since Fallout 3's third-person view is different from Oblivion's this leaves open the door to "tamper" with this aspect of the game. Do you have a preference or a particular type of 3rd person view and would you like to see it applied to to the TES series?

Edit: Read the question wrong. I still prefer first person to third though. It's much more immersive to me.

For third person views, I dunno. There's not one particular type of camera system that works better than the others. It's mainly just how well the development team implements the camera and how fluid it feels. That said, I suppose I prefer the 'total control' camera more than others. I like the freedom it provides.

Also, you forgot the "isometric" third person view. It's a good one too, but only works with certain types of games.

I considerably enjoyed the Guild Wars implementation. It was very similar to Oblivion's in that you could zoom in/out and hold to pan your view around. At the same time however, it was much more fluid - for instance, if your camera began to clip with your player, they became somewhat transparent (and rather neatly too, no semi-rendered polygons from arms or necks or anything). You smoothly went from first person to third person this way - it was almost as if your first person view was really inside your model, but with it invisible. Not like Oblivion where it snaps.

I think the the third person camera in TES games is fine the way it is now. I disliked the third person camera in Fallout 3 especially in vanity mode with that odd off center view.

I prefer FP, but I enjoy the ability to go outside my character and view him.

Same. I used to like isometric 3rd person, but MW/OB style of having your big bulky character take up 25% of the screen is just too much. I want to be able to see what I'm targeting. It svcks, because I would rather watch my character in action if I could. I tried installing a 3rd person cross-hair mod to try and alleviate my annoyances with trying to target ranged spells in 3rd person, but the character still takes up too much screen space.

I voted for total control. That way I can zoom out and even approximate an isometric view, or watch my character from the front without having to hold down the tab key. I've got addicted to WoW for a while there, and now every time I go back to MW and toggle into 3rd person, I end up rolling the scroll wheel to try and zoom out so I can see more of the screen without my character blocking the way.

First, like Daggerfall's. I like the option to play in 3rd person, but it's not mandatory. Don't really mind not seeing my barbie dressed character, as long as I have a paperdoll.

That's why Fallout 3's third person camera is an 'over the shoulder' camera and displaces you character to the side of the screen, so you can see what's directly in front of you.

Besides, you can move the TES third person camera out a bit and make you character take up less screen space. In general though, I've found TES games just much better played first person as well.

You can't say that any particular view is better -- it is opinion. But I like the first person view best because it is more natural. You don't see yourself from behind your head in real life. but third person has it's uses -- for example; jumping of water. with third person you can see your feet, and know when to click.

Anything as long as it doesn't svck. I do like 3rd person though, but not when it blocks my view. OTS is also very nice.

I think you hit a bullseye there, 3rd person is all about seeing things from a different perspective, seeing the characters from an unrelated party, however the world still revolves around the player, you can't use 3rd person view, to see anything but the character still, if we could exercise a little more freedom with it such as having the ability to travel with the camera around a radius around the PC, with free full directional movement, then the camera would be perfect.

Yes, when it comes to 3rd person I've always preferred isometric and full control over "over the shoulder" for some reason. I guess because I like to have the option of seeing the full character in action, and being able to move the camera around the character and zoom in and out is optimal for me. That's why I picked full control over Fallout 3's OTS style.

But without full control, I'll default to 1st person just so I can target better. OTS is close enough to 1st person that I always kind of thought of them as similar.

That's called the 'total control' camera just so you know.

Oh yeah, I agree. I was just letting you know that's what it was called so you could vote for it if you hadn't voted already.

Perhaps, but I believe the main purpose of these kind of discussions is our hopes for TESIV. The 3rd person view definitely needs to be more up-to-date for future installments of TES. I personally think full isometric in RPGs went out with the era of Baldur's Gate, Diablo 1 & 2, Planescape Torment and Fallout 1 & 2. It's excellent for strategy games, but I feel it's lacking in scope. And a full-on 3rd person with no camera control is now a bit outdated and clunky too.

They need to improve the animations a lot in ES V, as well as the camera. I cringe everytime I see the swimming animation. Third person would be a lot more immersive if the animations weren't so wooden.

I prefer First Person, but for a third person view, I like Total Control the best. I hate Oblivion's 3rd person view.
