580 GTX for crysis 2, is it worth it?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 9:31 am

I plan on getting one as soon as funds allow in September/October if I can bag one for 350 quid, I recently bought a second 5770 for crossfire thinking it would be enough for fluid dx11 at lower resolutions but unfortunately it's not so I'll be selling these off towards funds for a new card and screen.

My question, is the 580 GTX fluid enough at 1080p? Can you look up at the tessellated bricked buildings in gamekeepers without it looking like a slideshow? Can you shoot at walls etc? What are your framerates at the start of both Seat of Power and Corporate Collapse?

Basically is there anything that can make your framerate drop below 30 fps with a 580? Provide screenshots with fps as prove if you have this card as it will help me decide. I know there's benchmark results out there with 30 fps minimum but it's hard to tell what they were doing in those tests and whether they stressed it enough.

Also will a Corsair GS 600W power supply be enough to power one of these cards? I don't plan on buying a second card for SLI I've I can get fluid framerates with one.

The only thing I can advise for you is to definitely upgrade the power supply.

Other than that, I have a 560 GTX and I know for a fact that I will not be able to run on max settings at 1280x1024. Up to you to judge whether the 580 will be worth the extra $100+

Your PSU(good quality Corsair) will be fine and yes Crysis 2/DX11 is even smooth on my GTX460. A GTX 580 will have no problem running this game at 40fps and above at 1920x1080.

Please don't underestimate PSU power. You only need a very high Watt PSU for SLI or Crossfire, since one GTX580 takes up about 350Watts full load. A good quality power supply like yours can handle up to 600W and more but cheap unbranded PSUs are a difference matter.

If you're asking if the 580 is a good card, then yes it's the best right now IMO, if you're asking if it's good for C2 well that's another question, if you have a fast CPU -yes i'd get one, if your CPU is kinda slowish then maybe a modern CPU would suit you best right now, cause C2 in it's present state requires a fast CPU.
with one 580 i was 98-99% usage in SP on ultra settings with about 45FPS average and it used all the VRAM.
I'd get a 3gb version.

A 580 would be flawless at 1920x1080. Im running a 570 SC and with everything on Ultra and V-Sync on, Im running at 40-55 depending on inside, outside, action etc. When I shoot the walls or water up close I would drop to 35. Since the 580 is approx 15% faster than the 570 at stock I would assume the 580 you would be looking good. I would absolutely opt for the 3gb version of the 580 though as you will see better framerates than the standard 1.5gb models. There is a price difference, but considering how much more you would be getting it would be a good investment for future games as well. Just my 2 cents anyways!

Core i5 2500k @ 4.3
MSI P67A-GD65
16 GB Corsair Vengeance

Just upgraded a little :)

I really wish now that I waited for a little extra money to go with the 580 3gb. It kills me to load up Witcher 2 on Uber.

A GTX580 would be a great upgrade with that system. :)

I wouldn't call my sandybridge 2600k a slow CPU, so I shouldn't have no worries there.

one card probably won't max it out fluidly. I would recommend a pair of GTX 560 Ti SLI or HD 6950 CFX
2 performance cards are always much faster than one top-end card.

600watt should be barely enough for a 580 if you don't overclock high.

.

Well it is rated 48A on the 12 volt rail which meets the requirements although I thought I'd ask here first. Corsairs are known to handle more than rated so I hope I'd be OK.

I only plan on running one card, I probably won't be getting a second one until next time I upgrade my whole system which will probably be when intels haswell chips get released in 2013 so I want something that lasts for two-three years.

m8... if u have money buy gtx 580! dont even hesitate. I dont know how much fps u will get with gtx 580 but i can tell u this... GTX 560 Ti OCed at 1ghz max fps 55 and lowest fps 33. I bet its gonna be beyond 43fps in heap of fire and when i look at tessellated walls i get around 48fps. If u have money buy it! i reccomend it with all my heart! :)

People always go over what PSU wattage they need thinking the card needs 400W. I only brought a 700W because it's the only one of that model I can get and at a good price. I couldn't get hold of a 600W OCZ modXStream at a good price and the 700W version was £68 anyway.

I just bought myself a new rig. i5 2500k @ 4.2GHz. 8gb ram, and an EVGA GTX 580. Without any OC on the 580 at 1920x1080 I get lows of 35, average of about 42, and highs of 62. All on Ultra in DX 11. I gained an extra 10fps by knocking my res to 1680x1050. so my average is around 52 now.

Hope that helps.

Bump this up because it's getting close, I'm half stuck between a 570 and a 580. I would love to see screenshots or vids via camera only with the fps in of both cards through a tough level say the beginning of corporate collapse?

That would help me decide.

They're both good cards, if you can afford the 580 go for it, it's more future proof, anyways to be honest the 570 ain't got enough VRAM for SP which uses at least 1.5GB.

Vram, vram, vram absolutely. My biggest "buyers remorse" has always come from saving a few buck on vram. Especially so in C2 MP after1.9

i have the gtx 580 and i think that it is a fine gpu for the crysis 2 game. but it has one problem. it goes down after the new driver has come out. but with the 270.xx driver it runs great

I have an idea, wait 4 months for the 600 series of Nvidia, the keplar series, which is said to be 4xs faster than Fermi based GPU's.

Remember, i'm the guy on these forums that maxes this game out at 60fps with only 768mb of Vram.

4 months is too long, I'm down to one 5770 so need a boost fast.

You got two cards though, nOObi is lookin' for one, so that should be the 580, or else he could wait four months and get a card X4 the speed, that's right in four months the boys at Nvidia are gonna roll out a card that fast in sixteen weeks, sure Nvidia sure thing, your drivers are worse than AMD these days, dream on Nvidia.

I heard Kepler won't be until Q1 or 2 next year anyway, BF3 will probably be old by then..

CoolGuy has a sandy bridge cpu and knowing him it'll be around the 5GHz mark so that would help too.
Also technology doesn't move that fast even if they got it, they need to milk us for all we're worth with their latest 5 series which are still new what with the new variations out now.
Anyways i been researching CPUs recently, the sandy bridge e which is socket 2011 will be about december, the AMD bulldozer in the next couple of months, and the ivy bridge(socket 1155) and ivy bridge e(socket 2011) about summer next year, so you can see how things move, very slowly.
