7000 steps - how to make them awesome

Post » Sun Apr 17, 2011 10:48 pm

Imagine if the 7000 steps went like this:

20 steps, loading screen, 20 steps, loading screen, 20 steps, a black loading screen saying: "6940 steps later..."

Wow that would be awesome. I totally think BGS should code it that way on purpose

they should add alot of high and dark cliffs around the stairs, so creatures like sabre-tooth tigers can jump on the player from a cliff and scare the hell out of me :D

Here is my idea on how you can make 7000 steps an actual adventure on its own. Boots of blinding speed is left at home, and horse is left below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaWjwDyLjIU&feature=fvsr

That's great! The only thing that would make it better is having to fight skeleton warriors and/or giant spiders on the way up (shield bash equals instant death!).

Even if the 7000 steps don't have sections quite that perilous, I hope other mountainous areas in Skyrim do. Even for those of us who are fine with heights (I balance on high places fairly often in reality), areas like that can be quite thrilling, especially with different weather conditions, enemies, etc.

Mountains and stairs should not be included in Skyrim because I have a fear of hights. :pinch:

Now I now what I do next summer. Climbing up this path. Gonna be fun^^
Putting something like this ingame could be a bit difficult, to make it hard the way up. But would be awesome

7000 may very well be a symbolic number. (Like in the bible "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven") Meaning infinite, or just 'helluvalot'.
And the stairs could be counted starting from Solstice for all we know.

EDIT:
What I mean is, it probably won't be 7k, but it will be many, but again not in a way we might imagine.

They should make part of the staircase go through a volcanic mountain and then wrap around another mountain and then go straight like a staircase bridge to the top of some other mountain and and and...

Clearly when you attempt to climb the 7000 steps, a dragon will attack you, and you'll have to survive until it finally gets within range for you to fight back at the top.

7,000 steps wouldn't be that hard, depending on scale.

That said, the GI spread has said "7,000 steps", I expect Bethesda will have all 7,000 steps.

Actually, making the stairs narrow could be a test of sorts. Monks like to test patience and all those things, so I guess it wouldn't be out of place.

And Hoblak, damn. Norway sure is nice, we haven't got any fjords in Sweden :/

But 70x7 is only 490 :/

You're gonna get to the top, slip on a patch of ice, tumble to the bottom and have to restart.

Does anybody else doubt they can pull this off. I mean how tall does that mountain have to be to actually have 7,000 climbable steps? And to have a mountain that size in a open world game world, no loading between areas would mean the new game engine would have to be doing something really special.

Is there a chance it's less then 7,000 actual steps in the game?

At 7" each it would be 4083ft.

If it really is 7,000 steps, it's going to take a lot longer than 5 minutes... you're going to take over a 1,000 steps a minute? I doubt it's going to be like Oblivion where steps are just for show and you basically glide up them.
it probably will be based on the character speed.

A mate of mine went up these steps in Rome, which the pilgrims go up on their knees. On the top step, some funny bucko had written 'Sid Vicious Lives.' Can't see that making it into the game though. Maybe should start a thread on 'Graffiti in Thamriel.'

Maybe Dar Jee will have scribed one of his wonderful jokes into the top of the steps.

I want more, 7000 is nothing. In Oblivion you can run up like 10 stairs in a second, 7000 / 10 / 60 = 11 mins and 40 seconds, it may even take less than 11 minutes, pretty sure you can take even more than 10 steps in a second. I took 15 steps at cloud top in 1 second with 40 Athletics and around 60 speed, with good Athletics and speed you can maybe even take 20 steps in a second cutting the time down to 5 mins and 50 seconds.

But it′s 7000 in the lore so 7000 it shall be, but I′d really like to see each step be pretty large to make it take more time and for it to be truly epic.

Same video I posted originally, but in 720 HD:

When you finally get to the top, Adoring Fan awaits you and ask why you just didn't take the highway instead :D

The actual steps are probably wider and safer, since Hrothgar is a pilgrimage spot.

Wouldn't that make it more likely for the steps to be unsound and dangerous - test pilgrim's devotion? This is Skyrim, not 'Muricah where there are handrails everywhere :P. I would go with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke4-cwNvDuE&feature=related as an example of what the path should be like. Plus snow and dragon attacks, of course.

I think there should be some kind of puzzle/challenge/fight to complete every 1000 steps or something.
Only the worthy may reach the top.

*fondly recalls getting trapped in a stampede up a winding 3ft wide staircase in Notre Dame*
