720p or 1080p for consoles

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 4:01 pm

On my samsung TV i have an option to choose optimal resolution,it always chooses 720p.and i think it looks better than 1080i,but thats just me.
To me 720p p= progressive is better than 1080i,forgot what the "i" means.....either way the "p" is better,so 720p is better,for me,not everyone else.
Some of it is what your TV can do too. If you disable display discovery on xbox dashboard it opens up more resolutions, but your TV/monitor as to be able to do that...but the options there.
My TV for example will not do 1080p only 1080i. Like i said the "p" is much better,it's smother and cuts down picture splitting etc.
Anyway,in a nutshell....720p is fine for me

The "i" is for interlaced. It only refreshes half of the screen at a single time. This makes the quality of the picture lower then if it was to be refreshed all at the same time such as 1080p.

Console versions will be at 720p. The game wouldn't be playable nor fun if it were rendered at 1080p for consoles.

Whatever the heck 2048x1152 is, is what I'll be playing at xD

(What the actual texture res is, who knows /shrug)

I'm not the only one doing 2048x1152, although I liked Oblivion better on the console so I will be hooking up my laptop to my 37" 720p TV from time to time as well.

I have a fairly beefy PC and a 55" 1080p LCD TV which I play my games on, so this is the route I'm going...... However, I'm also a bit of an achievment junky and will probably end up getting Skyrim on the 360 as well eventually. I fully understand that there is no way that an open world game like Skyrim will be rendered in true 1080p on the 360, but it will still look bloody good (see trailer, which is playing the 360 version, yes?).
I have recently been playing Oblivion from scratch on my PC (with mods) and have the graphics whacked right up. It looks fantastic!! For a little test, I loaded up my 360 version the other night and compared the two in similar locations. I have to hand it to the 360, it holds up pretty well! It's amazing what they can do with limited hardware like the 360.

most likely 1080p, I dont see why bethesda wouldnt want to let people get the best out of the game as possible. 1080p is becoming the standard nowadays

Hardly, more the other way around - as the overall standard of graphics increases there's less and less extra power remaining for things like resolution. More games these days are sub-HD, like any CoD, Crysis 2, so on.
1080p will never become the standard on this generation of consoles, there simply isn't the power for it.

A desire for 1080p on the console is a desire for lesser quality graphics in my opinion. Same goes for 60fps over 30fps. It's a waste of resources that could be used to make the game look better on that limited hardware.

Agreed. I watch DVDs in 480p and they are alot more realistic and smoother than some 1080p games.

And sitting on the sofa 3 metres away, you can't tell much difference between 720p and 1080p. I prefer anti-aliasing.

Rather have more content than graphics 780p is fine. They could have an added 1080p patch for PC users who want more for graphics though.. just a thought

1280x720 (720p) is good enough for a console, but it's a game resolution for low-end PCs today. A 1080p patch for the PC version would be an insult/joke.

Most common PC resolutions these days are 1680x1050 and 1920x1080 (1080p).

Resolutions don't work like that - it's simply inherent in a 3D renderer to be able to render at arbitrary resolutions, whether that be 1280x720, 2650x1600, or just about anythingxanything. Consoles are locked to low resolutions because the higher your resolution, the harder it is to render, and they don't have the spare power.

Monitors also have no need to distinguish between progressive and interlaced, so we tend to use the actual resolutions rather than marketing speak.

Both consoles will probably be limited to no more than 1280x720.

Although amusing enough the 360 version of Oblivion ran at 1024x600.

If the XBOX version had more than 720p, why was the trailer in 720p hm?

Hi what is a "p" exactly? I don't know many technical terms except for some weird stuff. But I do know that my TV has 1080p and it looks OK.

Also I am new (first post). Surprised this name wasn't taken. Guess it got sweeped a few weeks ago...

"p" means Progressive, as opposed to i, interlaced. Basically it means that every frame the entire frame is drawn, one line after another, until they're all updated. Interlaced draws every other line.

Basically, "p" is "You don't have to worry about it", and "i" is "doing something different".

I would think 720p.

1. 1080p = more visual detail but less game content
2. A lot of consoles have component cables not HDMI, component maxes out at 1080i

Ummm no my PS3 uses HDMI infact I have it plugged into HDMI in in my Sony Bravia. Wii's use component video.

Undoubtedly Skyrim will be another 720P release for the consoles, which isn't bad mind you if done properly, look at Uncharted 2 for example, that game looks fantastic. From the trailer 720p looks great on the Xbox too, I can easily handle those graphics ...if not I will go get a Asus G73 gaming laptop in the next few months, then I can go get a wireless mouse/keyboard, plug my Laptop into my 52" Sony Bravia FullHD screen and play Skyrim in 1080p which should look fantastic :) At worst I can use the Laptops 17inch 1080p screen should still look nice if I can run Skyrim in 1080p on it of course.

I'm guessing that these are TV resolutions. It doesn't matter to me but which ever one looks the best and more importantly performs the best is the one that I would pick.

Hmmm, why do people think that it will go 720 ? Don't the most modern games right now have 1080 ? Oblivion for the PS3 had 720p. And that was a few YEARS ago

Given the screenshot section is claimed to be entirely taken from an X-Box and it's all pictures of 720p quality I'd say 720p would seem the likely candidiate.

It doesn't really matter to me to be honest, but I hope it has 1080p. I have a TV that can use that to it's full effect now, so it'd be cool. I for some reason think it will have 720p though.

The vast majority of games are below 1080p and some even below 720p.

Here are some examples of games on the 360 below 720p:
Alan Wake = 960x544
Aliens Vs Predator = 1120x630
Alone in the Dark = 1040x600
Call of Duty: Black Ops = 1040x608

Game developers are sacrificing resolution to try and keep the frame rate up for the aging console hardware.
