12.7mm SMG

12.7 SMG is great at close range. It only has a 15 round clip but it doesn't take long to reload and it's way more powerful than any other SMG.

Don't underestimate melee weapons when up close and personal. My character was surrounded by three gang members. I chose the lead pipe. I took a bit of damage, but not as much as the three that attacked me. The problem is getting in close. You can attack faster with a lead pipe or a sword than with a sledgehammer. Sometimes they turn and run. That is when I pull out a gun.

Laser and plasma weapons are impossible to silence because the light beams and plasma torroids rip through the air displacing molecules as they fly, creating the screaching/zapping sounds.

Lightning=/=Laser beams.

Although by the way its portrayed in the game even if it were silent it's still a huge orange laser beam, making it easier to be detected.
Then again this is Fallout Science! And as such its shown the laser weapons make a noise.

Any large amount of electrical energy going through the atmosphere will ionize the air, that will make noise. So, while the beam of light is silent, the effects on the air are not. Think of one of those Tesla Domes where you get the static electricity.

Go to Contreras at Camp McCarran. Not only can you do his quest to get This Machine, but you can also buy absurdly large quantities of 12.7mm ammunition, at about 1000+ rounds of regular 12.7mm bullets and quite a but of HP bullets too.

But anyway, I love the 12.7mm pistol and submachine gun. Absolute powerhouses in CQC situations. And with the silencer, it becomes an excellent sneak weapon as well.

12.7 smg silenced / silenced sniper rifles are prob the most introductory form of sneak character. How sneaky do you have to be using either one of those overpowered weapons? Silenced sniper rifles are like an easter egg weapon.

I suggest some combo of the following:

Low strength / high agility / high luck

Pistol of your choice ( I suggest lucky so you can combo w/ the cowboy perk + it is a hold out weapon )
professional perk
rapid reload
better criticals
cowboy perk (for revolver buff, plus stealthy throwing knives )
silent running (can pretty much leave sneak at 70 IMO, cause once you have this perk sneaking becomes SO easy.)

If you want to go long range / silenced Ratslayer works wonders.

It is a narrow build and you won't use any heavy weapons, but you're a sneak character right?

I think it is worth mentioning that smaller weapons (pistols, revolvers , etc actually make less noise than their larger counter parts.
