12.7mm SMG

Post » Sat Mar 27, 2010 11:36 am

I am planning on making a stealth character, but I don't want to be focused on long range sniping or the like. So I looked up the different silenced weapons for close quarters and the only 2 that were fully automatic were the 12.7 mm and the .22. So my question is whether the 12.7mm SMG is an effective weapon for a stealth character. I would greatly appreciate an input on this especially personal likes and dislikes you've experienced with it. Thank you in advance for any help on this matter.

I don't know about for stealth characters but I don't find it that great of a weapon mostly because I can't find that much ammo for it.

A silenced 12.7MM Pistol/SMG are good choices, Though it may take a bit of caps to afford the ammo.

Ironically, thanks to its rather large spread, 12.7mmSMG is more of a personal defense weapon (aka panic weapon).

You can take Trigger Discipline to increase it maximum range, but I would say hold your breath for the return of stealth assault rifle, or get mod with some silenced automatic weapon.

Basically, not really feasible as a bread and butter weapon. It will prove very effective in close quarters, but don't think for a moment that it's anything other than a panic button.

12.7MM Pistol is a better weapon for a stealth character honestly.

Thank you all for your opinions. If not the 12.7 SMG, do any of you have a particular preference for a stealth weapon, if you don't mind my asking? Should I maybe go melee and carry a pistol for backup instead?

All top tier melee/unarmed weapons do not count as silenced; so the most powerful silenced weapon is still, silenced sniper rifle.

12.7MM Pistol Silenced or a 10MM Pistol w/ attachments.

Melee-Stealth is'nt very easy to do (At least thats my opinion..) so I would recommend using Melee/unarmed as backup.

Sniper, even loud, is fine. With a high enough sneak you can shoot people from m ar away and for some reason, sometimes they don't care, and you can sneak crit the others.

I say melee should be your driving weapon. With sneak, you just time it and walk behind them and shank for close quarters. You could also go explosives to start some havoc. Drop a few mines, throw dynamite into a group of 4-5 things, and watch (:

If you wanted to make a pistol stealth character then for maximum effectiveness you'd take the 12.7 mm Silenced pistol, make sure you wear light armor so you can move at the fastest sneaking speed possible. Also take the Professional perk for increased sneak attack pistol dmg. Additionally take improved criticals for an extra 50% dmg

A 12.7mm Silenced pistol with all the perks and hollow point bullets could do a 1 shot bypassed sneak attack of 70dmg + 70dmg crit x 2 for sneak attack +20% for professional perk +50% for improved critical = Around 300+ dmg with one shot.

Not really, it's a nice conversation piece, but as a weapon it kind of svcks. The spray is all over the place, you're changing magazines every 15 rounds, you're horribly vunerable during mag swaps, and the ammo is only sold by two freaking merchants in the whole Wasteland in bulk. I stick with Vance's SMG, yeah it's only 9mm, but you can load that bad boy with 60 round drums of +P or hollow points, plus it has the high-speed bolt kit already installed.

Long as you don't stab a certain character in the back 12.7mm ammo can be had at a rate of 1500+ rounds every 3-5 game days. One big advantage of the 12.7mm weapons is in hardcoe mode the ammo is the lightest in the game. A 12.7mm SMG + Ammo is going to weigh less than a 10mm SMG + Ammo.

I was going to say this. You just need to find the guy who sells the ammo and you should be fine. It's expensive but by mid- to late-game you're fairly rich thanks to casinos. It's just hard to find the 12.7mm weapons. They don't turn up until you're a higher level and even then it's fairly random and you need to get lucky.

There is a certain quest that would lead you to a 12.7mm Pistol and SMG; that part is very feasible for teen characters to get pass (normal).

The pistol also have rather low critical damage for some reason, so The Professional is a "authentic" kind of perk imo.

Stealthy gameplay doesn't go well with automatic weapons.
You need one-hit-kills.
I always enjoy targetting 3 guys in VATS while hidden and kill them all in 2 seconds.

Yeah, you can't expect to be too stealthy with an automatic weapon, even one that is silenced. Really, if you want a firearm, perhaps use a silenced 10mm pistol with extended mags and laser sight (can your enemies see the laser sight?).

I'd put a lot of skill points into melee and unarmed, and then consider using a melee weapon such as a sword, knife or axe or something? Not sure what all are considered 'silenced' melee weapons...

Go to Contreras at Camp McCarran. Not only can you do his quest to get This Machine, but you can also buy absurdly large quantities of 12.7mm ammunition, at about 1000+ rounds of regular 12.7mm bullets and quite a but of HP bullets too.

But anyway, I love the 12.7mm pistol and submachine gun. Absolute powerhouses in CQC situations. And with the silencer, it becomes an excellent sneak weapon as well.

On a related note, I never understood why laser weapons aren't considered to be silent.

It's a beam of light, how is it making noise?

Ask JE why Laser ain't silenced.

But it is either laser in sci-fi always produce "pew""jiw" sound, or superheated air produce some kind of sonic boom like gun shot.

Lightning=/=Laser beams.

Although by the way its portrayed in the game even if it were silent it's still a huge orange laser beam, making it easier to be detected.
Then again this is Fallout Science! And as such its shown the laser weapons make a noise.
