Abandoned Shack deleted all my items stored in the chest.

Well, the items are not going to be there forever... Imagine how big the save game file would be...
It would be a problem for consoles...
Like the problem some PS3 users are experiencing now.

if you dont buy it, its not safe to store your stuff there!!!!!

Astrid gives you a key and says the place is yours, so, yeah...not like I just stumbled into a random cabin and left my stuff there.

I'll be porting my Oblivion Containers mod to Skyrim, which makes all containers in-game "safe" - items won't be removed when the cell resets unless no player items are in the container.

I remember that! It was probably the best mod I ever saw. Anywhere could be a safehouse after containers stop respawning haha.

Yup, every container inside a house you buy is safe to store items in.

Fun fact, both the help menu and load screen also tell you that storing item in chests/containers anywhere other than your house/houses may result in the items being lost.

I've been using Broken Fang cave for a while now and have not run into an issue. It is deffinitly one of the better "home-style" caves in the game from what I have seen. You get a chest, 3 beds, an enchanting table, and an alchemy table ALL along with your own dead vampires. Hell you even get a cage to put them in if their dead bodies creep you out.

I have no direct experience, but my friend swears his home in whiterun has stuff stolen from his alchemy room. I have seen random 'theives' about town - and he travels with his house carl, Lydia so the house lays empty while he's out.
