Abilities anolysis and updates

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:40 pm

Thanks to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGUv0MoP5Qs and the the Compendium we are learning more about the abilities in Brink. We still don't have a complete list but know there will be over 50, some estimates puts it at 58 or so.

PS Kudos to H0RSE because lots of the info is coming from the http://www.fragworld.org/frag/brink/the-fragworld-brink-compendium.html that he created

Abilities can be purchased when you level up be we now know they are based on rank, which is different from level.

There are 5 ranks:

R1: lvl 1-4
R2: lvl 5-9
R3: lvl 10-14
R4: lvl 15-19
R5: lvl 20

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGUv0MoP5Qs Shows that many abilities can only be unlocked at higher ranks. For example the medic self revive (debatably OP) is rank 4, so you will at minimum have to be level 15.

http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/3277/universalabilities.png

8 of the 10 known universal abilities. The others being silent running and unknown.

Great list wraith, its interesting that downed fire isn't unlocked until the last rank - guess that won't make it as much of a factor as I originally thought

Nice list Wraith. Hopefully I'll be able to write up a thread/list for when we get more mission info to go along with this thread.

And @ Jessome: Yeah..... same.

It's too bad they don't sticky these things, it'd probably prevent a lot of repeated topics

Well, if after release threads don't get stickied at all, then I might move on to another forum.
There should end up being a thread entitled "Consolidated List of Guides" at least.

Edit: @Wraith... sadface....

I'm so used to big open forums with lots of sections...

You got all of that from like a 2 minute video? My gosh man, you're a genius! Makes all the classes look very tempting. Do I want Healing, Turrets, Explosions or Sabotage?

Indeed plus my own rather considerable knowledge, also I give credit to H0RSE at the top. Credit where credit is due.

No doubt Wraith has done a considerable amount of work himself helping out others with things as well.
I kind of blame myself for not knowing about Brink earlier or I would have had plenty of time last year to do the same.

Really want this game to succeed. And a fun, sizable, active community is where its at.

I'm gonna be dissapoint if I have to choose between Downed fire and the laz nade.

Granted, when a heavy can have medium weapons as a secondary, that's a really powerful ability.

Thanks for the information bro. :foodndrink:
I will choose the medium soldier class for some fun, support the teammates and always find a good cover to engaged with the enemies.
I will definitely use the flash-bang to work with the teammates, "breach & clear".

P.S. Looks like the hip fire accuracy is more reasonable than the last trailer, which it will not become too "counter strike".

A few observations:

The soldier and engineer have two unknown icons with a kevlar vest, but the engineer icon has the 3 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevron_(insignia) in it and the soldier's doesnt. I suspect the engineer has an armor buff for teammates, and soldier has something else.

Soldier's rank 5 ability interests me. At first glance it looks like c4. If it is, it doesn't look the same as the bomb we see soldiers planting on objectives in the videos. The explosive charge planted on objectives has a keypad and handles on it, whereas the charge in the icon has what looks like an antenna and the bomb sitting on a block of something, as well as a tag hanging off of it. Remote bombs? Kill-by-mail fun pack? It could also be an equipment pack, it's hard to tell.

One more thing on soldier, taken from the almighty compendium:
- One of the Soldier’s abilities is to shield another player. This basically attaches you to that player so that you're a turret moving with him. But when he takes damage, the damage applies to you.

Pretty likely that's the shield with bullets on it.

The shield has been removed from the game, they couldn't make it work well.

I really don't see the Medic-Self-Revive to be OP at all. You can just finish him off, making him unable to use it.

Yeah, i think a Heavy Shield and Medic would be annoying to see.

@ Revo, yeah think thats smart that they put that in, i always aim to try finish off people. I agree, its not OP.

Heavy medic/Heavy soldier pairs are probably what put a big hole in the shield ability. Cant imagine it would be too easy to take them down when all the damage goes to the soldier while the medic can just heal/revive as necessary. Not to mention that they would both be using the biggest guns in the game, with the solider handing out plenty of ammo.

It appears the compendium is out of date then. [heresy] H0RSE's compendium must be a bad source of information. [/heresy]
