I remember seeing a TV program that explained that the whole "kick the door in" thing is largely just a TV thing and that most doors are FAR too strong to be easily kicked open like that.

I think lock picking should have some kind of advantage. I don't think you should just be able to bash through it. Magic or skill should be required in my opinion.


It basically comes down to the deadbolt and where you kick. Longer deadbolts(assuming they are placed in decent wood) make it harder to force open, the location and strength of your hit are also important. You want to target the lock/doorknob area usually so all the force is delivered right at the deadbolt. Of course weapons of some kind help quite a bit, especially specialized ones like the police battering rams. Still it has to be one heck of a blow to due it on one try.

wouldnt mind it. in fact there were mods in oblivion and fallout 3 that let you do this. one thing they have to do is fix lockpicking. its currently a useless skill to pick since you can open locks with alteration and the oblivion minigame could be defeated with barely any skill. adding this in only makes lockping even more stupid to pick.

I voted to have door/chest bashing included because I play a thief character and think that it would add immersion to the game. First off I would look at it like this : As a thief I have to learn how to pick a lock not just because I want to be stealthy but also because I am not strong enough to open the by smashing it. So if I know that it is possible to open a door by smashing it then that makes my talent seem more real.

I also think it would help immersion because even the smallest, weakest individual who is stealthy by nature my have a need to bash a lock in once in awhile. Say my character thinks that his wife is hiding behind a locked door getting it on with the local pretty boy wizard. In a fit of rage he isn't going to take the time to pick the lock, he is gonna bust through that door. Not just to get through it but also as a show of strength to put fear into the wizard.
