Ability Pips; Refill too slowly?

Post » Sat Sep 04, 2010 4:00 am

Hai Guize!

I was just watching the new "Get SMART" & realized that abilities take off "pips" for their use. (Well, I knew this before, but I wasn't aware of a few things)

I'm fine with this mechanic (Better than separate cooldowns) but I had once grievance; The "Pip Bar" fills too slowly.

I would have it refill faster, but disable self-buffing & make offensive ordinance take more Pips to deploy. I think that this would make the game faster-paced, with more teamwork, while discouraging "Lone Wolf" gameplay.

What do you guys think?

I would remove refillable pips if it were up to me, but I guess they made it work.

I think it would turn into an ability spamfest. I don't feel they refill too slowly, there were points in the video where you could clearly tell it was refilling slower than it actually will because they wanted to show you i guess, or at least that the impression i was under.

What would you place to remove spamming of abilities?

No, because because then Engineers would place like 10 turrets and it would be over powered.

I think that those used to BC2 might have a bit of trouble. Everyone should get used to it after a while. The refill rate was probably heavily considered by SD anyways.

Note how I said "Make offensive abilities take more pips"

I like the way they have it set up atm. Not only do your abilities use pips, but it appears some of them have cool-downs as well.

Can't really comment until I see how it works in the gameplay. I don't really know how well it will/won't mesh with the gameplay right now. I'll come back on the tenth. ;)

Yes but over time they could build up a large amount.
A turret limit could be (and probably already is) implemented.

You quote the right guy? I said nothing about spamming, or the removal of abilities. I said, I don't think added pips should be permanent, once their health is gone, they are gone, and must be re-pipped so to speak. I don't think you can just get super buffed, and everything refills itself,

I think the refill speed is fine as it was (the actual speed, not the fast version when they were explaining how it worked). I'm sure there will also be ways to augment one's supply refill speed, as well as getting more pips.

I know there's an ability for that, and I know there's a "Supply Checkpoint"

Creating threads like this and making these sorts of claims prior to actually playing the game is nothing more than outright speculation and unwarranted at this point. Play the game 1st and then question fine-tuning it's mechanics.

I can see it in videos released a few hours ago, I can speculate.

But to be fair to Deighvyd, mate, we don't know how fast paced the game is, or exactly how damaging grenades and molotovs are, even if we can estimate the time taken for a pip to refill on this certain guy's build.

Give this man a prize, I thought i was the only one who thought "What the hell is everyone making all these useless threads for? The game isn't out yet."

Character threads
Class threads
Weight threads
Weapons threads
etc, we don't know enough for anyone to actually have an opinion yet.

I gotta say, that given everyone's responses so far and that some of you are in solid speculation mode, you're all a bunch of well mannered folks. Premature discussion or not, I look forward to playing with you all online. /bow

That's because the mods are watching :spotted owl:

@OP- They seem fast enough but not too fast to spam with. It probably looks slow now but when you actually play, time flies and they'll be plenty fast.

Slower would just make it so you have to be a little more conservative with your pips just like playing a dwarf in shadowrun you have to be cautious of using essence and being left with none when you need it the most.
