My main is a level 50 mage. My advice is to take any perks that cut magicka cost as much as possible. Wear items to increase max magicka and carry lots of magicka potions. Bring a heavy armor follower to take some heat for you, and don't be afraid to use scrolls and staves.

Illusion and conjuration are really useful to mages in Skyrim.

The Illusion can confuse your foes and make you a more sneaky spell caster and all mages can benefit from stealth.

Conjuration for the elemental atronachs to defend you, then you can build up to the Dremora Lords, they can be powerful tanks yo absorb damage and farther distract your foes.

Then you can add Alteration and restoration.

Alteration allows you to cast shield spells, or you could go try an armor set and make a battlemage or spellsword type, then you can overllook this tree.

Restoration will allow you to heal yourself obviously.

Alchemy and enchanting are excellent skills to buff your mage.

Alchemy can restore your health or magicka and buff you in several ways.

Enchanting allows buffs also.

Beware on alchemy and enchanting about the level of power you wish. You can make thee two abilities extremely powerful or not the choice is yours. I just use the varying power levels for how I choose to roleplay any given character.

You can use all of this to supplement destruction.

Be prepared to run around alot and create distance, choose where your fights will be, and make sure you have at least two possible routes at all times.

You definitely want to do alchemy, for the destruction fortification potions. They will increase your damage.

As was said earlier, combing alchemy and enchanting is extremely useful.

I tend not to take any followers with me, since they usually end up in the way, anyways.

I recommend using http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1273561-pure-mage-guide/, it has really helped me build a successful mage for the higher levels.

I used to troll, but then i took an arrow to the knee.
But seriously =D, when you pick up the impact perk for destruction, it helps to use it at precisely the right times to make full use of the stagger durations an conserve mana at the same time. If your dual spamming say 2 firebolts, you will chew through mana too quickly and you may be over whelmed. Start out with dual casting for the stagger, then cast 2-3 fire bolts individually, then dual cast again for another full duration stagger. as you will get a higher damage out put, in conjuction to your mana usage, if you cast atleast 3 individually. Its a silly mechanic, i know, but for now we just have to go along with it ^.^
