About Oblivion overhauls

Post » Wed Aug 13, 2014 1:06 pm

Is there any overhaul that basically changes Oblivion to Morrowind 2? I tried Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and I think it's the best overhaul for me, from the ones I know, but I don't like the enemies and items it adds, they feel out of place to me. I just want vanilla Oblivion, without the level scaling. So static levels for enemies and hand-placed loot.

Also, if there isn't any mods like that, does anybody know any tutorials where I could learn to make these things myself? It would be fun to try out.

There is probably not a mod out there that does exactly what you want. OOO, Fran's, MOO, TIE, FCOM are among the most popular. MOO might come close to what you want since you can easily turn off features you don't want in the ini but there is no hand placed loot.

If you want to get started in modding Oblivion, this is a good place to start.

Thank you for your answer.

Am I the only one who's been wanting a mod like this? I guess I'll see how much work it needs to make a mod like that.

You could take a look at http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/3321/? by gq13kid and http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/6085/? by Lord_Gallant. They won't turn Oblivion into Morrowind 2.0 but they might bring it closer to what you want.

There are mods that overhaul the leveling without overhauling and changing the game, search for leveling at the Nexus. See the links above ^

Creating and placing a bunch of hand placed loot would be a fair bit of work, since each piece would be hand made and hand placed.

Thanks for your suggestions, but randomized loot won't work for me. Even though it could be better than vanilla Oblivions system, it just somehow bothers me to know that it's randomized, and it adds to my immersion when it's hand-placed like in Morrowind. And with hand-placed loot, if done well, gives you incentive to explore every corner of a dungeon for hidden items.

I'd love to have this kind of mod because level scaling is the biggest problem I have with Oblivion, so it could make it a perfect game for me.

Yeah true, I'd start by removing the scaling. But I've always been interested in game design so it would be fun to try and make the dungeons more fun with hidden items and enemy placement. Even if I learn how to do it, I'm sure I'd never finish it. :D

Getting rid of enemy scaling is actually very easy to do. It just involves unticking a check box for each scaled enemy. But balancing a game with those newly-unscaled enemies would be a harder proposition, I'd think, since their appearance in the leveled lists was designed with scaling in mind.

So it would require hand-placing the enemies too? I can't think of a scenario where there would be problems with them appearing. I won't be suprised to find 30 lvl dremoras inside Oblivion gates.

And can't you choose which type of enemies spawn in the dungeons?

Could it be possible to just remove those added items and creatures from OOO? By the way, is the hand-placed loot in OOO only in chest or are they hidden in different places in the dungeons, like Morrowind?

Most enemies and loot in Morrowind weren't hand-placed. They were added via leveled lists, just as they are in Oblivion and Skyrim. You couldn't find Dwemer items in the game, for instance, until about level 6. You didn't encounter Winged Twilights until about level 20. So completely eliminating loot and enemies added by leveled lists and hand-placing everything is not really Morrowind 2.0. It is some new game altogether.

The hand-placed loot and enemies you are remembering were mainly found in dungeons. And even then dungeons mostly contained leveled loot, as in Oblivion.

I was actually going to suggest just deleting all the extra loot and creatures from OOO. That would come fairly close to a kind of ersatz Morrowind 2.0.

Really? I didn't know, I never noticed. Huh. Did it still have stronger enemies in dungeons? I guess the Oblivion that I want is even more oldschool than Morrowind.

I guess I'll try removing all those added stuff from OOO, someday.

If I remember correctly, almost all dungeon enemies were completely static. They were named, they were hand-placed and they did not respawn after they were killed. This is true of humanoid enemies (like bandits). But there may have been exceptions (such as Daedra). I can't remember if there were leveled non-humanoid enemies inside dungeons or not.

It's been awhile since I played so my memory here is a little hazy. Turija, or somebody else who's played the game more recently, can probably shed more light on this.

Makes me wonder why they took a different approach with Oblivion. It makes sense to have the main quest related enemies scaled, but they could have had static level dungeons elsewhere. Especially the decision to have bandits wearing daedric baffles me.

Too many people complained that Morrowind was easy at high levels.

Actually bandits don't wear daedric armor in Oblivion. They wear glass at high levels. Marauders, on the other hand, do wear daedric armor at high levels. The overhaul I use (Maskar's) takes care of these issues. It probably does a lot of what you want, and can be adjusted extensively with just a text editor by editing the ini file. But there is no hand placed loot.

OOO has lots of unique items hand placed around the world, i.e. in dungeons and on enemies. Much like in Morrowind you can for example find a single set of Daedric armor spread around the world (OOO also comes with an optional No Daedric items plugin, which removes those from leveled lists altogether - and they are harder to come by than in vanilla even without it).
