about the HUD

Post » Thu Jul 22, 2010 5:39 am

I've heard from some people that there is none, I've heard that's it's temporary, I've heard it's optional, I've heard a lot of rumors
I've even seen a screenshot or 2 without a HUD, but what I'm curious about is did the GI article at any time specifically state there is no HUD? or is this being assumed from the looks of the picture? I ask becuase they're a good chance the HUD is just edited out for the sake of the screen shot

I'm curious about this too, as I'm in the UK I haven't seen the article so the only thing I can go on are the discussions here - and some of them are getting quite crazy, it's difficult to determine what is solid information and what is speculation. I got the impression that you could turn off the HUD in first person mode so it was optional, but I cannot determine whether that is fact or speculation.

The GI article specifically said: "Whether you're looking at the world from the HUD-free first person view...". So, yes. There is no HUD. Whether or not it's optional, I don't know.

I hope it's optional, or at least icons and health bars pop up when needed... otherwise I'm gonna be one angry fan.

Very nice. Will definitely be great for increasing immersion and overall liveliness of Skyrim.

From what I believe, as it is obviously the easiest path, it will most likely be a simple fading option, as in Red Dead Redemption or Crysis, where the hud simply fades away when out of combat and reappears when in combat or when a context sensitive button is pressed.

I'm very excited about this. I am not a fan of HUDs (especially in a fantasy world).

Oblivion's HUD, complete with hold-my-hand-because-I'm-a-toddler compass quest markers drove me nuts. DarNified DarkUI was always something I'd immediately install and edit so I could turn everything off.

From what I understand, you can toggle off the HUD in first-person mode. But I haven't actually read the article myself yet and could be wrong.

If it pops up when you press a key/button I will happy, I don't need it up all the time but I would like to check it occasionally and have it onscreen during combat (or have the option to have it on all the time if I want), so I hope you are right about that.

I actually have a credit card bluetacked to the bottom of my TV which I rotate to cover the compass when I play oblivion.

It works perfectly.

From what the article said it would appear that there is no hud in 1st person but there is in 3rd. That is pretty much all we know.

Im thinking it will be simular to Far Cry 2 where its not there untill you take damage and it shows your health and then goes away after a few seconds of not taking damage.

It could also be similar to the Oblivion HUD mods that got rid of everything if it was full, and slowly faded in those things that weren't full. I like the idea of no HUD, as I played with those mods in Oblivion anyways.

There's never been a HUD in third person; that's why they wouldn't mention it's not there in third person. ;)

Im not worried either way, but with HUDs being so easy to toggle on/off, Id be suprised if they totally removed them with so many players being used to them.

NO HUD = GOOD

I'm really happy with the news that there is no HUD. A HUD is a very 'old school' concept and there are now many options and design choices that look better and make the player feel a lot more immersed in the world. Good work Beth.

I'm worried about it being Hud-Less. I fear for them replacing the compass with something so much worse.....the yellow trail from Fable 2&3.

it will be awesome if they put some real life danger shock to know you are really in bad condition like harder breathe and spitting blood, then you know you nedd to heal yourself. NO HUD= Beth for presidents IF well put.

Or, ya know, they could replace it with something much better, like actual directions and detailed information!
