Sorta.
Spoiler Technically, you MUST bargain with HM to defeat Miirak. In order to defeat Miirak, you need to bring a certain someone to HM. The good news is that the man understands the reason he needs to be brought to HM, and will willingly follow you (provided you've done a certain quest for him.) While he is killed by HM, there's no way you, or the guy, could know this in-game.
Also, I'd imagine your main is having a difficult time with Skyrim, as a lot of the content runs on Grey-and-Black morality. Wanna adopt some children? You need to kill the Rhymes-with-witch who runs the orphanage before you can, kickstarting the Dark Brotherhood questline. Which you can subsequently destroy. Blades Vs. Greybeards. Civil War. The Companions. Really, several of the sidequests, a good chunk of Skyrim's Mainquest, Dawnguard, and the College of Winterhold have clear-cut Good vs. Evil to it.
