About the 20+ Settlements

Post » Wed Jan 12, 2011 4:12 am

What are your thoughts on these 20+ settlements?

I hope they will be more alive such as the 5 major cities and opposed to Oblivion's smaller settlements. Also not just a stable, two houses and maybe a small chapel for example. And definitely more than 15 NPCs living there. I want there to be like maybe 10 homes, a couple inns and taverns, a chapel, a few shops (for armor/weapons/spells/potions/training etc.)

im in two minds tbh.. I fear there will be too many towns and no great expanses of wilderness.

I want to get lost for days in the wild.. not be 5 mins away from any town at any point on the map.

I agree. I would like to be wandering in the wilderness and have plenty of time doing it as well. But I'm afraid of these 20+ settlements not being very alive...almost pointless. Think about it...in OB the only thing you would go to a settlement for would most likely be a quest...or just kill someone randomly. Know what I mean?

Well, you could get lost in Morrowind (and in oblivion if you use a mod changing the size of trees). This time they will add mountains. I'm sure they will make what is needed to make we feel lost in a huge world again.

Yeah settlements were pointless in OB but I think 10+ homes is a bit too much tough. About 5 homes would be ok if those settlements are unique unlike the copy/paste settlements OB had.

For example, Grayditch is the only settlement I like in OB, it was unique and very different from the other ones and most importantly it had a story. Too many settlements in OB had only 5 villagers that could only talk about rumors.

EDIT: I wanted to say Hackdirt not Grayditch

Exactly. And yeah Grayditch, thanks I was tryin' to think of the name, was the only settlement with a point to it. And Weatherleah a little too. That's about it though.

hopefully that don't do a half as job with them like making them all the same and only involve them with one quest like oblivion... also add "stores", another thing Oblivion failed to accomplish in smaller towns.... I only remember one store in a small town in Oblivion and im not considering Inn's...

The main thing about the settlements, as people are alluding to, isn't so much the size as the content.

I don't mind them being small, so long as they have an interesting story, or a bit of lore, or quests to do. Hackdirt is a good example from Oblivion.

I hope they're larger than Oblivion. And no I do not want "a few shops" in every settlement. Maybe 1-2 shops in some of them, rarely 2. And nothing specialised just the stuff passers by the locals would need. The whole point of a city is that it is the center of commerce, that's where everyone is, so that's where people set up shop.

Some armourer isn't going to set up shop in some town with 20 people in it where business is going to be horrific.

Yep, there's nothing I love better than stumbling upon a settlement with its own services, a few houses, and a sense of community and togetherness to it. Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether I found more than two or three that had this in Oblivion.

This. But with the whole jobs like woodcutting, forging, etc. I hope they really utilize these in the small settlements. Like one settlement being built around a mining are so that you can go there and buy mining supplies and forge weapons.

Agreed. Settlements, and cities in general need to feel like actual, living breathing places

You can see Riverwood in the trailer. It is one of the 20 settlements.

Yes.

As you can see, it is much more interesting than a settlement in Oblivion.

From a RP porspective I don't mind is there are remote settlements with few, if not a single dwelling. There's sense in there being outposts in a cold climate such Skyrims where battered travelers can weather the storm. I'm not too fussed on have more or less settlements. I think Beth will use it's wisdom and include the appropriate amount for the feel and scale of the game.

Freakingly happy. 10+ houses seems perfect. From the info we get they seem to be bigger than both those in Oblivion and Morrowind, but they could be made the same way as in Morrowind and I'd be happy. In Oblivion, it seemed Bethesda thought nobody cared about the Morrowind settlements and put 2-4 houses together just so there were settlements.

There are no such things as cities in Oblivion (or Skyrim). Anyone saying otherwise is a moron, although the Oblivion towns are indeed much bigger than the idiotically small Megaton or Bigtown (which are even smaller than a single apartment block, I mean WTF).

Seriously though, I think the Skyrim "cities" will be majestic enough, all things considered. Oblivion towns were actually quite big, if you study them. And, with the fact tat you got fewer towns in Skyrim, you can expect each one of them to be bigger than in Oblivion. But probably also a little more compact.

I actually heard about settlements having 10+ buildings, but I don't know how reliable that is.
