Why do those people at the lincoln memorial want to buy the lincoln artifacts off of you? Are they trying to erase all memory of him?

Yes because they are slavers and well Lincoln freed the slaves in his time so they don't want people to remember that.

It's not really much of a spoiler, though. Slave traders don't like Lincoln? Stop the presses!

Think. Why would one have picture of Lincoln around flowers and wine? You can do it.

You don't need to be a Yankee or a Reb. to understand the significance of this gesture....think about it....if I had an image of Winston Churchill, William Wallace, McKenzie King, Ian Smith etc. with the same items surrounding it.

Ah, you mean they were merely remembering him. I was thinking that flowers and candles were related to Abe in particular in some way.

After 200 years, Lincoln would have been a mysterious and mythic figure to the average (and probably illiterate) wastelander. Whoever made the shrine may have even been worshipping him. Not a stretch to believe that, when you have people praying to atomic bombs..

That still leaves the question of why the someone would pick the Robert E. Lee Memorial for the site of such a shrine.

I came across another place where they wanted me to collect Lincon memorabilia because they were escaped slaves and he was a hero to them.

Living in Lee's house, is used for the purpose of irony.

In real life, and I guess in Fallout life since it predate the 1950s, using Lee's Mansion as Arlington Cemetary where many Union Soldiers were buried was specifically done out of irony -- or spite, or something.

Spoiler
The excaped slaves at the Temple of the Union, and the slavers at the Lincoln Memorial, will both start the Head of State quest and they both want the artifects. Abraham Washington, the guy at Rivet City who wants the Declaration of independance, is interested in historical artifacts in general and will purchase them as well.
