Absent Without Offcial Leave

Note, this fan fiction contradicts story elements of Fallout 3, but quite frankly, I really don't care, cause this is how I envisioned the Main Quest with my RP.
Also, my character shares no relation with the Bishop family of New Reno.
And finally, this first chapter has nothing to do with Fallout 3, but I like backstory.

Chapter One

My name is Ryan Bishop, and I am, well actually once was, a Major in the Enclave Armed Forces. I was the most brilliant tactician and skilled scout-sniper the Enclave has seen in a long time, well, since my father anyways. I was born in 2227 at the Poseidon Oil Rig in the Pacific Ocean, coincidentally, three days after the birth of my rival, Augustus Autumn. The caretakers noted that our rivalry began at a young age, when he took my teddy bear and I threw a toy car at him.

However, this was probably not the only cause for the hatred between us, my dad, Kevin Bishop was the commander of the elite Verti-Assault teams and a powerful soldier, and his dad, George S. Autumn, the head scientist, also resented each other greatly. The two fathers always fought for the attention and the pride of being the most important Enclave official. This rivalry went back generation after generation, even back to 2077, when John Bishop and Ulysses Autumn were spared from the Nuclear Armageddon because of their importance to the US government. This rivalry most likely passed on to Augustus and I, although the hate could also be caused by my constant mocking of Augustus' hair beginning to turn gray when he was eighteen.

Nonetheless, the Bishops and Autumns had hated each other since right after the war, and this hate would ultimately bring about the defeat of the Enclave, thirty years in the future, but that has no bearing on the story currently.

The president had noted the rivalry, and sent George and Augustus to the recently constructed Navarro base to get them away from my father and I. Augustus and I were both fifteen, and were to begin our training to become soldiers, but thankfully, our training would be separate, and it seemed like the family rivalry was finally over.

In the fall of the year, which was 2242, my father took me on a Vertibird to undergo a training mission. The mission went well, and I killed my first super-mutant, but on the way back the Oil Rig, we noticed we could not contact them for landing clearance. Our radio was ablaze with pvssyr, and we learned that the oil rig had been destroyed, and by order of Dr. George Autumn, the now ranking Enclave member, to regroup at Navarro.

We landed quickly noticing a very large amount of other Vertibirds. All manners of Enclave personal were gathered around the airstrip, totaling around three hundred soldiers, scientists, officers and civilians. Some were sitting, others were just wandering aimlessly. They needed direction, and a good leader, like my father. However, being one pay grade below Dr. Autumn, he was forced to obey his orders.

Speak of the devil, Dr. Autumn and his son approached us.

"Listen Bishop, I know we aren't exactly on good terms, but we have a disaster on our hands, and I'll be quite frank with you, I have no idea what to do," Dr. Autumn said. "I received official orders from someone named John Henry Eden, who claims to be the new president, and he's ordering us to re locate to Raven Rock.
"But...thats just outside of Washington DC! He wants us to cross the entire country?" My father asked.
"Unfortunately, that seems to be the case," Autumn replied.
"Dear god, we won't have enough Vertibirds or fuel for that! We'll have to walk!" My father said.

To be continued soon.

Chapter Two

I won't bore you with the details of our walk, the monotonous walking across the beaten and battered wasteland that took around ten years. However, in a nutshell, we walked from Navarro and walked through the northern United States, through the pre-war states of Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and then went down through the Ohio basin and into Southern Pennsylvania. It was here, just two hundred miles away from our new home, Raven Rock, that my father was killed, more on that later.

My dad had arranged for us, around three hundred Enclave personal to travel in three separate convoys, each consisting of one hundred people, equipment and food. These convoys remained out of site of each other at all times, as three hundred people would draw way too much attention. Our groups were close enough to assist each other if needed. We had destroyed all but three Vertibirds, and the coward Dr. Autumn and his "important VIPs" got to ride in safety across the country in them. Of course my dad and I had to walk, though my dad was tons important then that egghead. Whatever, continuing. At this point, you all are probably saying, why does the almighty Enclave need to travel in such a huge group?

Well, of that previously mentioned three hundred people, only seventy-five were actually soldiers, the other two hundred twenty-five were scientists, civilians and politicians. Not exactly the fighting type you see, so our defense was spread thin, twenty-five power armored soldiers to a convoy. Fortunately, very few things in the Wastes could stand up to even one heavily armored Enclave soldier, let alone twenty five. However, I suppose it must have been "LETS CROSS THE [censored] COUNTRY" decade, because we lost several good men to the super mutants and Brotherhood of Steel. It was to the former that my father was lost...

We were near the capital city of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, which according to scouts, was completely crawling with super mutants. We had moved around the city, and were relatively safe, but someone in Convoy C. must have alerted the mutants to their position, as they began to attack the convoy. My father and I, who were in Convoy A. quickly rushed to the aid of the soldiers of Convoy C, who were being overrun. The civilians had taken cover, leaving the twenty-five power-armored soldiers to take on around two hundred super mutants. We took cover behind several different houses, watching as the mutant horde charged up the road.

"Dad, there's no way we can fight all of them, we have to get out of here, regroup with the other convoys!" I said.
"We don't have enough manpower son, we have to do something fast before they overrun us all! I'll radio Autumn for air support, have one of the birds carpet bomb the area." Dad replied, "Colonel Bishop to Dr. Autumn!"
"Go ahead Colonel," Dr. Autumn said over the radio.
"The entire ground crew is at risk of being overrun by super mutants, we need this area cleared immediately. We're completely outnumbered!" Dad yelled.
"Colonel, you know I cannot destroy an American capital city, there are precious records there, you have to deal with them yourself," Dr. Autumn sighed, sounding arrogant.

This statement was a load of [censored], the Enclave had no interest in what was in Harrisburg, the good doctor was merely being an annoyance. Nevertheless, my father knew, he would receive no air support.

"[censored] you Autumn, you traitorous scumbag! Just wait til I get to you, you pathetic little man!" My father screamed, lifting up his Vindicator Minigun in one hand and snatching the Plasma Rifle of another trooper near by, "If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself!"
"Dad no! You'll get killed!" I shouted, trying to stop him.
"Ryan, I have to do what I have to do, for the good of the Enclave. I love you and I'm proud of you, never forget it," and those were the last words I'd ever hear him say.

He charged into the open, firing as he ran, killing several mutants at the front of the pack. Small caliber bullets pinged off his armor, doing no damage. For a moment, I thought he would live, until the mutant with the Avenger began to fire, raining a hell of bullets at my father, who stood his ground, super mutants piling up around him. I quickly shouldered my sniper rifle, and took aim at the head of the Avenger wielding super mutant. The other troopers began to fire as well, raining more death upon the mutants. I pulled the trigger, and nothing, my sniper was jammed. I screamed at my father, but it was too late, the mini gun tore through his armor, leaving several fist sized holes through the armor, and my father. My father took one more step toward the beast, dropped and with his last moment, clicked the detonator in his hand, igniting the explosives he had around his belt, and causing the nuclear powered power armor to violently explode, claiming the lives of remaining mutants.

My father was dead, but he died a hero. Much unlike Dr. Autumn, who would soon die a coward.

Chapter Three

My rage had been building for awhile, ever since we had settled Raven Rock, and it was at the point that any little thing would cause me to snap at people. Everyday it was something else, whether it was something as meaningless as a scientist talking about how great Dr. Autumn was, or the fact that my father was awarded no medals posthumously. That didn't completely set me over the edge, although out of anger I had knocked Augustus cold out the next morning in hand to hand training, and the good Doctor confined me to my quarters for two days to calm down. But what set me over, the moment that caused me to blow Dr. Autumns brains out, had come one week after that...

"Ryan, wake up," James said, "Your gonna miss the ceremony. Its the day you get promoted to Colonel."

James was a couple years older then me, however, he was as naive as a young child. Despite this, he was a genius engineer and doctor, much better then Autumn. James hated the Enclave, and stayed in it out of necessity, he knew there was no life for him outside, and as much as it pained Ryan, he knew that was correct.

"James, I knocked our commanders son cold last week, I'm not getting that position, even though I clearly deserve it," I said. I wasn't bitter either, I really did deserve it, and Autumn knew it. I was the brilliant commander that had been responsible for many successful operations, and the most skillful sniper the Enclave had seen in a long time. But Autumn would do anything to keep me out of control.

It took a little bit of convincing, but I got off my lazy ass and went to the ceremony. Dr. Autumn quickly called his son up to the stage, and was quick to begin.

"While there may be a large amount of qualified individuals for this position, the president and I had decided that without a doubt, my wonderful son Augustus was a clear choice for the position. Unfortunately, the president couldn't be here today, but he had a little message for out new Colonel." Autumn said.

Typical, the president never showed up for anything. He might as well had been a computer for gods sake, we always heard him but never saw him.

"Congratulations to Augustus. I'm sure he will prove to be a wonderful commander to our organization. God bless the Enclave, God bless the USA," said president John Henry Eden in his typical warm tone, however something seemed strange to me, but I didn't think about it, instead I stood up.

"Tell me Doctor, why is Augustus more qualified then me?" I shouted. Everyone was staring at me.
"Major, sit down right now, or I'll have you court marshaled," the Doctor shouted back.
"Don't make me laugh, who will command our troops, that pathetic excuse for a man next to you with the brain of a super mutant, with the gray hair," I chuckled a little bit there, but returned to my serious tone, "Your so called wonderful son will run our Armed Forces right into the ground!" At this point, Augustus had rushed up to where I was sitting, and got into my face.
"Watch your mouth, maggot, I'm your superior now," he screamed.
"As if your laughable hick accent actually makes me feel threatened, I think your forgetting who knocked who out last week," I replied, and drove my fist right between his eyes. He slumped to the floor.

At this point, the MP's had gotten to me, and were pulling me away. But these two men weren't in power armor, and only armed with laser pistols. Not to mention they had seen much much less combat then myself, so I threw them both off of me, grabbed ones laser pistol, and disarmed the other, I put a laser blast through each of there necks, sending blood and guts all over the wall. I heard the sound of power armor arriving, so I turned back around, Dr. Autumn was still standing on the podium.

"You ignorant [censored], you know your going to be executed right, have fun in hell, tell Satan I said hello." Autumn bellowed.
"Heh, you can tell him yourself. I'll see you there," I said, feeling like an action hero with that statement.

I brought the laser pistol up, took aim, and pulled the trigger. I had never in my life felt so great, watching the blood and brain matter splatter against the Enclave symbol behind him, and watching Dr. Autumns headless body slump to the floor.

Awesome! Very well written. In my opinion the whole concept is great and the delivery is perfect. I'm very curious now. The only things I don't like are the short chapters. Make them longer. :D Or post more chapters because it's a real pleasure to read this story. :D

Chapter Four

"So soldier, what did you do to get in front of that firing squad?" The man in T-45d Power Armor asked me.
"Well I was just a simple wasteland..." I stammered, afraid that if I told the Brotherhood Paladin I was Enclave, I would be shot.
"Sorry man, nice try, I'm a bit smarter then the average Mole Rat. Your wearing an Enclave uniform, I can clearly tell, and there's no way you scavenged that because an Enclave soldier would never be outside without power armor. And my helmet is picking up on the neural interface you have," The stranger said.
"You sure know your stuff about the Enclave. But anyway, what are you gonna do with me? Clearly you shouldn't be with me, I'm Enclave," I sighed.
"So if your Enclave, why did that other soldier have a plasma pistol to your head? And I believe there's an old saying, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Tell me what you did," The Paladin said.
"I killed my commanding officer... He was such a cold heartless bastard. Ha, that's a strange thing coming from a former Enclave soldier. I'll admit it to you, friend. I've done things, evil things I'm not proud of," I replied. "But I am sure of one thing, the Enclave is certainly in the past."
"You know, we could use you in the Brotherhood," The man said. "Come with me, we'll go back to the Citadel. I'm Paladin Henry Casdin by the way."
"Its nice to meet you Paladin, I'm Ryan, Ryan Bishop," I said. "I'd love to become the part of a good organization for a change. But there's one thing I wanna do before we go. I have to get in contact with my friend James. He was a good friend of mine, and a brilliant doctor. And he hates the Enclave as well. I would like to get him out, if you don't mind."
"How will we get in contact with him? Henry asked.
"Well at one point he secretly built a dedicated radio wave receiver that he could hide in his ear, in case anything like this ever happened. If you would broadcast a signal to this frequency here, and tell him there is a stealth boy in my desk," I said.

We waited for about ten minutes, hiding in the cliff side near Raven Rock, ensuring that the Enclave patrol that discovered the dead soldiers Henry had killed had not seen them. Soon, the air flickered near me, and the form of James finally appeared.

"Bout time," I chuckled.
"Sorry about that, I didn't want to get caught," James replied.
"I don't wanna interrupt this beautiful moment, but those two troopers are coming this way!" Henry exclaimed.

Henry brought his laser rifle up, shouldered it, and fired. The laser hit the first Enclave solider in the chest, causing the soldier to stagger back, but his matte-black power armor remained completely unfazed. The second trooper fired his plasma rifle, and the bolt hit Henry's shoulder, spinning him slightly but he quickly regained his center of balance. The antiqued T-45d power armor of the Brotherhood Paladin was much weaker then even the T-51B power armor that the original Brotherhood used, and even that was inferior to Enclave Advanced Power Armor MK II.

Regardless, Casdin's power armor was better then the black uniforms of James and myself, so I grabbed him and dove back away, behind an embankment. The Enclave troopers were paying too much attention to Henry to notice them. The troopers fired bursts of plasma at Henry but, the slow moving nature of the particles, coupled with Casdin's quick reflexes and lighter power armor allowed him to dodge most of them, however, a couple bursts did hit him, blackening his dull gray armor and causing him to wince, but the trained soldier was quick to ignore his pain, and re adjust his aim, and overcharging his laser rifle, shooting a powerful burst to the knee of the first troopers power armor, and the soldier fell to his knees.

It was well known amongst Enclave armor designers that the knees were a huge weakpoint for good shooters that could hit them, and unfortunately for the grounded trooper, Casdin was a very very good shot. But Casdin had made a tactical error, and let the other Enclave soldier blindside him.

"Shi..." Casdin let out as the trooper shot him in the side with his plasma rifle. Casdin slumped to the ground and tried to inch away. I had to do something
quick, I looked around. James had brought my knife, Occam's Razor, that I had gotten from my father. I quickly snatched it from his belt, and jumped over the embankment. I took several running steps, then jumped up onto the back of the trooper. He flailed trying to get me, reaching behind him but the power armor didn't have a large range of movement, so his attempts were in vain. I quickly and expertly un fastened his helmet, I had done this to myself when taking off my own armor several hundred times. I threw it aside, and before the man could react, slid my knife across his neck. He dropped, gurgling, and died. The other trooper, despite having a bum leg was still a threat though, and he brought his rifle up and fired, missing, but the plasma grazed my body, burning me. I screamed, but quickly grabbed the fallen soldiers plasma rifle, and shot the stationary soldier until he and his armor was nothing more then a goo pile.

"Very impressive," James said.
"Looks like were even now Casdin," I chuckled, pulling him back to his feet.
"That we are, Ryan. That we are, thanks for the assist. I'll be sure to buy you a drink back at the Citadel," he coughed, still in pain.
"I'll be looking forward to that," I said, sliding the suit of Advanced Power Armor from the soldier on. I grabbed the two plasma rifles and pistols, and handed a pistol to James, and put the rifles on my back, the pistol in its holster, and the knife in its sheath. "But we gotta get there first."

Chapter Five Part One

Despite the harshness of the Wastes, Casdin, James and I had made it to the Citadel perfectly safe. I had seen pictures of the old Pentagon before, but never in person. The building had certainly detoriorated, however, the Brotherhood had scavenged different materials to hold it together and make it a fortress. However, I was certain the Enclave could certainly lay waste to this place, unless the Brotherhood had something secret weapon hidden.

Regardless, we entered, and Casdin instantly called for Elder Lyons to come meet us. He seemed to be a decent man, he seemed a bit wary of me, but was polite and accpeted me into the Brotherhood nonetheless.

As it turns out, the Brotherhood wasn't all it had been cracked up to be. Well, for me at least. As a former member of the Enclave Armed forces., the others were suspicious of me. The elder had sent me on extremely dangerous near suicide missions, but luckily for me, my superior skill and perseverance got me far, far enough to become slightly trusted, and because of my prior combat experience, I skipped initiate training and became a knight.

Ultimately, I was placed under the command of the man who had saved my life, Paladin Henry Casdin. He had directly requested that I join his handpicked men and women. This was something I was extremely thankful for, as unlike the vast majority of the Brotherhood who held me in contempt, the soldiers of the 3rd Company were a little bit different. They treated me as an equal, and respected me because of my fighting prowess and love of technology that they all shared.

The one thing I will never forget was when Casdin approached me and asked if I wanted to be moved to his company. I didn't know it when I had met him all those weeks ago, but Henry was a high ranking Brotherhood member, the commander of one of the Brotherhoods six companies. My answer was a instant yes, Casdin was a good friend and soldier, and fighting by his side was certainly an honor. After my answer, Casdin and I went to the 3rd Companies section of the barracks , and I met a few of my new friends, and comrades.

"Unless you all would like to clean your quarters, I'd recommend you listen up. We have a new member to our rather large family. I'd like you all to welcome Knight Ryan Bishop. I'll be frank with you all, as you are my soldiers. Ryan is a former member of the Enclave. If anybody has a problem with that, I'd like you to come see me and we will have a little talk about this. Ryan is a good man and an even better soldier, he will be a great addition to the 3rd Company," Casdin said, his powerful voice echoing across the room, "I'll introduce you to a few of my soldiers, the ones I feel you should get to know the best. Meeting the rest will be up to you."
"Yes sir, and I understand the soldiers your introducing me to are the ones your expecting me to be placed in a squad with?" I asked, understanding Casdin's methods. He wanted soldiers to get to know the person they were fighting beside. Good man, I thought. That was one of the biggest shortcomings of the Enclave.
"Ryan, allow me to introduce you to Knight Morgan, Knight Rockfowl, Knight Linden, Knight Sibley, and Knight Morril. Your commander is Paladin McGraw and you will have Scribe Olin with you to assist in all things requiring a little more technical insight," Casdin said, pointing to different individuals. "Be sure to get to know them well, and Ryan, don't pull the sir crap with me. I'm not really a firm believer in military rigidness, you saved my life, and even though I'm your superior, I'm still your friend."
"Thank you Henry," I replied, shaking his hand.

More days passed, and I had gotten to know my new squad quite well. Knight Morgan was our scout, and she was born into the Brotherhood, a direct descendant of a US army infantryman. As was Knight Rockfowl, our main gunner, like Morgan, Rockfowl had a no-nonsense attitude. His most common saying being "My daddy taught me to never waste my time." Knight Linden was our sniper, and was the son of tribals who had been killed in a super mutant attack. Linden was a kind but quiet man, who was surprisingly at peace despite his deadly skill with a sniper. If there was anyone in the squad that I couldn't stand, it was certainly Knight Sibley, the heavy weapons specialist. He was outright rude and nasty, and extremely cold hearted. I didn't know his past, nor did I care too. Knight Morril was the exact opposite. He was the teams medic, and a kind but naive man. He was one of the children the Brotherhood had saved from the Pitt during the Scourge. Their commander, Paladin McGraw was a bright man, and an excellent leader. No one knew his story, just that he was supposedly a wandering traveler who just showed up. I didn't believe that for a second. Something was odd about McGraw, the shine in his eyes maybe. The Scribe, Olin, like myself, was an Enclave deserter. She was very very pretty, but typically pulled the mean girl routine. I didn't go out of my way to talk to her.

Not surprisingly, I did miss the Enclave somewhat, but I understood that this was my new life. And soon my new friends and i would be tested.
