Accents in TES

Post » Mon Nov 29, 2010 6:47 pm

Accents are not the vocal factor that decide whether a person sounds charismatic, weak, inept, confident etc. That's determined by the tone and pacing of the voice, as well as body language. Christopher Walken has an awesome voice, but not all Americans with his accent have that same flair.

Also, I really hope they don't stereotype races as much in future TES games. Orcs all sound dumb, Altmer all sound pretentious, Wood Elves all sound... like the game's comedy factor... Fallout 3 had a lot of character variety in its NPCs though, and i'm sure Bethesda will carry that over. TES games have the potential to be a lot smarter than the average game in cultural terms.

As a US gamer, with limited exposure to European media and only a mild countenance for the dialectical variances of English, I find that the "foreign" sounds of certain European accents help create a uniquely alien environment for my personal gaming experience. There are several mods that I have used for Oblivion that were voiced with eastern European actors and I felt thoroughly whisked away... I do, however, agree with the comment above. Even with an accent, there is more to the illusion than simple aperture manipulation, and moreover there should be greater depth among the races.

all accents should be in TES. all of them. even people of the same race should have variations to their accents. (not all americans sound the same, and not all brits sound the same, so why should all the nords or orcs sound the same)

Let's keep it mixed, like in Oblivion. New world accents like American DO work in 'olde worlde' games like this as it's not really in the olden times, but in a parallel universe, so to speak. I really liked the idea of having one voice for each race. If you can't distinguish one Orc from another, then you, sir, are a racist and I would thank you to keep your racist views to yourself!! :P

I picked "Other", because I don't think that any ONE accent would do the game justice. Each Tamrielic culture should have it's own "accent", although I suppose we can live with the Imperials, Bretons, and Nords having stereotyped "American", "British", and "Scandinavian" accents. I'd like to see several other accents used, such as an "Eastern" accent for the Altmer, or a Middle Eastern one for the Kajiit.

Using more than one voice per race could be a good thing, *IF* they use two or three more-or-less "similar" sounding voices. Having one voice for more than one race was a BAD thing in OB. Having distinctions between the races is a positive thing, and keeping each voice within a general "type" would help maintain that feeling that they're not just "regular people" with Altmer, Orc, Dunmer, or Bosmer masks. The beast races should be taken a step further: understandable, but with a heavy accent of some undefined origin. Maybe the developers could hire voice actors from some obscure 3rd world countries to do the "beast races"?

imperials should be italian (they should also all have mustaches), nords should sound like the swedish chef. redguards should sound like chris tucker, and all the elf races should sound like will ferrell. as for the beast races, obviously the khajit should meow and the argonians should hiss. the orcs should obviously have a scottish accent. then and only then will this series sound authentic to me.

accents should indicate not ethnicity but place of origin. for instance, anyone born in Colovia should speak with more or less the same accent, regardless of whether they are an imperial or a breton. A Dunmer who grew up in Morrowind or a Nord who grew up in Skyrim should have the accent for their country of origin.

Imperials- I like their upper-class American accents. Sort of like Kelsey Grammer. Keep. Also get Kelsey Grammer to do some voice acting.
Bretons- British works, but get some new voices, please. The Oblivion ones sounded awful. I liked Haskill in Shivering Isles, though. If they can get some Cockney accents ala Dragon Age, that would be pretty cool. Irish would also be acceptable, if not awesome. The occasional French voice depending on their region of origin (I suggest Iliac Bay- see below) would also work. Scottish would be interesting for Reachmen characters.
Nords- Need redoing. Get some actual Scandinavian-sounding voices please. Alex Skarsg?rd (ie. Eric from True Blood) would make a pretty awesome Nord character. Hire him. :)
Orcs- They need to sound more bestial. The current voice is okay, but the actors need to sound like they've got tusks sticking out of their mouths. Get the current voice actor to get some braces, and we'll have a winner. :D
Dunmer- Morrowind-style. Nuff said.
Bosmer- As above.
Altmer- Pretty okay as is.
Khajiit and Argonians- The current voices sound like a mix of both Morrowind voices. It's a little odd, but can work with some adjustments. Make the Argonians hiss more, and have the Khajiit purr more, and we'll be onto something.
Redguards- I like the current voice-actors, although some variation would be nice. Redguards from the Iliac Bay should have that African/French sort of accent to reflect the fact that they live in such close proximity to the Bretons (especially the Bretons with French names). Some Australian accents also wouldn't hurt (especially with all that Walkabout talk in Yokudan mythology), but maybe this could depend of social status. I see the current Redguards as being "Imperialised", which is why both races sound American, but perhaps the Aussie Redguards could be for Alik'r nomads and the like.

Of course, a lot of my suggestions are dependant on what province the next game is in, but if they could mix up the voices a little that'd be cool. Important characters in particular need their own voices. Why, for example, does Baurus sound like every other Redguard?

Nah, Jara, the altmer should have posh English accents. Remember, they are (to them) the most superior race, and I felt what they got in MW was the best they got.

You know, I never noticed much of a difference in Altmer voices between Morrowind and Oblivion. Off to Youtube I go! :)

I'd like to see Redguards more than the basic "nice black guy" characters you know from Hollywood. Too long since I've played TESA: Redguard, this opinion of mine is mostly based on the TES4 male readguard voice actor -.-

Bascially, MORE VOICE ACTORS NEEDED.

Since it looks as though voice acting is here to stay, what real world accents do you like/not like to see in Tamriel? I realize the poll options are extremely generalised, but I didn't want to go too far the other way and have loads of options. The main accents used in Oblivion seemed to be English and American.

Personally, I am most fond of the British accents (maybe I'm biased, since I'm from London.) I just consider accents such as American and Australian to be too "New World"-ish and I associate them with the modern world. I don't know if anyone has played "The Witcher," but the accents used in that game are primarily British (including Yorkshire, Welsh, and Scottish) with some continental European as well, and I felt it really worked well.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the matter :)

Sorry if I haven't included any accents you feel I should have done, just let me know and I'll add them to the list.

EDIT: Added an 'other' option.

I have always thought that Galbedir and Berwen should be Russian, Arrile would speak Yiddish, Dratha would speak High German, and all Speechcraft trainers would speak received pronunciation British like Henry Higgins.
Don't be too down on Australian and American accents. (I speak with a noticeable Texas accent.) Definitely good for herders and rural traders.
