Accents used by NPCs?

Post » Fri Mar 14, 2014 7:46 am

Can anyone identify the accents used by the NPCs of different races? I got that the high elves had a british accent. I think I identified a spanish accent for some of the Khajiit, but am not sure, and think they actually had a few different accents used among them.

Khajiit I would say a mix of russian with arab accents. Like, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhistan etc.

Is it actually intentional or just a by-product of the voice actor used?

Well I don't think any of the voice actors in ESO have thick distinguishable accents, they wouldn't cast people with thick distinguishable accents because it's immersion breaking for their playerbase, notice how you never stumble across a British accent or Australian accent? Pretty sure they're all American or Canadian voice actors which isn't too bad of trade off in my opinion but there are some amazing actors with great voice ranges like Steven Blum and John Cleese(yes and I know he's in the game with a very minor role but still enjoyed his minor role) I'd of liked them to cast David Hayter pretty sure he's looking for work and Wes Johnson again he had a profound affect on me voicing Lucien Lachance.

Um - Bandage106...I hear some VERY British accents in the game

Kate Beckinsdale, John Cleese, Alfred Molina, the awesome Malcolm McDowell...and I'm sure quite a few of the non-major roles have British accents also.

They had lots of accents in Skyrim.... Swedish (female Nord), Finnish and Estonian (guards) springs to mind...

Some of it is certainly intentional. Fantasy games in general overuse British accents because Americans regard them as cool, cultured, intelligent, Middle-Earth-esque, and sometimes haughty or evil. The Elder Scroll series is a little different in that it's drawn from a slightly larger range of accents when it's wanted to denote the exotic and foreign.

All of the main voice cast are British; Molag Bal, Queen Ayrenn, Prophet, King Emeric, Abnur Tharn and Cadwell, with the exception of Lyris, who's voice acted by the popular and talented Canadian voice actress; Jennifer Hale.

It's common for some reason to use British actors in medieval games and films, probably because most people associate us with that period. I mean, we still have castles dotted about the country and a monarchy. I guess it's one of the reasons Game of Thrones is so popular. What I don't like is when they use British actors in order to depict medieval characters in places like Persia or Greece; in films like Alexander, 300 and Prince of Persia. I mean, they even made American actor Jake Gyllenhaal put on a pseudo English accent for the film. It's some-what silly; and King Leonidas! The Spartan King from.. Scottland?

Just a funny observation of mine.

Well I can't say anything about those voice actors besides from John Cleese because I use to enjoy his comedy skits and the Holy grail, however as for Kate Beckinsdale I've only seen a few scenes out of the original underworld and Alfred Molina I've not stumbled along yet inside the game.

They've reused at least one of the voice actors from Skyrim, the one who voiced Ralof in the opening sequence. He can be heard fairly early on if you do the Ebonheart Pact questline (on Bleakrock Isle).

Ah yes, Ralof, Farkas and any other shady Nord you come across in Skyrim. Skyrim had some great voice acting, but far too few actual voice actors. It seemed like about 8 people voiced the entire province.

You'd hear Alan Rickman from a mile away. His voice is immediately recognisable. He makes one of the best villains; most people know him from Robin Hood, Die Hard and of course; Harry Potter.

For some reason most of the Nords have German accents in ESO, a decision I'm still completely baffled by. The Altmer and Dunmer speak classic English as it's spoken in England by most upper-middle/upper class people. The Bosmer speak English as it's spoken by most middle/lower class people in England. The Khajiit are going for somekind of Arabic thing. The Redguards sound American. So does the Orcs. Bretons I don't quite remember but I seem to remember they're American as well. Same with some if not all Imperials... The Argonians are in a class of their own.

Bretons are mostly French/English/Canadian. Imperials are mostly British too; with Martin Septim having been voiced by Sean Bean and his father was voiced by Sir Patrick Stewart.

Video games usually do voice recording with british actors, unless they are specifically looking for certain accents or even certain actors.

The argonians have heavy smoker accents. :D

They've used more than one from Skyrim. They also apparently used a lot of the actors who did Dragon Age: Origins. I know I heard Jowan, and quite a few of the elves, even Zevran [he was Malborn in Skyrim as well.]

Haha. For me it's not immersion breaking at all, quite the opposite. There are ten races, people move around, nearly every place we visit is multicultural, I expect to hear different accents. It's much more interesting than everyone from High Rock to Argonia talking in standard American.
