Wait, so if Umbra is outside of the sword, what type of being is he?

A missing star, perhaps. There's no answer, at the moment.

If my memory serves, Umbra came before the sword, which probably explains how it can transcend the sword and opperate through proxies, like the orc and bosmer. If the being Umbra was a construct of the witch who traqed it in the sword (there you go), then it probably couldn't impose its will upon the wielder.

All you need to be a god is worshippers. The Champion of the Arena has the annoying fan who worships him or her.

Or the witch that created the blade itself imprisoned a first soul that was even more tainted than her own to make sure that the sword doesnt completely lose track of its own purpose

Would it make sense for each Umbra to be a previous player? I mean, the Hero of Daggerfall could have found Umbra out of game, Umbra in Morrowind could have been the player from Daggerfall, Umbra from Oblivion could have been the player from Morrowind. Umbra in Infernal City (I haven't read, I can't be too sure) could have been the player from Oblivion.

I understand that the Hero of Daggerfall couldn't have been an Orc, but the race depicted couldn't be 100% accurate, and could be a random race. Just a theory.

Its not a bad theory though. It might be that way. The person that last found Umbra travels to a different area of Tamriel. Just because Tamriel is gigantic doesnt mean that a person wont travel with that blade. I think that theory is possible

A bit of a wild theory. Each hero has a special destiny or may even be divinely altered from conception. Each hero already has there ultimate transformation, eliminating the possibility they could be Umbra.

yep, its possible to become several different flavors of gods in several different ways. the tribunal comes to mind immediately, and the http://www.imperial-library.info/obscure_text/5th_era_loveletter.shtml lists 5 more ways:

really depends on what you consider a god though. i'm not sure i'd call umbra or vuhon gods, though they are certainly very powerful mortals (demigods, ala Umaril perhaps?)

Sorry for being a little late here, but what exactly are all those, except CHIM, I already know about that. And how can you reach Godhood via Numidium?

I'm not too sure about the hero of Daggerfall, but the Nerevarine and the Champion of Cyrodiil didn't neccessarily leave Tamriel.

Nerevarine - Since when where rumours the 100% accurate truth?

CoC - Didn't neccessarily become Sheogorath. Each hero only does the main quest. The Nerevarine wasn't neccessarily the Arch Magister of Telvanni, for example.

I may be wrong, it's just a brain fart I had.

Nevarine leaving for Akavir explains why St Jiub is the one stealing headlines fighting Daedra in Morrowind during the invasion and not the Nevarine. I see what you're saying, but the Shivering Isles is an expansion, not a side quest like joining fanctions. It affects Oblivion and Mundus since it pertains to the sphere of Madness.

Joining the Telvanni doesn't affect what the Morrowind PC eventually becomes i.e. Nevarine, Blodskaal etc. Just the same way joining any fanction has no bearing on the Oblivion PC becoming the Champion of the Cyrodil, Divine Crusader or Sheogorath. A sidequest only colors the PC's background/story, a main quest (Shivering Isles expansion) defines what he becomes.

Well according to that logic, a person that has completed the MQ for the Shivering Isles WOULD become the Madgod? Who knows about that. I still know people that have never played any of Morrowind, or the Shivering Isles. Blasphemy I know. But not everybody will actually want to become the madgod. I know I wouldnt. He's just some crazy clown that needs to be permenantly sedated by horse tranquilizers
