Achievements that are achievements

on faction achievements:
i agree i wantt something that is actually hard or difficult to get, as well as being hard to grow ranks in a faction. it was too easy in oblivion cause you complete a quest or two, you grow a rank. there should be more to growing ranks...

It isn't an achievement when 99.99% of the people who play Skyrim will do that. That 0.01% was someone who bought it and when they started it up they said "WTF? This isn't Call of Duty!" and then returned it to the store. That being said this will almost certainly be an achievement, every game has achievements for completing important things or completing the MQ.

That's really what I mean. Slaying your first dragon is important. And I imagine it will be challenging, making it achievement worthy again.

It still boggles my mind that people care at all about achievements.

In most games I love them, because it gives you something fun to do after the MQ. For example, GoW 2 had an achievment called seriously 2.0. You had to kill something like 100 000 or a million enemies, some crazy number. It gave me a lot more time out of the game.

However games like TES don't really need achievements, cause it's an open world, the world itself makes the game fun to play after the MQ.

Some people hate Steam, because you have to have an internet connection to play it (at least the first time). When I got FO3 on the PC I didn't have an internet connection, and I played it just fine.

Also, GFWL support 360 controllers, right? I would love that.

I hope Steam is an option not a requirement because Steam really needs not only a connection but a fast one to be worth it.
I do believe that Skyrim will be a GFW game (there is a difference) & GFW does require gamepad support

That is narrow-minded thinking.

Because sometimes locations restrict you from having a decent, if any, connection?

Where you live then?

It's not that people care about achivements in the meta-game sense, it's just that it's always nice to document your achievements in a game. But personally I think the online achievements are just a load of BS. I like achievements to be a part of the game itself, not an online service (that naturally requires an Internet Connection). For me, any such online system is an obstacle rather than an improvement - although GWFL itself isn't necessarily a bad thing overall (because it has a number of individual features and services).

Well we already know there will be achievements. Sony and Microsoft now require them I believe. So complaining about how Skyrim shouldn't have them on here is pointless. Them coming up with them doesn't really detract anything. All they need to do is think up the obvious ones (complete each guild, complete MQ, get to level 50, etc.) Then think of fun stuff to fill in the blanks. Most of this stuff is tracked anyways so all they need to do is add a line of code for most things (the scripting function 'AddAchievement' in Oblivion and Fallout was in the CS and GECK) at the end of a specific quest. From there make 10-20 fun ones like "It's over 7000!" - Slay a dragon while on the 7000 steps. Add a few more things into the game to track the fun stuff and you're golden. I'm sure this is the kind of stuff they do when they are done with everything else and are bugtesting.

That's the wrong question to be asking. The right question would be "how well does your individual apartment support an internet connection?". Even in Norway, one of the world's most updated countries with 99,9% coverage, there are still individual homes that cannot get internet without first getting put on a waiting list. Your neighbour across the hall could have full connectability while you got nada.

Also, if you're living in Australia, you're frequently getting your own ass handed out to you - at least afaik from what I've read and heard from australians. Internet isn't just a subscription, it's also the physical network of cables, in-takes and masts in the right places.

achievements are stupid. i dont get why people obsess over them. i dont mind the ones where you have to really go out of your way to get, such as killing 100 trolls or fighting several bad guys with no armor and weapons but when they give you an achievement for completing a quest that is part of the game that is just [censored]. borderlands had tons of those annoying things. after i killed a boss guy i would not only get a quest update but i would also get a popup notifying me that i had killed the bad guy and unlocked some stupid achievement. for crying out loud i was playing the game and saw when he died why the [censored] do i need to notifications telling me what i already know. :banghead:

i always imagine people that have to have achievements acting like special ed from crank yankers when they get an achievement for finishing a quest that is part of the game or getting to a certain level. " YAY!! I GOT AN ACHIEVEMENT! YAY!!" :ahhh:

at least with STEAM the achievement on PC can be easily ignored. i just hope they dont have stupid pop up messages in the middles of the game.......would kind of defeat the purpose of the new non intrusive HUD.

Read my above post. You have to just deal with it because it ain't gonna change. Or talk to Microsoft and Sony.

But what I'm saying is that an achievement should be something above and beyond. Slaying that first dragon, while it may feel special, is something you HAVE to do if you want to get anywhere in the main quest. You might as well have an achievement for each step of the quest chain, then.

This is what I meant in the OP - I would like achievements above and beyond what is obvious - something that recognizes a difficulty in the game which is why i picked one for taking on 3 dragons at once seeing as Todd said that was too hard.

If you are an achievement hater then obviously this thread is not for you - unless you are aiming to boost your post count to get another star :)

For those of us who don't mind getting them but don't want them for worthless reasons please post what sort of achievement seems worthwhile to you.

I wonder how much more in game content they could put in the game if they didnt worry about achievements? Maybe a weapon or two? I'd take them over achievements.

I could think of 100 achievements in an hour, then maybe take another hour writing the scripts for them. I couldn't make a weapon or two in two hours, not to mention placing the weapon, adding dialogue if it is a unique quest reward, etc.

What about disc space, does it take up any? Achievement I mean. I dont care how long it takes to make, just what you can fit in the game.

Personally, I don't care what the achievements are, I just love the sound that plays when you get one.

No, for each achievement isn't just one or maybe two lines of script?

Achievements are small enough in nature, they're just nifty little signs of your accomplishments without having any real use or feature behind them. It's just a simple few extra lines to some code to determine what you need to do to get achievements. After that, achievements become stored in Microsoft's/Sony's/Valve's databases and are attached to your profile. End of that story.

I don't really care what the achievements are, but I'd like you to be able to get all of them in a single playthrough if you do things properly. Mass Effect 1's achievements bothered me to no end because you needed to play through the game over and over again to get so many different possible achievement combinations. I think Oblivion did it well, just achievements for completing specific quests, guild advancement, and doing a few story-related things like closing your first Oblivion gate.

It's 2011. if you can afford games and a PC I don't see why you can't get internet. Steam is the best.

Repeat after me - single player, offline game. Requires online.

As for Achievements.... well, I can't say "I don't care" because I use them to find things to do on Kongregate (web/Flash game site). But I've never really cared about them in anything PC besides repetitive shooters & puzzle games. Open world RPGs? Achievements? Meh.

Achievements have become wildly popular.

OP I agree. Oblivion's list of achievements were a bit to streamlined to only the main story. I'd like to see BGS branch out this time around. The only one I dont think I could stand is the "play as each race." Goodness that would take forever

I like achievements because they give you a sense of, well, achievement. What's more fun, killing and enemy by dragon-shouting him of a cliff, or doing that and getting a cleverly/groan inducing titled achievement for it?

To me, achievements were a great idea. Sometimes I have more fun collecting the achievements for a game, than the game itself.
