Achievements? What do you want?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 1:00 pm

Lets face it the achievements (360) in oblivion were easy. Very easy, with level scaling and the ease it was to get high level gear, it made the achievements pretty bland and boring. Sure the trip to get them was fun, but the ach. themselves were bland.

I don't really go achievement hunting, until I finish the game, or theres a particularly one that sounds fun.

I'd like to see a diversity, than just story related ones.

I'd also like to see one were you need to kill an enemy a certain way (falling of cliff, arrow to the groin, etc)

What do you want to see in achievements.

I'm a PC gamer, so I voted what I would prefer as Steam achievements.
1. Mixed
2. Events, story, objectives.

Not that I care much about achievements. I'd not feel that something was missing if there was no achievements at all.

Best case scenario for me, none. I disagree with set acheivements in games such as TES on principle.
Not that it's going to happen, though.

This. Don't want'em, don't need'em, but it don't matter because they're mandatory these days so I'll just ignore'em.

Silly poll. Where's the "None" option?

Achievements are a waste of space, programming effort, time, money, etc. etc.

What have I "achieved"? Spendt three hours behind the computer in order to get a digital medal? ridiculous.

I play video-games to have fun. I play RPG's to be immersed in my character and the story. What ever do I want achievements for? I hereby vote that I want NO achievements what so ever, and that all RPG's should get rid of them already.

Achievements are nothing but a cheap gimmick so developers can add superficial game play hours to their games.

I see, I have been beaten to it. Where is the None option for acheivements? My son loves them. Then again, I am not 9 years old, and old school. I don't need no stinking achievements :icecream:

Well, whats the problem with them? Its not like you need to do them. You can just ignore them if you want.

But someone has to take the time to plan out what is worth an achievement, as well as how to incorporate them.

For me, it's that the very essence of the TES experience to me is deciding for yourself what is worthy of achievement. Whether that's completing the main quest or constructing an entirely non-quest-related backstory with issue(s) for your character to solve. Whether it's completing a faction quest-chain or creating an all-encompassing alchemical supply store. Etc, etc. The achievement/trophy system sets arbitrary standards on the things that are, to them, worth achieving. And I don't want or need an in-game structure created to force that upon me. Even if I can just ignore them.

Any other questions? Wonder what other small things could be implemented into the game, but get left out, because someone who could be adding them is thinking up tantalizing "achievements" like "Completed the tutorial?"

Meh, achievements can be fun in that they can give you ideas and make you try things you would not have thought of trying. The ones in Oblivion were all related to questlines, so they were no fun. One game that had some fun achievements was Prototype (run over 500 people in a tank? Nice! ).
