I had heard attributes weren't in Skyrim. I decided right there not to buy it (ok, over reaction).
Now I've heard it's just speculation, I'm happy.
There's no real confirmation, but I'm pretty sure they will be gone or in the background because they are getting rid of derived stats. Health, magicka, and stamina are determined by choosing one to boost at level up (nothings really been said about encumberance though). Plus the way they've described the menu system combined with the one screenshot we have of the skills screen doesn't give me hope that attributes will be in.
Honestly I would love attributes if they actually made them seem to have real effects and uses in the game. I would want real, attribute based challenges (e.g. for Strength there could be forcing open locks, swords stuck in stones, lifting/throwing rocks, unarmed sneak attacks, caber toss, arm wrestling, etc). But instead Strength in Oblivion didn't really do anything beyond deriving encumberance/fatigue and affecting melee damage. If they can't find a good way to implement attributes and make them feel really useful then I don't really see the reason to keep them.
