Acronym List

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 6:39 pm

I was just trying to read through some topics and sometimes I'd hit an acronym that I wouldn't know what it meant. I thought it would be a good idea to list all the acronyms that people might use in one place. Heres what I though of and as more come in I'll try to keep the list updated and in alphabetical order.

Acronyms:

360: Xbox 360, video game system made by Microsoft
AOE: Area of Effect, anything that causes damage or effects people within a certain radius is said to have AOE
BO: Black Ops, video game in the COD series
COD: Call of Duty, video game series
FPS: First person shooter, a video game style where you control a character and see through his/her eyes.
KO: Knock Out, usually in fighters where on character causes the other to no longer be able to fight. In Brink you can be KO'd but not dead yet.
PC: Personal Computer, probably what you're on right now
PS3: Playstation 3, video game system made by Sony
SD: Splash Damage, video game company developing Brink
TF2: Team Fortress 2, a FPS with class based warfare

I know this is a small list but I hope others will help

Indeed. There are plenty of them out there. Many of them somewhat useful. Some very useful.
In the case of BRINK, acronyms should be listed as only pertaining to BRINK, its society, and the gameplay/mechanics.

None of these are acronyms, they are abbreviations

The difference? An acronym is a word formed by letters of other words (so you actually say it as a word). An abbreviation is a shortening of a word or phrase (you say the letters or truncated words individually).

Laser is an acronym, FBI is an abbreviation.

Except that generally the "words" considered as acronyms are fairly loose. You don't always end up with "words" as clear cut as LASER or SMART (hey look, a Brink acronym), and often end up with things like OPEC or OSHA which are acronyms, but not really words per se.

What makes laser more of a word than osha or opec? Laser has been around for a long while and it's become really common in normal speech, but it doesn't really differ in any way with opec for example. Someone who has never heard of laser or opec wouldn't think that laser is more proper word.

Who cares? They're letters in the place of words, we all know what he means.

You should add SMART, OHK, as in one hit kill, and OHKO, as in one hit knock out, to your list.

While laser is not in the same comparable scale of SMART, which meant something else prior to it's use as an acronym for something else, it has made the leap to "word" as far as those that "define" the english language seem to be concerned. It is no longer the acronym, but rather the word defined by what it once stood for, with usage in multiple parts of speech also being now included.

OPEC, OSHA, NATO, etc. are all acronyms for particular organizations and have limited use in the English language outside of their status as an acronym. They're still spoken "words", but written as acronyms.

But you can still say "O Pec" and "O Sha" as if they were words. If you want to say FBI, you have to say "F B I".

Yes. Don't deny that in the least, merely adding that "word" by definition includes things on various levels that some may not recognize as such in the first place.

Don't take it to heart. Some people feel the need to correct even when it seems elitist.

Yep. Please understand that some people here were actually trying to help you and not offened you in anyway. And some just have a tendency to correct things and come off brash but they mean well.

I think MAG would be more appropriate for Mag - The game Mag

Oh and OHKO - One hit knock out, or one hit knock down. In Brink terms instead of One hit kill, you get knocked out.
