Acronyms are BAD (Mod makers please read)

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 1:56 pm

If you couldn't find a mod in google by its acronym it's simply because the mod itself didn't get enough attention by the community. Think of it as a way to find only the most popular and perhaps best mods out there. However, adding "oblivion" and "mod" to the query helps a bit.

Again, I direct you to escog. Never used that much but sill in the first page on Google.

The issue with acronyms is that when the only place they are really used is here, they don't come up on Google. If authors called their mod the same name as the acronym, lets say they uploaded it to TESNexus as XYB, it is highly likely it would list highly on Google. OBSE is fine as I can find out quite easily what it is (if I didn't already know). Some things are just obscure though.

Well without sounding horrible, that's your loss. Generally signatures are pretty useful areas for modders to advertise their mods.
Meh. I filter ads out, I never read them, they ended up taking up space, turning them off seemed like a good idea.

Cheezus... And i only thought that people in the Skyrim forum have nothing to do but post stupidness...

There are no stupid questions there are only ... (I am sure you know the rest).

The OP was, at first, badly written and still isn't great. But it is a point. I don't spend as long on these forums as I did but when I come back and wander around (Mainly the Morrowind forums there are times when I stare at an acronym and wonder what it is. In many cases it is only because of the thread that I saw 4 months ago that I can work it out. (For example, there was a modder that made "Antares's Big Mod". I came back and saw a thread [RELz] ABM - Thread 2 or something like that. Not a clue what is was, and I still don't know what the mod does).

In other words, I agree that to some extent there are too many acronyms. It is on the grand scale of things a minor problem though.

Wow. Well, wrinklyninja has summed up nicely what I would have said, and probably in a way that would avoid my getting sanctioned for it, so... yeah.

Voted no to both options for a terribly rude and insulting post. Even after the apparent cleanup.

Meh. If you don't know what an acronym stands for, just ASK. End of issue.

And no one has yet pointed out, that if you're just nice about it, you can get away with a post that would be better asked in a particular thread. I've seen dozens of threads with the basic premise of "I'm new, I need help with a few things" answered in a most helpful fashion. But if you literally post a general complaint to the community about something as unlikely to change as the annoyance factor of acronyms for players new to mod use... Well, this thread is a testament to what happens.

To the OP: You've come to a little part of the internet where, for the most part, people don't behave like they're on the internet. And also the community at large doesn't like it when people come in and act like they are. But if you treat people with human respect, you'll get a lot of help and goodwill here.

Of course we use acronyms, or you think we're gonna type out Francesco's leveled items and creatures warCry Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul Martigen's Monster Mod instead of FCOM in each and every post? Extreme example, but it makes it pretty clear on why acronyms are used a lot. We all had to get used to the acronyms, but this is the first time I see someone make such a big fuzz out of it.

No, it's Alert Someone Knowledgeable. Klever isn't a word. :nono: :grad:

EDIT: That graduate emoticon looks like he's had a lobotomy on this dark background. What use is a degree, if you have no brain?

It'll still get you a job. I know plenty of people who fit that criteria exactly and make some good money.

Hmm, I didn't even realise I'd left that one open to answering. Good news in case I suffer an accident. ;) Have a cookie. :cookie:

@ Corepc: I did indeed. Although I think the flamebait has been averted, since we're veering off-topic now.

Which is only testament to the blindness of employers if they value a piece of paper more than actual knowledgeable people. I know plenty of people who have degrees in fields, but if you ask them something about it that happens in the real world they give you that blank stare because it wasn't covered in the course work.

IMO -- If a user wants to use a mod he\she should read up on what the mod does and take a bit of time to learn what is needed to use it (this also includes reading enough to understand what any acronyms that might be used stand for ---- it is not up to the modder to explain everything to the user - after all mods are made and distributed for free after the modder spends a lot of their time creating it -- so is asking the user to take a small amount of time to learn what the mod is\ does really asking for that much ?

Voted No and NO thanks. I remember when I joined these forums in '06 and it took me all of an hour to figure out where to look to learn...LEARN...what all the acronyms mean. Don't be lazy. Learn or don't use mods. I'm certainly not going to start cluttering all my RELz and WIPz thread titles with multiple explanations for something that is already explained ( you were linked to the glossary on the first page ) Just for you.

You seem to be under the impression that modders mod for you. You are mistaken. Modders mod for fun and share out of generosity.

If you do not like the way a mod is being freely offered to you, then you can kindly and quietly not download it.

Nothing you do in any way entitles you to one iota more than the right to not download.

I couldn't vote, because I'm not a Mod Maker, but if you don't know what an Acronym stands for, Why would you be trying to find it on Google??

By looking at the thread title I can't help myself from thinking that the OP was just implying that acronyms are Bikers Against Diabetes. God, I'm weird.

Oh good heavens. I know I can be foolish and whinging at times, but I hope I don't come across as BAD as this fellow..

Sure, I'm a fellow user, and acronyms can be confusing, but it's very easy to look up what they mean, given someone just gave you a link that explains nearly all the acronyms used here, and you make a comment "Dictionaries are for words, not acronyms," I'm disinclined to agree with you. Even Websters has acronyms.

Wow there are some good laughs in this one.

I have a bad insight and horrible suggestion that is meant totally as a joke:

Since there is a subset of mod authors that work toward better presentation, packaging, and compatibility they are spoiling mod users, who begin to take these qualities for granted. They also are making mod makers who want to create solely for their own pleasure look not so good. They need to be stopped.

It is the only way to curb whining mod users.
